I had never really heard many good prog metal bands before. I heard a dream theater song and holy shit. They are fucking insane. Petrucci is definitely a prime example of a great guitarist. He is not the greatest, but he's still one of the best. Much better than the dragonforce shit you hear these days :D
If I didn't see dream theater or symphony x here I was gonna kick someone in the nuts. Thank god you have both. The rest of the bands are amazing too.
again, meshuggah, opeth, nevermore....where are they? this sounds more like neo-classical bands that just happen to use some odd time signatures here and there, and then are labeled progressive. kick ass solos, but they dont sound progressive all that much.
meshuggah and opeth at technical extreem prog metal, these bands are progressive metal as the title reads. and make no mistake, these are definately prog metal bands, symphony x? dream theater? shadow gallery? how have you never run into these bands before?
X Opus and 'The Epiphany'...classic shred prog on Magna Carta Records

You can hear Rhoads influence on Petrucci in that - it starts out like S.A.T.O.'s solo.

shadow gallery? never heard of them before, but it sounds pretty awesome

@DiabolusEnGuitar
are you serious????
Well, i guess you never heard of them because they han't done any live performance (yet) although they are making albums since 1991.
Go check Tyranny, Legacy and Room V.

What no mention of Angra's Kiko Lourey and raphial bittencourt! Pardon my spelling

speed is king. but doing it "tastefully" makes Petrucci unique IMO. he's not the only one though.
mdo0bm 2 years ago
@mdo0bm And how can he be *unique* and at the same time not be the only one?
Cidr0n 2 years ago
perhaps i meant exceptional. what im saying is that he's fucking rare. there are "shredders" out there that don't have a capacity for melody.
mdo0bm 2 years ago
the solos are unique, not the person

Ah yes, SX and SG.
