@DonTheCritic smoke jumpers do get very well, it depends on how close you live to the airbase you are stationed at as far as being away from family goes, and it is an extremely hard to get some people quit full time hotshot crews to take part time smoke jumper jobs and as far as i know you stay on a smoke jumper crew as long as you can do the job i would suggest looking in to heliattack its similar to smoke jumping but instead of jumping out of planes you repel out of helicopters
They are wearing a full compliment of PPE's, except a few of the sawyers took their packs off to cut. However they had nomex, helmets, saw chaps, gloves & eye protection on.
Ouch, that last bit had to hurt... I was slammed to the ground by retardant and that stuff is still lighter then water. The gel is worse the both... lol
Good Video I was in Northwest Montana last Summer when all the fires were burning. There were hundreds of Smokejumpers Hotshots and Firemen on each fire there base camps where huge it looking like they were fighting a war.

I'm looking at work as a smokejumper, and I have some questions.
1.) Are they paid well?
2.) Do they spend six months at a time away from their families like hotshot crews?
3.) How do I join?
4.) How many seasons does the average SJ stay on?
Thanks to anyone who answeres this!
