I must correct "sisifus100". Jussi probably died of a heartattack in Sweden 1960-09-09 in his summerhouse on Siarö (close to Stockholm). From the mid of the 50´s he was suffering with problems with his heart, many times the pulse raised out of control(up to 200 per minute). Poor Jussi, it must have worried him a lot!
Jussi! Din röst får aldrig någonsin tystna!
@FabDN41 I for example do not share your view on for example Rolandos singing, while i think he is a good tenor, his monochromatic and vertical approach to singing often fail to stir my emotions.

@FabDN41 I have seen your comments on several clips with Jussi and i think you are unlikely to influence anyone by stating your own subjective opinion in such absolute terms as "CORRECT dramatic approach"

@FabDN41 Fuck you dude. This man was a genius at singing, one of the best to ever live. I hate fucking pretentious little fucks like you who criticize greatness because they have no talent of their own, and are too fucking insecure to praise another's amazing performance. Bitches like you say they hate something great just to give the illusion that they're "above" it in some way. Just fucking die!
What is so romantic about this is that her admiring look, is no show. She didn't just love him as a man, she NEVER tired of hearing him, although she listened to her husbands performancesprobably more than any other singer's wife did. From an early age she was passionately in love with opera music, and Jussis singing never failed to touch her. In her memoirs, she frankly admits that his alcoholism deeply troubled her, but the marriage, the children AND his wonderful singing, made her stay on.
Jussi a Natural talent? What does that mean? He was trained daily from the age of three. He sang professionally with his brothers on never ending tours long before the age of seven. His father sang together with Caruso, and spoke at length with him on matters of vocal technique. Jussi himself studied many years at the academy of music in Stockholm. Yes, a lovely voice, but also, he probably had sung more than many professional adults at the age of twenty, and you learn way better when young.
@hereinweymouth rap/hiphop =) in the common opinion its the same ^^ but yes you are right my friend, I stand corrected. But I also wrote hiphop tough ;)
Jussi was, as a post-WWII tenor, almost certainly in a class of his own: this is some claim in view of the competition but so great were his natural talents that one can make that claim with reasonable confidence. Anna-Lisa was not a soprano of equal stature, but she was an excellent internationally respected soprano and there is, of course, added poignance in seeing and listening to this great husband and wife team.
Thank you for putting this on You-Tube. It is a treasure.
In my opinion there is no one better than Jussi Bjorling, and I have been listening for 50 years. You can see the love and tenderness in the way he sings to his wife. I have never once herd the word off used to describe his musical talent. Just enjoy his god given talent.
my favorite soave fanciulla. He is one of the very very small handful of tenors that can sing this role with tenderness, love, and humility. Most tenors sing it like their going off to war.
JB, have always liked his voice and found it among my first 5 favorite tenors, some say his vibrato under forte notes was excessive but that was later and not always. Wunderlich did have a warmer sound but also was more lyric, he died so young, tragic I wish he had lived too middle age, the fact he died at 35 was before his prime, surely the best lyric of the 60's and one of the most beautiful lyric voices of all time but even though Jussi fans compare them I think they where quite different
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This was an awful TV production by what I considered a 2nd rate tenor...never anywheres as good as Wunderlich...nasal-tone was nasty at times..like he was performing an all French repertoire
Oh, a novice...Well Chivalryaintdead...I hope you listen to many tenors and then make up your mind. Bjorling is among the most beloved tenors of all time! His collegues (tenors) thinks he is fantastic!!!
Every time I need to hear a truly great tenor I listen to Jussi. I am told his voice was not large but it still sounds rich and vibrant compared to other singers with loud voices who sound thin and seem to shout.
Simply the most beautifully balanced and focussed tenor voice ever. And a great musician to boot.
i think that is the point of Bel Canto i think it is the vibrato and that carries the voice and that you don't have to have the loudest voice to reach great distances but one witch is well placed and focused. in this Björling is the greatest example. I also think on the other hand from what i heard he could also if i wanted out loud any body even thou it was a quartet.
Fine virtuoso tenors like Bjoerling have all learned to adjust vibrato to the hall in which they are singing. A hall with a 'dry' nonreverberant sound and you need to add vibrato to give colour. On the other hand, a highly resonant hall like a church for example requires a good singer to lessen the vibrato or it will conflict with that of the hall and the whole sound becomes muddy.
Resonance is generated by using the cavities in the neck and head. It is very distinct from vibrato.
unless itunes has it your probably out of luck, but the closest in perfection (in my opinion at least) would be anna netrebko and rolando villazon or try searching for the original as it was just featured in "atonement" good luck!
gansternando apologized for the comment about his dog being a better singer. he apparently does not speak english . he said (in spanish) he did not write the comment
Jussi Björling comes from the same place as where I was born and he is burried at the same cemetary as my grand parents, Stora Tuna cemetary in Dalarna Sweden. My favorite is "Sommarnatt" sung by Mr. Björling. It brings back so many memories from my youth and the bright Midsummer nights...
yes i think he is the best of his time and i think it will take alot of time before we have another like him because simply because in todays world the music is simply shit we need of learning of belcanto in schools it will also teach young people how to speak because all youth speak only in the throat and it sounds terrible
One of our favorites. Was so saddened when he passed. We have seen so many of the greats here at the Seattle Opera, the sixties and seventies. Corelli, Sutherland, Merrill, Gerome Hines,Jon Vickers to name a few. Management just doesn't spend the money on the singers. There are great voices now.
He had a good lower voice also and sang some spinto roles but was really a lyric or lyric spinto as far as voice color he sang in Aida early in Europe and once here in 1958, 3 shows in Chicago but that was the last time and only time in America. He knew what was best and never pushed into heavier rep.
Watch and listen carefully and you will see a great musician listening carefully to his partner throughout and complementing her lesser voice. The last note is her sustain too long and off key rather than Jussi being short
He had a large enough middle register for him to pass as a dramatic tenor and sound dramatic in dramatic roles. However his vocal capabilities would probably classify him as a spinto.
I would like to correct a comment made earlier, Corelli was never a dramatic tenor, a spinto like Tucker and Domingo but Del Monaco was dramatic like Martinelli, Vickers and Melchior, they could sing Otello in the house and did live. Bergonzi and Bjoerling where really lyric or lyric spinto tenors both did some spinto roles especially Bergonzi who managed Chenier and forza in the big houses but Corelli never sang Otello live and neither did Tucker. Spinto Domingo did anyhow, and Heppner
This was march 6, 1950 He was 39, Anna Lisa was slightly older buy only months. This is the Voice of Firestone show where he appeared several times. It is available.
There seems to be two types of tenor fans: those who go in for cleaner voices - Bjoerling, Gigli, Pavarotti, early Bergonzi, and those go in for the gut-busters like Corelli, Del Monaco, McCracken. If you listen to early Caruso, you will find that he falls in the former category with Bjoerling. Enough said.
it's because Bjorling and Pavarotti are lyric tenors, Bergonzi is a spinto, while Corelli and Del Monaco are dramatic tenors. What you doltishly call "cleaner voices" and, erm, "gut-busters", are just different fachs, voices categories, for different opera roles. Enough said.
There is a wonderful full length CD recording of LaBoheme, with Bjoerling, Robert Merrill, Victoria Delosangeles, from the 1950's. It is usually ranked as one of the great opera recordings, so you can probably find at a Borders or Tower. It was conducted by Beecham, I think, if that helps.
oh i've got that! it was that "Great Recordings of the Century" thing. It is rather beautiful, although I hadn't any clue that Robert Merrill was on it. what role did he play?
This one is a high C at the end from 1951, he lets his wife hold it a little longer at the end, smart man. The later you tube with the great Tebaldi and Bjoerling in same duet is a B with Tebaldi going in full power at the end but very nice also.
Onlyg you are stupid, Jussi Björling is one of - if not - the best tenors ever, and yes, better than Del Monaco and Corelli who are way overrated as it seems.
This is the puniest voice I have ever heard from a tenor...his high notes just disappear into nothingness like wisps of air. Sweden has yet to produce any tenor worthy to be discussed in the same breath as Del Monaco or Corelli. Sweden, keep trying!
I was about to say "d'accordo", but then I thought of the very great tenor I was listening to tonight, Set Svanholm, a real "baritenore" and in the same category as Del Monaco but in the Wagnerian repertoire. It is a real shame that he was in an in-between generation for recordings. Trust me, he's up there. Find the early pilots for the Ring with Flagstad. He is the greatest Siegmund of all times!
I cannot agree more!! He has a great technique, but it is the way he sounds that I dislike. I cannot stand his vibrato either. If you want to hear this duet done right, listen to Di Stefano and Callas. Di Stefano was the greatest Rodolfo ever. His high notes are not the best (Callas in Boheme as well) But opera is NOT about just the high notes! Much more than that.
Many years ago I was introduced to the world of opera by Jussi's voice. In over forty years I have heard none better in any range. He is the greatest tenor of the age we have been able to record and I will be very surprised if he is ever bettered.
To paraphrase Luciano Pavarotti, half your listeners love you, and half think you suck. So singers can please the boss at least half the time. Pretty good odds.
Tenors are never a dime a dozen, and perhaps the lirico tenor is the ''most common''. Bjorling's voice, however, was of an exceptionally rare quality. You may not like the voice, but denying its rarity is just a display of ignorance.
I couldn´t agree more about people expressig "eternal truths"...those who have a little real understanding of what it takes are very spendthrift with their criticisms because they know how extremely difficult and demanding the profession is. I do not want to disclose my identity. Perhaps I will read your review someday soon!
I suppose that you are so renowned that your identity must remain private - översättning - och du är väl så berömd att din identitet måste skyddas. Ser fram emot eventuella recensioner.
I wonder who you might be too...The single reason for me to not simply laugh about it is a sincere wish for the proper respect to be maintained for those who brought the legacy onward. These are the days when singers such as Paul Potts have millions of watchers on youtube, while people do not anymore know the name of Björling.
Look sopranos and experts, you take me too seriously. I possess musical ideals that are "out of step with the times" but I am not ignorant. I have not been preaching "eternal truths", just expressing my opinions. I am a professor, though obviously not of musicology, and if I provoked some of my fellow countrymen, sorry!
You know, "svensk sopran", laugh out loud if you want. I respect all those who brought the legacy onwards. I am a professor of history and an expert on the 16th-17th century and Queen Christina from our country. You will find about 50 of my publications if in 8 languages if you google the name Rodén. However, I also know something about music and have made programs for P2 on our very limited classical music program.
To finish my comment, I am not such a "big shot" that I worry about disclosing my identity on youtube. If you listen to P2, you should probably know who I am by now. And moreover, I have seldom seen a more depressing spectacle than this Potts. Compare this with the early career of Kathleen Ferrier (telephone operator), and "do the math". Depressing statement about our times.
Sorry, cant help it, but no fach is ever a dime a dozen. A singer can be, because to take singing to the heights Jussi did, perhaps like noone else, i ssomething absoulutely unique! The fach system is built on the physical and technical limitations of us singers...then there are those who master several fachs, like Caruso, Jussi, Domingo...
If you think I'm juvenile, it's probably too late to do anything about it since I'm well over 50. I think it's also a bit late to teach me "respect". Don't waste your emotional energy on me - apply it to yourself and your students. Good luck!
If you stand up for your comments, why not post them in English, so everybody can read them? I am a professional singer and singing teacher and I know noone in this business who doesnt value great masters such as Flagstad with utmost respect and awe. To call one of the worlds greatest Wagnerian sopranos ever, a secondrate substitute only shows your complete ignorance! And Jussi was not a lyric tenor for heavens sake...a dime a dozen?
I stand for my comments and am happy to post them in English. I personally enjoy listening to heavier voices, a lirico-spinto or dramatic soprano, and especially a voice type that is all too rare, a "bari-tenore" such as Del Monaco or the truly great Set Svanholm. Look, this site is a lot of fun and everyone is entitled to their opinion. Don't get all huffy just because you are a professional musician.
(stackaren.
Kolla in hans Lenskis aria och hans "heliga dåre" i Boris Godunov!
Underbar i Onegin, förresten.
Men - hade hon gjort t.ex. Carmen hade hon nog missbedömt sitt fach... (hon hade smak nog att låta bli.) Måste sluta innan det blir en operaföljetong. Farväl från skånsk lantlolla. Hojotaho!
Underbar! Invandrad? Från Italien? (jag känner mig själv lite italiensk. Passar dåligt in i den svenska "lagom"-atmosfären!)Viva Italia!

Yes, a lovely voice, but also, he probably had sung more than many professional adults at the age of twenty, and you learn way better when young.

It is a treasure.

well Bjoerling is at the top...with Caruso and Gigli, but poor Anna is not in this league..the Bjoerling/Tibaldi version is very fine indeed!

This is superb. I never thought I'd see Bjorling sing, let alone his beautiful wife.
I grew up with Jussi Bjorling's records played through the house.
I'm sorry my dad passed away before this technology became available as Bjorling was his favourite singer.

In my opinion there is no one better than Jussi Bjorling, and I have been listening for 50 years. You can see the love and tenderness in the way he sings to his wife. I have never once herd the word off used to describe his musical talent. Just enjoy his god given talent.

Every time I need to hear a truly great tenor I listen to Jussi. I am told his voice was not large but it still sounds rich and vibrant compared to other singers with loud voices who sound thin and seem to shout.
Simply the most beautifully balanced and focussed tenor voice ever. And a great musician to boot.
donaldrose 2 years ago 3
i think that is the point of Bel Canto i think it is the vibrato and that carries the voice and that you don't have to have the loudest voice to reach great distances but one witch is well placed and focused. in this Björling is the greatest example. I also think on the other hand from what i heard he could also if i wanted out loud any body even thou it was a quartet.
Brachiale 2 years ago
Fine virtuoso tenors like Bjoerling have all learned to adjust vibrato to the hall in which they are singing. A hall with a 'dry' nonreverberant sound and you need to add vibrato to give colour. On the other hand, a highly resonant hall like a church for example requires a good singer to lessen the vibrato or it will conflict with that of the hall and the whole sound becomes muddy.
Resonance is generated by using the cavities in the neck and head. It is very distinct from vibrato.

There are great voices now.
corellintights 3 years ago
He had a good lower voice also and sang some spinto roles but was really a lyric or lyric spinto as far as voice color he sang in Aida early in Europe and once here in 1958, 3 shows in Chicago but that was the last time and only time in America. He knew what was best and never pushed into heavier rep.

Corelli was definetly a dramatic tenor but back to this recording....
tenorfourlife 3 years ago
He had a large enough middle register for him to pass as a dramatic tenor and sound dramatic in dramatic roles. However his vocal capabilities would probably classify him as a spinto.
GermanOperaSinger 3 years ago
I would like to correct a comment made earlier, Corelli was never a dramatic tenor, a spinto like Tucker and Domingo but Del Monaco was dramatic like Martinelli, Vickers and Melchior, they could sing Otello in the house and did live. Bergonzi and Bjoerling where really lyric or lyric spinto tenors both did some spinto roles especially Bergonzi who managed Chenier and forza in the big houses but Corelli never sang Otello live and neither did Tucker. Spinto Domingo did anyhow, and Heppner

Enough said.
zachschro9 4 years ago
it's because Bjorling and Pavarotti are lyric tenors, Bergonzi is a spinto, while Corelli and Del Monaco are dramatic tenors.

This one is a high C at the end from 1951, he lets his wife hold it a little longer at the end, smart man. The later you tube with the great Tebaldi and Bjoerling in same duet is a B with Tebaldi going in full power at the end but very nice also.

VivaRenata 4 years ago
I cannot agree more!! He has a great technique, but it is the way he sounds that I dislike. I cannot stand his vibrato either. If you want to hear this duet done right, listen to Di Stefano and Callas. Di Stefano was the greatest Rodolfo ever. His high notes are not the best (Callas in Boheme as well) But opera is NOT about just the high notes! Much more than that.

Tenors are never a dime a dozen, and perhaps the lirico tenor is the ''most common''. Bjorling's voice, however, was of an exceptionally rare quality. You may not like the voice, but denying its rarity is just a display of ignorance.

I wonder who you might be too...The single reason for me to not simply laugh about it is a sincere wish for the proper respect to be maintained for those who brought the legacy onward.
VivaRenata 4 years ago

SVENSKSOPRAN 4 years ago
I stand for my comments and am happy to post them in English. I personally enjoy listening to heavier voices, a lirico-spinto or dramatic soprano, and especially a voice type that is all too rare, a "bari-tenore" such as Del Monaco or the truly great Set Svanholm. Look, this site is a lot of fun and everyone is entitled to their opinion. Don't get all huffy just because you are a professional musician.
VivaRenata 4 years ago
ellandelachapelle 4 years ago
Bad diction! Det står jag för.
VivaRenata 4 years ago
VivaRenata 4 years ago
ellandelachapelle 4 years ago
VivaRenata 4 years ago
Hahaha! (stackaren. Som gjorde en sån dålig Othello.)
ellandelachapelle 4 years ago
LOL
VivaRenata 4 years ago
ellandelachapelle 4 years ago
VivaRenata 4 years ago
Kolla in hans Lenskis aria och hans "heliga dåre" i Boris Godunov!
ellandelachapelle 4 years ago
Hej igen. Underbar i Onegin, förresten.
VivaRenata 4 years ago
Men - hade hon gjort t.ex. Carmen hade hon nog missbedömt sitt fach... (hon hade smak nog att låta bli.) Måste sluta innan det blir en operaföljetong. Farväl från skånsk lantlolla. Hojotaho!
