  • Bertie Wooster!

  • First heard this song on Lennon Naked. Love it.

  • Top drawer song from Asa - love his work!!

  • This takes me back to Joseph Avenue in the 1940's !!!

  • was THIS the song Bertie Wooster, main character of P.G. Wodehouse's prized Jeeves' novels, had to sing in that contest, right after several other contestants had sung it making him feel awkward as usual?

  • @FumettosaMente Yes it was! Bertie sang it in the episode "Tuppy and the Terrier" in Season One of "Jeeves and Wooster" :)

  • @theadamcartwright YAY!!! Thank you so much for answering, I remeber reading that story as a kid and laughing my head off. Having no idea of how the song went, having read Wodehouse's works in another language, I made up my own tune, but it was NOTHING as tragic as this!!! XD

  • I did not have this experience with my departed father. HOWEVER, I do sing this to my son!! Took me a few practice sessions. I kept tearing up!!

  • Brings it back to me, sitting on my dads knee 43 years ago as he sung this to me, thank you ;-)

  • my dad always sings this to me, he always thought I was going to be a boy. when I was born and happend to be a girl he still sung it to me so now all my friends and family call me sonny boy. real funny to hear the original song.

  • I remember as a kid my dad listening to this on his 78.

  • 21 years of age and absolutely love this. thanks jeeves and wooster :)

  • @davetheshaker You should join us at the Bromley Joson event tomorrow for 3 days,we do lots of Jolson, its been going over 25 years,we would love to see you there :)

  • In 1928 this single sold 12 Million records in 4 weeks. Now it has only 24,000 hits!

  • Their is also a movie called sonny boy, it's dutch.

  • I have a version of this sung by Paul Robeson, which I prefer.

  • Sooooooo,beautiful!

    Thanxs for sharing.

    Jazzy greetings

  • Jacobs Ladder was depressing, this song touches my heart :'o

  • I used to sing this to my dog...Sunny. :-)

  • aye,its a bit corny but,so what? beautiful song.

  • @AndykSuper2

    What's corny about this song?

Today's music is corny...no talent anywhere

  • This kind of music beats by far all the crap my freinds are listening to today...people think all teenagers hate this music...well, i guess im just an outlier, because this song means.....alot to me....love you grandpapa...

  • @Whippodopolous If you like this style of music listen to WKHR 91.5 on line. It out of Cleveland. very good station.

  • My dad used to sing this to me when I was a kid....never knew who Al Jolson was, but I do now.....Sonny Boy!

  • Great song but damn tose lyrics are stupid!

  • @Mullahgrrl Don't you believe in angels? I guess the song by Clapton "Tears in Heaven " is stupid , too>sheesh

  • @jimmiecisco Its not that, its just so inconsistant and I keep getting the feeling that whoever wrote this think he is rhyming.

Although, I proberbly meant something more along the lines of corny than stupid.

  • my lovely grandma used to play this to me when I was just 3 yrs old,. 66 yrs ago, have always loved it

  • I first heard this song in the film 'Jacob's Ladder'. It's so beautiful.

  • The thanks go to both of you: to you for posting this and to Jolson for giving me so many wonderful memories. My dad's cousin was Lou Bring, Jolson's orchestra leader for a time. I grew up listening to Jolson.
