I installed a Western Digital Scorpio Black 750GB 7200RPM laptop drive into my 1005ha netbook and the speed increase is drastic. I can safely say that the i/o bottleneck is removed from the computer in day to day tasks.
I used hddscan to query the hard drive temperature and it only runs a few degrees warmer than the 160GB 5400RPM 1-platter drive that came with the computer. Go with 7200RPM drives or hybrid drive with onboard NAND flash, they don't use much more energy at all.
Bad points, it is soooo slow to load and open documents etc, it is infuriating! some times you just want to pick it up and chuck it across the room! (its been like that from new)
@arohah they sell a version with Win 7 Starter its the 1005HA PU17. or you can get the updated version of this one called the 1005PE. it has a 64 bit processor and longer battery life.

The 1008HA is a bit slimmer, The extra thickness of the 1005HA comes from using an ordinary rotating platter hard drive. The 1008HA uses SSD and can thus be made slimmer. It's a matter of if you need a lot of storage or can cope with less gigabytes and be more slim.
A slight correction: the extra bulk of the 1005HA is due to its six-cell battery, which lends it 10.5 hours of battery life. HA = Hard Drive, Atom Processor. The 1008HA still uses a hard drive, but it doesn't have a six-cell battery, making it slimmer.
Anyway, the 1005HA is, in my opinion, the best netbook yet. Good work, Asus!
u can install Linux by ur self ,use Ubuntu or Xandros, Linux would recognize most of the drivers. there is another version which is EEE PC 1000 that uses linux, but it can not be compared with this one.

no point in buying. Buy the eee 1000HA and upgrade with intel 5300 wi-fi chipset (the built in AzureWave/Atheros chip is shit)
