Because your left foot is off the hi-hat pedal you lose control of closed hi-hat so either a drop clutch is used [a device which you hit quickly and sets your hi-hat at a dropped preset level and then back when you need it to normal] or the drummer will switch to keeping tempo with the ride. Which is really good, considering the cymbals are well worth about 500 british pounds (approx $1000 US).
