  • the musical talent of 'carole king,' the angst of a young alanis morisette, such a pretty pair. a nearly perfect pop tune.

  • Love this, reminds me of better days...

  • Yes I love the singing of Mick, the're so great together

  • Maybe the song is about all of those guys; Beatty, O'Neil; AND Jagger....an amalgamation about her youth. But it is partly or mostly about Jagger. That's why he's singning low harmonies with her on it. Can'y you hear him? British Accent intact. Nobody sounds like Mick; and he's big enough to laugh at himself.

  • Carly Simon,it doesn't matter what 'boys' say.007 is always here for YOU.

Tough as nails and ready Baby!..I love you,Kim

  • Carly , you were a lot older than me ,but you were a great mentor on my problems when i was so young . You are a classic American beauty ,and always will be . You knew i had a puppy love crush on you , still do ,always will . But you were always a lady , and a kind one at that . P.S. Gena Davis does not have as pretty a mouth as you do , and you were the original Trout Pout look that was for real. Davy

  • STARFUCKERS!

  • +++ Always loved Carly Simon, highly talented.

  • Thank you for the amazing voice. She can sing.

  • this song is either about warren beatty or mick jagger

  • My bad it was Warren Beatty.

  • The song was about Ryan O'neal, They had a thing back in the day.

  • I heard this song was about Warren Beatty.

  • qbout one guy called David.

  • Some dude paid 10,000 bucks a couple of years ago to find out who she was talking about in this song.

  • i love her Voice :D

  • Jesus Christ bless Carley Simon, Warren Beatty and Mick

  • Love Mick Jagger doing chorus here!!!

  • I clearly heard her whispering "son of a gun" at the very, very beginning, go check 0:02

  • I want to say as a audio visual tech, Radio and TV Grad, former Film student and home studio musician... (And NY'er) I am only a moderate fan of CS but when I have been thinking about recordings. The highest quality recordings possible... this song has to be the number 1. By virture of the fact it was recorded in the early 70's on analog. It sounds as clean and crisp and full range as the best digital quality I have ever heard! The guy(s) responsible deserve an award. Sheer Genius! Brilliant!

  • @Cldfsn0200 Yeah I remember when it came out, I had no idea who she was but the sound was just rockstar. Assumed she must be some monster star in the US for ages. Beautifully clean and crisp indeed. But seriously, did you really need to give us your cv just to say that??

  • i love this.takes yer back. does it not ? the olden days :)

  • When I hear this song... I have to think of old girl friend... So sweet... I sure did mess that up....

  • Carly Simon hinted in an interview that this was about David Beckham

  • @goodluck123 was die dan al geboren toe ze dit zong?

  • @goodluck123

This song was already written, recorded, released and a number 1 hit on the charts years before David Beckham was even born. So, I think it is safe to say that this song is not about him.

  • This is all about Carey Grant!

  • "You Prob'ly think this song is about you," one of the greatest lines of all time

  • One of the great modern songs!! No doubts.

  • wtf? i clicked on Led Zeppelin and it took me to this?

  • shhhhhhhh...before the song starts she wispers *son of a gun*...hehe...She & Mick was having fun singing...& is for him,at the time he was the only famous & sophisticate to be vain...sorry JT or WB maybe they was just locals,Mick had always been worldeide.

  • WORLWIDE ..lol...

  • libris is retarded beyond her wildest dreams.

  • Carly's song is charming. "You're So Vain" I faverite one so gramer singing!!

  • I know that nobody is sure exactly who this song is about, because there are like SOOOO many possibilities. Uh, Carly, you slut. But I just like the idea that it's about Warren Beatty.

  • LibrisDisseminamus you'r a retarded idiot.

Im positive that this ISIN'T about "santa" so realy shut up befor your stupid coments get you in a bad situation.

  • I'm sure that by retarded, you mean under a different apprehension? Right?

How are you positive that the song is not about Santa Clause?

Your comment almost seemed to be very hate filled. I think you need some Christmas spirit. Maybe if you were to believe hard enough, Elf would appear in your room and give you a big hug. I know it's hard at times, but you simply have to believe. After all, sometimes the most real things are things we can only believe.

  • ok quit being so annoying, no one else believes this is about santa claus. she is not in love with santa! and supposedly this song is about mcjagger anyways, so stop before people really start being mean to you

  • [btw that was a reply to someone]

    and i love this song. :] <3

  • "she was had..." she sang

  • what century are you living in?

  • thats the most retarded comment ever

  • and vain people like to give children presents? ok quit thinking before you get yourself shot one day

  • She wasn't sure that he could get all of the little boys and girls in ONE night, and therefore the effort was in vain. I hope that answers your question

  • yes cuz santa is her former lover and all the other girls wanted that fat old married man too ..wtf is your problem?

  • To the innocence woven tread by thread into the culture of youth, appearance is irrelevant in deciding one's emotions.

  • i allways thought it was about warren beatty whom she dated,,thats what i heard on the radio

  • no i dont even need to

  • who did a remake of this song?

  • Sorry but this is Carly's song, some classics are meant to be left alone.

  • errrrrr nooooooooo

  • u must be on crack

  • hey! leave people who are on crack outa this

  • haha its like in "How to lose a uy in 10 days".

you brobably think this song is about you ben barry dont you dont you"

  • Carly will always be a beautiful woman +singer.

  • OMG i love this song so much

  • i love this song because it reflects my story so well.... in this case it's opposite whereas mine is i'm the one who's so vain.... haha

  • Ahh I love this song.

  • People just don't have the talent to sing like this anymore, I mean come on, listen to Brittany Spears sometimes it's like fingernails being scratched down a chalkboard.

  • That so funny: "you're so vain, you probably think this song is about you". It is about you.

  • No, No, the song is clearly about Santa Clause. Everybody knows it. "Clouds in my coffee" Think on it, the man has to drink something to keep himself awake while he is flying around on Christmas eve vainly delivering presents to all the good boys and girls. They should play it around Christmas time on the radio to get us all in the Christmas spirit.

  • what the eff?

  • really? so santa claus went to sanatoga and his horse naturally won and then went to novascosha to see the total eclipse of the sun did he? and he also wears a hat over his eye and an apricot scarf

  • Yes he went to Saratoga NY, and his "horse" (though it was actually a reindeer with its antlers sawed off) naturally won because it could fly. And he caused a solar eclipse while flying his sleigh over Nova Scotia. (With all the presents for all the kids in the world, the thing isn't tiny by any means.)And who knows what Santa wears on his 364.26 days off?? Who is to say that he could not pull a hat over one eye with an apricot scarf on his days off???

  • ok i just talked to santa claus and he says hes never worn an apricot scarf

  • Could be an inaccuracy on Carly Simon's part, or else Mr. C. has a poor memory. (He has to make a list and check it TWICE to find out who's naughty or nice. Once isn't enough!)

  • and the underworld spy/wife of a close friend bit?

  • Are you trying to tell me that a guy who can land a sleigh on my roof, sneak down my chimney into my house, leave presents, drink an entire glass of milk, and eat both cookies while I'm awake watching the tree but never be seen wouldn't make a good spy??

  • your right madog

    quote

"many vain men I have known in my life."

    she never specified.

  • This song was written about Kurt Barker (search him on Facebook, Sydney, Australia). He used me, the bastard. Send him hate mail.

  • i will definatly send that guy who i do not know hate mail

  • The song was towards Warren Beaty, when they broke up after a long relationship. Fact.

  • It's about me.I dumped her after shagging.

  • Carly Simon has clearly refused to say about whom the song was written. FACT! Check out her interview on Ellen Degenerate.

  • just because you say fact it doesnt make it true

  • no one knows who is this song about. and carly ain't telling.

  • cant people just listen and go aww what a good song rather than sounding like idiots trying to guess poorly who its about and all try to sound like experts

  • I heard this song on the radio this morning and started singing to it. I love it, haha.

  • a woman with incredible brains and sences

  • TRIVIA: The backup vocalist is MICK JAGGER. You'll never hear it the same once you listen to it and realize he's on it. "Don't you? Don't you!"

  • I agree with you.

  • Mark McEwen: How did you get Mick Jagger to sing on You're So Vain?

Carly: I guess it was kind of chance in a way. I was in London, it was 1972 and he happened to call at the studio while I was doing the background vocals with Harry Nilsson. Mick said "Hey, what cha doin'?" and I said "We're doing some backup vocals on a song of mine....why don't you come down and sing with us?"

  • Thanks for giving "the rest of the story". Now, anyone besides Carley Simon REALLY know who she penned the song about (or is she just being coy with the denials?). The match is lit. I'll just wait for the fire to start. I bet it gets smokey, though...

  • ..especially when he says "vain" it's unmistakable

  • refering to Mick Jagger being on this track,

  • I always thought this was a song about James Bond hehe ...'all the girls dreamed they'd be ur partner'...'ur with some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend'... but who really knows ;-D

  • it would be funny if more than one guy in carly's life thought the song were about him

  • "it would be funny if more than one guy in carly's life thought the song were about him"

Actually, I am sure they DO. ;)

But "historically" speaking, there was only one man in her life (that we know of, obviously) who fits the description... perfectly: amazingly handsome, amazingly vain.

And yes, this song IS about him. ;)

  • OT

LadyTakesTheCake: it seems I gave you a thumb-down - by MISTAKE.

    Sorry!

  • There has been WAY too much time spent discussing who this song is "about," and not nearly enough said about Carly's incredible vocals on this song. Her voice is so clear and and full in general, but on this song she also works in a sarcastic edge that easily could have gone "over the top" but instead is right on the mark. "Gave away the things" and "your horse naturally won" are good examples of this.

  • enjoy the song, who cares who it's about...

  • got to agree, stunning vocals from an incredible singer!

  • It's about McJagger!!!

  • Yeah is a no-gooder...lol

  • You mean Mick Jagger?

  • sorry my sister wrote it and she can't spell,

    Yeah that's what i meant

  • If the song IS about him, then how is he vain?

    ---

Haha. I know. It always bugs me too.

  • A lot of people though this song was about warren beatty or James Taylor. It's not!

  • maybe this song isn't just about warren beatty but maybe about alot of the men in her life. Could be? I dont know... LMAOO

  • I always thought she was singing about me cause I'm one handsome sum-b-itch, and I know it.. hahaha ;)

  • clouds in my coffee.. thank you Carly.. with love

  • If the song IS about him, then how is he vain?

  • LOL!! I guess that's the point! =D

  • i dont get it either but i like the song. i guess it is about him, and he probably would think that the song was bout him even if it wasnt. cuz he was cocky and full of himself

  • W-A-R-R-E-N B-E-A-T-T-Y

  • awsome song this is her best.

  • It is "Gavvott". I have seen the lyrics to it. Also My mother is pretty sure it is about Warren Beaty. Could be James Taylor, I never knew he went to the races at Saratoga!

  • Warren Beaty is stylistic so the song could have been created for him. I remember a red carpet event and he was asked what is he wearing and he mentioned the brand names CK and even his underwear! He talks just like it...

  • i looooooooove this song

  • Who do you think is so vain?

  • she wrote this song for Mick Jagger....

  • I also heard it was about Warren Beatty.

  • It's actually "Gavotte" which is an old French dance. Carly herself explains that in some interview on tv.

Anyway still loving that song and all the guessing about whom is actually is about.

Sorry if my English isn't that good, it's simply not my mother tongue, so sorry for that.

  • Yeah its a great song....cheers....

  • so far everyones whos tryed to put meaning to the words has sounded like a muppet

  • apricot/gavote/scarf/naive/

british vocabulary & some french things, even JT went to horse racing he wasnt exactly sophisticate to call someone *NAIVE*-just british says naive(french-NAIF)

lol...is Mick & any of them took it so hard...& made a song togheter !!!

    that's sophisticated !!!

well is KEITH in the guitar?

ow,btw the girls dream to be Mick's partner since ever...maks sense.

  • It was James taylor. She admited it on a VH1 show at one point. And also if you look at the part with Him going to saratoga to the horse races that was where james taylor spent most of his free time betting on the race horses

  • Love this!

  • Heavenly only forbid the song she is singing about him being an ass would leed him to beleive that the song is about him

  • I agree. There are some great songs out there but the lyrics don't make sense. Unfortunately, some musical artists are geniuses with respect to playing instruments and crafting a song but their genius doesn't extend to logic, etc, with regards to lyrics. I've watched interviews with artists and they got me embarrassed as it was obvious the people aren't particularly intellectual. BUT, I do very much respect their artistic craftsmanship!

  • We're doing this song in my play!

  • Its james taylor

  • Maybe it was Groucho Marx?!?!?! The possibilities are endless......

  • OK!!!! "THE MAN", could be Warren, but I really don't care soooo I guess I give up. Why Carly doesn't tell is really the oddity.

Why shroud the song in such mystery?

    Must have filled her wallet.

  • Now I tink it's Mick!

  • I think it's Kris Kristofferson.

  • it was about bush

  • hmmm...gavotte seems is a french peasants dance(like square dance maybe...lol) someone wrote in page 2 or 3,i bet is abt Mick...hehe...nova scotia is in canada,ok.Well, who's playing that guitar? great !!! Keith?

the song is thrillfull,Carly is marvelous & Mick,so charming...

  • classic carly, good sound s of the 70s, i know people, who are vain, thi s song, is pure , torch, and hurt, people who have scorned us, we give you the door

  • totally agree give them the door.

  • classic hit!

    belter in my eyes ;)

    not forgetting mels,

does anyone n if shes in concert carly simon?

id love to hear her sing this live?

    please let me no :)

replys to this please, would be splendid,

    BIG FAN!

  • I Always Sing This Song To My Sister Cuz She Always Takes Pics Of Herself And Shes A Right Poser!

  • who is it? Mick Jagger, Warren Baetty, or James Talyor?

  • i say warren beatty because mick helped her sing it and she was married to james taylor then.

  • I dont think anyone will now who its about apart from her and the person its about - or maybe its about more than one person thats why its clever

  • hes right. She was on the radio in Scotland and said it was about Warren Beatty

  • One eye in the mirror as you watched yourself "gavotte?"(an embarrassing dance or is it "cravat" (something like a tie or neckerchief) or is it "go by it?'

  • Gavotte is a dance.

  • correct a french dance

  • XD I only know because I play violin and one of the pieces I played one time was a gavotte.

  • many many thank's cause i'm wondering what this gavotte could be !!!!

    ciao Omar

  • Actually, it'd be more likely that the mistake would be made the opposite way, that "gavotte", since it's a somewhat obscure word/dance, would be mistaken as "go by it". Also, "all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner" refers to a dance partner as otherwise the lyrics would've been changed to say something like, "they'd be your date". ;)

  • To YooTuberrrr, I believe you are absolutely correct and I stand corrected. I appreciate you taking the time to e-mail me and provide me with that information. Maybe I can return the favor one day. Have a good one. Later AirtoAir1

  • haha I heard this song on ¨How to loose a guy in 10 days¨ and i love it!! haha

  • Warren Beatty himself said "let's be honest that song is about me"...and his former girlfriends said he looked in the mirror all the time and I know that Warren did used to fly all to those places all the time in those different countries like Russia (where he was planning to direct Reds) and also liked horse races. It all fits.

  • good song

  • it reminds me someone who is so vain

  • most people would agree that it is Warren Beaty, which is ironic that he was born in Nova Scotia and in the lyrics it mentions him "flying to Novia Scotia", not a very common country, anyway i find it ironic, it was never really spoken of who the song is about, only one guy knows but he paid i nice chunk for it, they gave out 3 letter a,e, and r, all of the guys it is thought to be have a e and r in their names..

  • nova scotia is a province in canada lol, not a country

  • great.

  • Haha, "You're so Malcolm, you probably think this song is about you" Hehe.

  • I actually was singing this in the car with him the other day haha

  • haha, seriously????

Well, he definitely owns this song....

  • All these years and I never knew that Mick was singing in this...

  • I heard about this Myth on TV Lands Myths & Legends. That's where I first heard this song, and first found out about Carly Simon.

  • This song was written about Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones. You can here Mick singing background vocals of the last 3 chorus'.

  • no about Warren Beatty; it is Mick singing background though

  • Actually, it is generally agreed that the song is about a composite of Warren Beatty, Mick Jagger, and James Taylor - all of which she was involved with. There are descriptions of each in this song referring to events that actually happened.

Of course, Carly will never give a straight answer because then this song would lose part of the mystique which has kept it popular for so many years.

  • Not true. Indeed, Carly never admitted who she wrote about. But many people think it was to Warren Beatty. And he's already said it was about him. It seems thar he called at that time to thank for the song.

  • That'd be pretty vain of him to think it's about him now, wouldn't it?

  • I was actually thinking the same thing! lol. I always thought it was Warren Beaty too, but it's a great song anyway.

  • haha excatly

I always thought it was about Mick Jagger myself

  • this song is with in How to lose a guy in 10 days :D I love that movie<3

  • This is a great song. The first time I heard this song was in the movie "Dick" starring Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams (the movie is about the Watergate-scandale).

  • krydder- likewise; that was an entertaining and original film. This song now makes me think of world leaders! You should check out 'Swing Vote'- its out now, a little bit more serious but also original and entertaining.

  • this song reminds me of rosalie from twilight...:]

  • hi

what does "you watched yourself gavotte" means?

I've found that gavotte was a french dance, but it doesn't seems to be it in this context...

    thanks
