Unfortunately, some musical artists are geniuses with respect to playing instruments and crafting a song but their genius doesn't extend to logic, etc, with regards to lyrics. It's actually "Gavotte" which is an old French dance. Carly herself explains that in some interview on tv.
Anyway still loving that song and all the guessing about whom is actually is about.

It was James taylor. She admited it on a VH1 show at one point. And also if you look at the part with Him going to saratoga to the horse races that was where james taylor spent most of his free time betting on the race horses

I agree. There are some great songs out there but the lyrics don't make sense. Unfortunately, some musical artists are geniuses with respect to playing instruments and crafting a song but their genius doesn't extend to logic, etc, with regards to lyrics. I've watched interviews with artists and they got me embarrassed as it was obvious the people aren't particularly intellectual. BUT, I do very much respect their artistic craftsmanship!

Actually, it'd be more likely that the mistake would be made the opposite way, that "gavotte", since it's a somewhat obscure word/dance, would be mistaken as "go by it". Also, "all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner" refers to a dance partner as otherwise the lyrics would've been changed to say something like, "they'd be your date". ;)

Warren Beatty himself said "let's be honest that song is about me"...and his former girlfriends said he looked in the mirror all the time and I know that Warren did used to fly all to those places all the time in those different countries like Russia (where he was planning to direct Reds) and also liked horse races. It all fits.

most people would agree that it is Warren Beaty, which is ironic that he was born in Nova Scotia and in the lyrics it mentions him "flying to Novia Scotia", not a very common country, anyway i find it ironic, it was never really spoken of who the song is about, only one guy knows but he paid i nice chunk for it, they gave out 3 letter a,e, and r, all of the guys it is thought to be have a e and r in their names..
