I think they really brought out the true nature of the song. As if this was the real song before it got spruced up out of self-conscious need to be accepted by its contemporary pop mainstream. It seems like they settled on a parody of the album using that emotive, and decided to really perform it as seriously as they could, and the result is more realistic than the original. But, the instrumentation hints at a folk root, and that's not there in the lyric. The lyric was pure pop b.s.
