FOR THE US There is a simple solution. Rebate income tax FIRST in an amount EQUAL to RAISING the Federal gas tax then let the individual make his choices. We should SHIFT NOT RAISE taxes!
Imagine $1000 rebate then $1.00/gal extra (we use about 1000 gallons/yr/family).
Trucker or pilot - no problem as we don't touch diesel or jet fuel and there will be more available. Drive a Hummer or delivery pizza to suburban couch potatoes - you are the problem.

if u took the tax off the gas, y would the oil companies not just raise the price 17 cents?
the money would just go to the companies instead of to the government.
