  • WOW!!! Never saw this footage!! Incredible!

  • Made IN Clydebank Sold to UAE UAE sold it to Vanuatu But Come Back to Scotland PLEASE

  • @Lukeyp2260 dubai still owns her they just changed the homeport and have resumed to nothing since then i agree with you but surly southampton would be a more fitting retirement for her as that is her home

  • My only comment is why can't the person who posted this video, get the aspect ratio right when uploading a video onto YouTube.

The original was a 16:9 video, which has been squashed into an aspect ratio of 4:3, making everything look skinny. Please, everyone, when uploading a video onto YouTube, make sure you keep it's original aspect ratio.

That's the only thing I found annoying in an otherwise very enjoyable video of the QE2 on the River Clyde. Makes me proud to be Scotsman

  • @lenvine

Well, yes... I was aware of this but I had certain software and knowledge limitations at the time. I have often thought to redo the entire piece but I don't have too much time on my hands. I notice that you also had some 'oversights' on one of your own recent offerings.

  • @ianamacl

Not to worry, Ian ( I presume that's your first name) I've done it myself at times.

I've also seen wedding videos where everyone looks fat because it was a 4:3 video stretched to 16:9.

By the way, which "oversight" were you referring to ?

  • @ianamacl

    Wonderful video!

You can correct the aspect ratio issue by adding this tag to the tags section above: yt:stretch=16:9.

Only side effect would be your titles being in 16:9 as well.

On YouTube you can find out more about it this type of issues here:

  • Now don't talk about the New Queen Elizabeth like that. each ship has it's own style. the new RMS Queen Elizabeth is just as beautiful as all the Liners who came before her & is already a special Liner.

Queen Elizabeth 2 has the Elegance that is lacking in white hull Cruise Liners. QE2 is very beautiful & is indeed a special ship.

  • saw the new Queen Elizabeth she will never have the same elegance of QE2 she lookslike a block of flats!!!!

  • Wonderful video clip, thank you very much for posting. I was lucky enough to sail on her on her final trans Atlantic crossing.

  • In 1969, everyone thought QE2 was the last of her kind and the future was in Concorde. QE2 lived longer than the Concorde in service and she was replaced by another of her kind. Funny, huh?

  • Such an awesome video.

  • Thank you for posting this, I was at her launch and will never forget it .

  • Bravo! Thank's a million for this magnificent video. I've cried on the first watch. On this day I've learned that the BigU, the SS United States has been saved I remain sad to know that our beloved QE2 is alone and idle at Dubai, far of her native land. I wish that she will be saved and returned to Britain.

  • ;-( bad thing that it won t make any voyages any more

  • Very nice video and the music goes well with it too.

  • Just a short note , We all knew that no liner like this would ever be built on the Clyde ever again. She launched with the nations heart in her. The last true great ocean liner ever built.

  • Brilliant vidoe thanks for sharing, QE 2 is History and she made History, Will she no come back again.

  • amazing video and fascinating! well done and thanks for sharing

  • Return the QE2 to Britain!! get her out of Saudi Arabia!

  • @CanadianMonarchist1 Yeah, you're right. .Bravo! Thank's a million for this magnificent video. I've cried on the first watch. On this day I've learned that the BigU, the SS United States has been saved I remain sad to know that our beloved QE2 is alone and idle at Dubai, far of her native land. I wish that she will be saved and returned to Britain because she deserved this.

  • @CanadianMonarchist1

She is not in Saudi, she is in the UAE- Dubai

  • I have sailed aboard this great ship a total of six times, the first time being in 1986, just before the conversion to diesel. I have followed her history extensively and she will always live on in my heart. This video brings tears to my eyes. Thank you for everyone involved in the production and presentation on YouTube. To Captain Alan C. Bennell, thank you for the wonderful times. You will never be forgotten. Tom O'Halloran

  • Fantastic video, I recently stayed abord a fleet tender in the Ilses of Bute and they are extremely beautifull.

3:33 made me laugh though, all the people running away bottom left :L

  • Of course - the Queen Mary 2 was built in Le Havre in southern France.

As a British Scot - I won't say anything about that.

  • is that the construction of the erskine bridge in the backdrop 06:00

  • is there a video of just the qe2 Launch

  • Watched her getting built from my kitchen window in the tenements on 18 Livingstone St, Seen her born and went to see her in Liverpool for her penultimate and last visit and she was not built in Glasgow she was built in CLYDEBANK!

  • Having seen her and taken a few black & white pics of her four days after she was launched and had the privilege of going on one of her cruises. She will always be my favourite lady. I think we should bring her back from Dubai and make her a national treasure and also as a tribute to the lads on Clydeside who built her

  • I wish she retired in Liverpool

  • makes me proud to be scottish

and one of the songs is flower of scotland

  • 06:28 Graceful

  • Great video of a great ship !

What's the name of the song?

  • Same Ship as She has always been, expect you were not in this world then IDIOT!!!!!!

  • Apparenty you don't know QE2 as that ship in those frames (0:20-):55) is'nt QE2. The forecastle in those images is completely different and resembles QM more than the far more modern QE2. I suggest you review constructions images of QE2 and compare the two.

  • lasuvidaboy is right I'm afraid. The ship in that scan is a 2-superstructured tanker (pre-WW2 to 1950s era) in advanced stage of construction with a squared off forward superstructure and forecastle. That said, we get the point. QE2 was built the proper way not like these mass-produced 'superblock' junks they build now.

  • I agree, 0:20-0:55 isn't QE2, the forecastle doesn't look like that at all

  • Fantastic video. Shame she isn't staying at home forever.

  • Excellent Video...Excellent Ship What A Shame The 5/10/08 Was Her Last Visit:( They Just Don't Built Ships Like Her Anymore:(

  • i wish i was there. i love ships. im gonna be a captain if im lucky enough.

  • She was amazing looking when 1st built. Ships today are'nt designed w/the same amount of care as ships of QE2's generation. Her sleek exterior lines were perfect!

  • You've managed to catch some great footage on this video, and we should be greatful that you managed to keep it safe and now be able to share it with us. This old lady is now coming to the end of her working life and will be sadly missed from the port of Southampton.

    Thank you

  • I have just returned from a cruise on QE2 and saw this is a truly fantastric piece of film which has brought me to tears. My wife seen the ship launched a the same can I get a copy?

  • What a fantastic piece of film. My dad worked on its construction.

  • my dad saw the qe2 being built

  • brilliant song

  • Thank you! Last july I spend a wonderful week sailing on her through the North Sea visiting the Norwegian Fjords. As many other passengers it was our last opportunity to live in the last and best oceanliner afloat.

  • Awesome! I sailed on her in last month. I'm so pleased I grabbed my bit of history while I still could. Great to see some of her early days. Thanks for sharing.

  • Hi Ian,

This is a beautiful video with some amazing moments captured there! Thank you for sharing.

    Chris.

  • The word we look for here is Elegance, she is a beautful ship, the tack flower of Scotland tune is so far out of touch.

  • Why?

  • What a weird comment... Seeing your profile- not much of what you have to say makes sense.

  • It was a compliment on the presentation. Now that you mention it maybe that did not make sense.

  • Though beggier and better ships have replaced her, She is the most beautiful of the cunard liners. RIP Queen Elizabeth 2.

  • Thank you. . .this made me cry. Such a grand lady. Wish I'd sailed on her more often.

  • Does anybody do plastic kit models of QE2 in as-built condition (when I feel it looked best)?

Still the most beautiful liner ever....

  • You can still find the 1/600 scale QE2 model from Airfix at times on Ebay. It is of QE2 as built.

  • Thanks. There is SOMETHING about the design of Concorde and QE2 that they have in common. Very hard to define what the 'it' is exactly. Best of British modernism? I think the South Bank Centre in London has a little of it, and so did the Advanced Passenger Train.

  • Great video - I note in the credits its from the BBC - do you know if I can buy the DVD?

  • Is the film at the begenning of 'Hull 736' being built?

  • Yes, it's hull 736.

  • thats just magic

  • Excelent video,Brings back memories of being a waiter on her back in 1987 when she came out of Bremerhaven with the new style funnel, which made her look even more beutiful

  • many thanks it took me back

  • Very nice tribute. Well done.

  • Great to see - i was at the launch. I especially remember the great wave that flooded the opposite river bank. The Q4 loomed huge over the town for ages. We all got an invite to see round her when she had been fitted out. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

  • Fantastic video! Clydebank is not part of Glasgow though!

  • Yes it is.

  • Despite lying within the Greater Glasgow boundary. Clydebank is actually within West Dunbartonshire.

  • Clyde Built.

    Alba Gu Brath.

    Scottish & Proud.

The new liners have nothing on her.....

  • AGREED.

  • the queen mary 2 is a dive, been on queen mary in c.a and so beautiful just like the queen elizbeth 2 such a galant ship,georgus..

  • Most beautiful liner ever. No doubt about it. Kind of like Concorde is style: very sleek. Love the QE2. (QM2 looks ugly and mis-proportioned)

  • yes, the QM2 is a tub!

  • I love her white thin and long funnel.

  • She is mis-proportioned because Carnival CEO said she needs enough balconies to meet their demands for the guests. She was originally an 80-000 tons liner for 2000 guests. She was built on 3 basic ground rules.

-No taller than the New York Bridge.

-No longer than the turning point of Southampton.

-No wider than the Panama Canal.

  • Thanks for the explanation. I guess under those constraints there was no way to go except 'wider and taller'. Agree that QE2's original funnel was dizzyingly elegant; but wasn't there a problem with exhaust blown down to deck level, to begin with anyway?

  • Not sure. I think there was a wind scope that time.

  • Metal fatigue for QE2.

  • Verrazano Narrows brigde

  • But too much balconies makes th ship dangerously unstable. For every ton added at the upper decks , there must be 2 tons at the bottom. Her sister QE2 solved this problem using aluminum, but aluminum suffers a lot of rust after 30 years and needs frequent repairs. The 'Project Queen Mary' was so intense that the project nearly collapses.

  • And finally, the designers worked out a solution. To fit in enough balconies, they made the ship wider and taller than any before breaking the initial ground rules. During round the world cruises ,she must sail through Cape Horn not able to make the Panama Canal transit.

  • Borrowing some words from Menzies about another Elizabeth: "I did but see her passing by, and yet I'll love her till I die".

  • thanks...so true & appropriate! I just came back to my hometown (Glasgow) after 30 years overseas (20 of that in your great country); I used to go down to Circular Quay and see her come in to Sydney harbour. I often saw her arrive/depart in Hong Kong, New York and Sydney. I am making plans for a big reunion with old friends in NYC next year and must see if I can get a first and last trip on her last Atlantic crossings. Look at the hulk that launched and what a beauty she became!

  • What about Singapore?

I saw in and out of port in Singapore cause I live there.

    :D

  • think she was the more beautiful of the queens built on the clyde,,love my clyde history,,great video thanks......

  • At least the QE2 is not going to the breakers and is going to become a floating hotel in Dubai like the R.M.S Queen Mary In Long Beach, Calfiornia

  • Yes, but I kind of think it's an undignified way for a great ocean liner to end up - the guts ripped out of them (no engines - they get removed. The QM is now just another piece of tat in Ca.

  • No engine is like a human with no heart.

  • Fantastic to see this, many thanks for putting it up on here. I was down at the Titan Crane taking some photos the other day, lovely to see what it looked like in John Brown's heyday.

  • We are from the clyde but are now in Canada - your video is very special to us. Thanks for the memories....

  • Great video but you made a small mistake, the fastest liner is the SS United States, her top speed is 38.8 knots and she still retains the blue ribbon for the westbound crossing.

  • Hi. We have just returned from the 40th anniversary cruise around Britain and it was fantastic and so was you video.

    Cheers. Finbarblue.

  • Thanks finbarblue... and I'm glad you enjoyed your trip!

  • Very very nice video!!!Well done!

  • Thanks! Appreciated!
