The IJN Yamato is a war grave now much like the USS Arizona, HMS Prince of Whales, and of course The Bismark. All great battleships of their day . Two of the four succumbing to their replacement, Aircraft carriers and their airplanes. All should be remembered with respect as war memorials. Tributes to the cost of war in men and machines. Its been over 50 years now since that war and still there is hatred among men. She may have been fast and had large guns but in the end no match for the plane.

prior to Midway, Japan had one of the best trained and most battle hardended navies, naval and land baised air forces in the world. The problem was pilots and ship crews were never rotated out during their tours and pilots and crews were expected to die with their plaines and ships since surrender was seen as the greatest disgrace one could have. By the time of Leyte Japan's veteran air crews and ship crews were either dead or missing, leaving no one to train the replacements
tacticly the US Navy was in advvance and their carriers was spred out wide. Japaneese carriers was in tight group with their escort. so when american pilots spoted japan navy it was all decided.
Leyte was just afthermatch when all has been decided.
US Navy had almost unlimited supies in men, planes and ships when HIJN was loosing veteransamd replacing them with greenhorns.
in 1940 and 1941 Japan was in technological advance, but onely for a year.
The loss the IJN suffered at Midway was NO fault of the IJN pilots, who at that stage in the war, were amongst the best trained. The IJN lost Midway down to many different factors, too many to list here, but NOT the skill of thier pilots. And the comment about the crew of Yamamto and Musashi?? What?? Both ships endured an aerial onslaught that NO warship could have survived. Bismarck was crippled by one torpedo from one 90mph torpedo bomber! POOR!

As I said there are many factors, but I think it mostly went down to bad luck. This is not to detract from the US navys excellent effort and terrible sacrifices by the Torpedo bomber squadrons. @dialgafanclub99 Another massive piece of luck (or fate) is when the US Torpedo bombers attacked, it drew down the covering Zero's to low level. The Torpedo bombers were slaughtered. When the IJN could no longer see enemy aircraft, they continued to arm thier strike aircraft for ground strikes, then the US dive bombers showed up at the perfect time, with the decks crowded with bombs and thier CAP at low level. I must say the US were far better at damage control on thier ships, granted.
1.) The Musashi wasn't adequately covered in terms of air support (seriously, there were more American naval vessels at leyte than there were japanese aircraft !)
2.) The Yamato wasn't even covered from the AIR AT ALL !! how do u expect to take on a carrier battlegroup and an entire fleet of battleships without any air cover ?
3.) The Bismarck was hit by a lucky (i mean, REALLY lucky) torpedo to the rudder. That possibly can't reflect on it's crew.

though it pains many (including me) to see it, Battleships became obsolete from the beginning of WW1, and up to and through WW2 they became more impressive but also more useless. Indeed many navies could've used the immense funds required to build BBs to build more useful assets like carriers, subs and escorts.

The IJN Yamato is a war grave now much like the USS Arizona, HMS Prince of Whales, and of course The Bismark. All great battleships of their day . Two of the four succumbing to their replacement, Aircraft carriers and their airplanes. All should be remembered with respect as war memorials. Tributes to the cost of war in men and machines. Its been over 50 years now since that war and still there is hatred among men. She may have been fast and had large guns but in the end no match for the plane.

prior to Midway, Japan had one of the best trained and most battle hardended navies, naval and land baised air forces in the world. The problem was pilots and ship crews were never rotated out during their tours and pilots and crews were expected to die with their plaines and ships since surrender was seen as the greatest disgrace one could have. By the time of Leyte Japan's veteran air crews and ship crews were either dead or missing, leaving no one to train the replacements

tacticly the US Navy was in advvance and their carriers was spred out wide. Japaneese carriers was in tight group with their escort. so when american pilots spoted japan navy it was all decided.
Leyte was just afthermatch when all has been decided.
US Navy had almost unlimited supies in men, planes and ships when HIJN was loosing veteransamd replacing them with greenhorns.
in 1940 and 1941 Japan was in technological advance, but onely for a year.

The IJN lost Midway down to many different factors, too many to list here, but NOT the skill of thier pilots. And the comment about the crew of Yamamto and Musashi?? What?? Both ships endured an aerial onslaught that NO warship could have survived. Bismarck was crippled by one torpedo from one 90mph torpedo bomber! POOR!

As I said there are many factors, but I think it mostly went down to bad luck. This is not to detract from the US navys excellent effort and terrible sacrifices by the Torpedo bomber squadrons. The Japanese were unlucky to be spotted at a time when thier aircraft were being armed for strikes against Midway. Many of these early battles went down to who saw who first

@dialgafanclub99 Another massive piece of luck (or fate) is when the US Torpedo bombers attacked, it drew down the covering Zero's to low level. The Torpedo bombers were slaughtered. When the IJN could no longer see enemy aircraft, they continued to arm thier strike aircraft for ground strikes, then the US dive bombers showed up at the perfect time, with the decks crowded with bombs and thier CAP at low level. I must say the US were far better at damage control on thier ships, granted.

1.) The Musashi wasn't adequately covered in terms of air support (seriously, there were more American naval vessels at leyte than there were japanese aircraft !)
2.) The Yamato wasn't even covered from the AIR AT ALL !! how do u expect to take on a carrier battlegroup and an entire fleet of battleships without any air cover ?
3.) The Bismarck was hit by a lucky (i mean, REALLY lucky) torpedo to the rudder. That possibly can't reflect on it's crew.

The type IJN officers at the time saw that if they did not send Yamato out they would be considered cowards. Attempts where made to give Yamato and her task force Cover, however these promises were never fulfilled.

though it pains many (including me) to see it, Battleships became obsolete from the beginning of WW1, and up to and through WW2 they became more impressive but also more useless. Indeed many navies could've used the immense funds required to build BBs to build more useful assets like carriers, subs and escorts.

Amazing machine, I have made a 1/350 model of her, but what a tragedy the battleships were, a political tool long after their military usefulness as the dominant weapon in sea warfare had passed. The battle of Jutland was a lesson in battleship vulnerability for any who cared to look. So now the great ships that were used in the way the political leaders who built them thought they should be used are gravesites on the ocean floor.

I viewed an actual video from one of the attacking aircraft against the Yamato and the antiaircraft flack was intense. To survive through that kind of firepower is a miracle. None the less the pilot flew straight into it and followed through with his orders. Definitely not the actions of a coward. Both Japanese and Americans were extraordinarily courageous at sibuyan. How is the 68,000 ton Yamato larger than a 110,000 ton Nimitz class carrier? Actually the Yamato was a waste of time and money and did NOTHING except help Japan LOSE the war. They could have built six to twelve fleet carriers for what it cost them to build the Yamoto, Musashi and Shinano. But in any case all three were sunk without doing much harm to the USA. Cool looking ships though, even if all battleships were just about useless except for shore bombardment in WW2

WW2 in the Pacific was considered to start in either 1937 or 1941, and look at what events happened at that times, is it that when Japan invade China and attacked Pearl Harbor. And WW2 in Europe started in 1939, when Hitler invaded Poland.
