Comments in here below are so funny to read. Whatever who know what really happen in that time. . the stroy of this movie are hard to believe. 300? I think 300 thousand. is real name
2) the Greeks, specifically the Spartans were protected on three sides their only flank was the rear which could not be exposed until later on in the military campaign, which also costed the Greeks the battle at the Hellsgate but it also cost the Perians many soliders and caused sever damage to the Perian ranks.
The fact that the Greeks lasted as long as they did is attributed to a couple of factors. 1)they had home turf advantage, the Hellsgate was so narrow that a large army could not get through.
The reality of things is that 300 spartans and nearly 600 thesprotis stood side by side and were simply overwhelmed by the larger Persian army, no monsters or other garbage like that, just larger army. oh well its just a movie but it was an awsome action packed one.
I dont get the turk dude that wrote the comment below. What does turkey have to do with the battle of Thyrmopolis? Turks had not even become a civilization yet. Your people were nomads in eastern asia. As for the movie it is based on a graphic novel ppl it isnt history.
@okykfk hahahahahahahaha u did what?????? are u some kind of dickhead turk mongol??? greeks won even ur capital... everything were captured by us..... and we lost everything just because our goverment was fool and wanted moree..... if we had stopped there... everything would be ours... and heyyy mate!!! dont call greeks like that... because u cannot know :( u have around 70% chance to be one greek boy mate..... :) kisses
On the other hand think about if Hellinic or Iranian or Russian film makers were making a film about the civil war in US and presented the south part as beasts and the north part as gays...! Imagine general Le as a gay, Lincon as a stuoid ushole and if you felt insulted and provoked being answered like "its only fiction... enjoy it!!!". How would you feel about it?
Honestly I feel its freedom of speech... If they are dumb enough to make something like that then let them. Very few people would watch it. 300 was written from the Spartans perspective therefore the Persians would be monsters. If it was written from the Persians perspective the Spartans would be the barbaric cretins.
Not only I have nothing against freedom of speech but I deeply believe in it. I watched the film and I enjoyed (once more like every other Hollywood film) the staging in which Americans take the Oscar in all over the world the last 20-30 years. But its important for people to distinguish hystory or ancient national mythology from comic or movie fiction stories. If YOU CAN tell the difference I'm satisfied, but what about the others?
Its good to know that in some Eastern or Central Eastern countries hystory, myths, beliefs or whatever, are sensitive case and the others should respect that. At least I, once again, admit that the 300 was most respectfull movie than much others refering to our civilization. But I cant say that Iranians feel the same...!!! And I respect Iranians even if they were our enemies...! Later they became and still are our best friends!
There is a video that gives some explanations about some serious unaccuracies of the movie. Its "Greek Answer to Hollywood nuts(300 the movie)!". Although I dont agree with the conclusion I suggest you to have a look, to have a clue why some people are upset about this. Dont forget that for some people these arguments are nuts and for other (sometimes whole nations) are case sensitive. Enjoy but respect...!
Is there really any Greek who believes that Americans made this movie to flatter Greece???!!! That Americans care about Hellinic history??? That Americans want to push the Hellinic civilization to the world???!!! Dont forget!!! This movie came just in time when there is a need to defame Iranians(Persians) and upgrate the undergrounded spirit of the US Army
You are a tard if you think that... And so is nimani71. Why is it that everyone has to find some kind of conspiracy theory? It is a movie based off of a fucking comic book, or graphic novel, whatever you want to call it. My God, if they remade Peter Pan you would find someway that it is anti-Iraq/Iran too... This movie is meant to be fun. Not to be some history channel special... *rolls eyes at the idiots*
Dont ask me about conspiracy theories. Ask CIA...! Thats what excactly I said below. US took (stole, once again!!!) parts of the Hellinic history and turned it in comics and stupid propaganda films. I guess most of the Americans learn history from comics...
Wow... You are one sad, misguided little man... I'm sorry for you. I'm sorry that you can not just enjoy something that is meant to be enjoyed as ENTERTAINMENT. The CIA did not write the comic. The comic is a work of FICTION. That work of FICTION is LOOSELY BASED on REAL EVENTS. It is a STORY not a documentary written by the same guy who wrote Sin City... Is Sin City a CIA/Anti-Iraq piece of propaganda too?
R U absolutely sure? I mean, R U sure that this comic, film or whatever is almost fiction as you say? I guess you've seen the film and read the comic but do you now the REAL STORY??? Do you know anything about, the 2500 years ago, Hellinic or Persian history??? Can you tell the differences between those events and any modern comic or movie???
I must admit that this movie is much more accurate than other stupid unaccurate movies Hollywood made (which are based in fiction in a major part as you may say) like "Alexander the Great" which refers to the great Hellinic king of Macedonia or "Troy" which is a bad copy of Homer's Iliad. I'm not sure U know what I'm talking about but be sure Hollywood does know...
I know what history books, and religious writings have to say about it. Neither of us was were really there so all either of us can do is speculate; using the facts we have available. All I'm trying to say is that the film 300 was meant primarily as history based FICTIONAL entertainment.
The comic was written to be bad ass and the film was made from that source material with a few (non-plot) minor changes. All it was, was another testosterone fueled ass-kickery movie. It was fun to watch.
More amd more the Americans are trying to persuade the world that what ever they do is right, that they are the saviours of the planet (who is going to save them I dont know...!:)) and they use any possible way to do that. Hollywood is the most succesful brain-changing and opinion-making machine! They take history, they change it a bit and they give a new story (American friendly version!) and then they say: "Oh, come on, this is not history. Its just a movie..."
Yes, this is a movie based on an American comic and the perpose is to defame Iranians and show them in the world as less human people. But the story and the characters are based on the most glorius momments of the Greek history. I'm proud for my history not proud or flattered from an anaccurete propaganda film...
Will you please shut the fuck up..its a great movie and if it said "Based on a true story"Then there make it a true story morons just watch the fuking movie.
Who gives a shit about the persians or the greeks its a fucking movie for Christ sake get the hell over it! And who cares about if it actually happend in history yet again I say ITS A FUCKING MOVIE!!!
Even today when someone is not saying much(but he means a lot) we say that he "LACONIZY" (talking like a LAKEDEMON). An also famous expration is "TO LAKONIZYN ESTI PHILOSOPHIN" which means in free traslation "Not talking much is Philosophy"
Ok, ya in the movie he is a lot less ruthless. They actually portray as a intellegent man. The action seens are still sweet. and the persian could have been black becuase the persian empire spread across parts of africa. O ya iu give the movie A++
You are absolutely right. Persians were not black nor savage monsters. They were a great civilization and a great well trained army of 1 million warriors! And Leonidas wasnt a violent leader but a determinated to his duty King. There are many lies and misleading in every Hollywood film...

>>good movie! but fucking fake. as long as i know persian are not black
LOL Good point! Actually there is nothing factful in this movie. It is just a feel good kinda fiction. The name of this movie could be 300 Icelanders in Madagascar or Lice in Wonderland... :-)
Turkish court in Instabul(Constandinople)has ordered the Turkish Communication Co. to forbit Turkish poeple to enter in utube because of videos which defame Attaturk and Turkey. I protest against this censorship. The Turkish people who has the right to access every kind of communication and information freely in the net and express their opinion without govermental interferences.
No, it was the violation and saqcrilege of one of the most sacred places in Hellas, the monument of the unknown Hellenic soldier, by anarchists and demonstrators of the Left parties.
Dude, what are you talking about? I was saying this is going to be a good movie and people shouldn't be arguing about historical accuracy. I WANT to see this movie!
Why eliminate a source where you can get money from? Why kill people who can be integrated and work for you? As I wrote the Ottoman Empire was multi ethic like Byzantine before was also and all the nationalities and reliogious denominations ( muslims christians and jews) were not completely isolated from each other but they cooperated, worked and lived together.
I forgot that there was for a few months an overtaxation for non-muslims in 41 or 42 because of the second world war. Yes this was shameful along with the excesses in the fiftees in Istanbul.
With farsightedness I meant that the Ottomans made decisions deliberate and it was not always a matter of life and death.
You are right when you mourn that the "Rum" were overtaxed and in front of a court it was not always easy for them but remember this was not just because their were Greeks but because their were Christians in the Empire and we didn´t had a secularized jurisdication until 1839 I think but nevertheless vestiges of the old one co-existed with the new until Ataturk.
The term "Rum" was used for the Greeks in the Ottoman Empire and you are rightl. It is derived from "Rome". Today we say "Rum" to the Greeks on Cyprus as wel as to the Greeks in Turkey and "Yunan" (ionia) to the Greeks in Greece.
Ataturk was a great commander, a bright statesman with strong ideas and he had charisma which appealed to a lot of people. The Republic was not founded overnight but out of an long process which actually has his roots even in the Tanzimat period in the first half of the 19th cenury. When Ataturk proclaimed the Republic in 1923 he had the greatest influence on the state with a big following and indeed he was somehow autocratic but found himself faced with many anti-Republican opponents.
What I,very often, see in utubers' Turks is that u stick in past. Huns, Ottomans, war victories 2 centuries or even 1 century ago. Noone is thinking about Turkey today or in the very short future. I hear some Turks implying that Ottomans will return! Trying to originate your roots, your excistance in the world is one thing. Finding your relationships and originations in the new terms of the 21st century and the "universalization" is an other...
Hear ye! A Greek is claiming that the Turks here are sticking too much in the past. But what is about you? My impression is that you are actually those who stick too much in the past. I often see Turks writing things like "increase the peace" but i see very few Greeks doing that.
You are not wrong in that. Bringing up the good times of your civilization is one thing but bringing up hating, seperation and misleading is another. We have, both sides, a lot of those 2 things... What do you think more reasonable and possible in future? Bringing Ottomans and Byzantines back or proceeding Hellas and Turkey in a powerfull future?
Hey zicco.I think you are an intelligent and friendly guy.I live in germany and i have a lot of turkish friends here.I wanna say one thing:I wish peace and friendship will come one day into our two states. We must look forward for a better future. Both of us Turkey and Greece must forget the bad times in our histories...
I think rather than just to forget the past we should be able to talk about openly and with no tension like the French and Germans do. How many times did these two nations fight against each other? Very often. But look at them now. They get along with each other in such a way as if their historical enmity never existed. And they are today together the two major members of the EU.
This is exatly the thing about i´m talking.Look at german and france now. They have the strongest role in europe.Turkey and greece can be the strongest nations in the balkans and in the middle east if they come together!!!
Man you think the same way that i´m thinking.I´m always bringing up the German-France example to show someone that two great enemies can fix the problems and became two strong allies.
Just remember: the Ottoman Empire was not a nation state but a multi-ethnic state and in this state the
Greeks, or we say "Rum", were a major minority. Nimani brought an important aspect up somewhere as he wrote
that some regions which were almost autonomous aside from being loyal to the Padisah and to pay taxes. Therefore the main aim was not just to enter a battle blindly but diplomacy and farsightedness played also a role.
I agree with you but I would like you to explain what farsightedness means because I didnt find it in my dictionaries and what do you mean "Rum". If you mean Romans thats not correct. Although common roots Romans and Hellins are different people.
Few seconds later something came up in my mind. By "Rum" I think you mean that what we say "Romios". If this is true then I, sure, tell you that this has nothing to do with Hellins. I dont want to enter in a big discussion, as non importand at this point, about the geneology of Hellin and Greek(Graikos)and how this became synonimus to Romios so I remain in these.
But how many states in this world at this time had and when you are honest you can`t say that Greeks lived worse than Turks but now I want justify such treatments neither though. Of course not.
The difference is very obvious for anthropologists, archaiologists and historicians to pay attention but its very convinient for politicians who want to take advantage of their peolpe and voters to use it today. Dont forget that noone knew, not even the Yugoslaves, about (fake) "Macedonia" until the 80's!
As it concerns Macedonia culture ...you are right in some way!!! Macedonia was not the only culture with its own origin. There was also the Cycladic Civilization (prehistoric in Cyclides, middle Aegeo Sea), the Minoan Civilization (Crete), Mykinaic Civilization (Peloponissos, S. Greece). Even Athens, Sparte, Korinthos, Efessos, Militos, and many other cities had their own different origin from each other.
I bring to you these words by the book I'm reading recently with the title "KEMALISM - The birth and development of the official ideology of modern Turkey" by Niyazi Kizilyurek, a Turk-Cypriot who was rewarded with the Ampti Ipectsi Price among others! As you can see I dont pay attension to the wikipedia and I'll never will...!
Do you take the surname Ataturk literally??? This name was given to him by the parliament and you have to see it in the figurative sense as he was the first president of the Republic and an ideological leader. And it is a popular fallacy that the Turkish Republic was founded particularly by Mustafa Kemal. The founding of the Republic was initiated by the Young Turks from which later the Comitee of Union and Progress(the Republicans)was formed and later Mustafa Kemal participated in it.
About "Turks"... Oh please zicco I know you are a reasonable man! Kemal is named "Attaturk". That means "the Father of Turks" unless you disagree... So I dont know anyone who excisted before his father. I believe you understant that we talk about Turkish Nation as a new ordered, democeratic origination that came as a reform of the Ottomans and the islamists.
Hystoricaly speaking the best warriors in the world where Spartans, Atheneans (the best navy), Toltecs, Samurai, Ninja, Vickings, Kozacs, Hitlers' Es Es, Vietcongs and today Mutjahedins. The reason for this is that all these armies have fought upnumbered enemies in battles used higher strategy and won. All the battles that have remained in world history were based on this fact. Greek warriors have remained many times in ancient and modern world history as great warriors...!
And one more thing... The Huns were not Turks!!! The Huns were mongols. Turks are a nation that was created by Kemal Attaturk willing to reform and the Ottomans and the Islamists in the 19th and 20th century. Even Ottomans were not Huns although they had mongol roots but they were very different from the Huns.
Nimani actually I didn`t want to argue with you again but you are bullshitting and confusing again. First of all the Huns were of course not an uniform ethnicity but in large part they were consisting of Turkic tribes and along with Mongolians later which were included because of cutting land there.
Don't mistake them with the Great Mongolian Empire where in turn the Mongolians incorporated Turkish tribes who played also an important role by gaining new land. "Turks are a nation that was created by Kemal Ataturk" What is this nonsense again?! Aren't you tired by affront?
How do you like it when I say that the culture in Macedonia has is own origin besides the Greek one? It has doesn't it? I don`t know if you are intending it or just wrongly informed but I don't think that the Greek wikipedia would be a good source for that matter and I suggest valid literature if you intend to get informed about us.
zicco it is nice to see you again!!! I'm sorry I didnt answered to your e-mail yet. I'll be glad to very soon!!! :) As it concerns the "bullshiting" about the Huns it looks like that you dont disagree excactly with me. You say... "First of all the Huns were of course not an uniform ethnicity but in large part they were consisting of Turkic tribes and along with Mongolians later which were included because of cutting land there."
It was not 7000 Greeks my friend. It was the 300 Spartians and 700 Thespians. And it was not against 150-200.000 Persians but 1.500.000 (ONE MILLION AND A HALF!!!) Persians. At least according to Hyrodotus.

Hollywood films are not made to teach history and most of the times are not historical accurate. Films are made for entertainment. We dont need Hollywood to learn history. We will watch the film for entertaining. May be you'll find it entertaining, too...!
The point is that they teached to the rest Greek cities courage and determination to win or die.(You can see that in our days with moutzahentins. Although American troops are much more sized and advanced they are loosing because of the heavy losses.)
As it concers about the battle of Marathon, there were not only 300 Spartans but also few Thibians (another city in Attica) and others but the main power were the Spartans) after the retreating of the rest Hellenic cities army because of the fear of Persians. But Spartans were unfearable warriors trained from the age of 6 years old.
Regarding to Cyprus or this so called genocide I think it doesn`t make sense to start a debate about them here now since your point of view is by far different. You say Eoka is a military organization and for me they are a terrorist organization and I know that you know that I have a different perspective on Cyprus as a well as on the Armenians.
Why don´t you start to look on the Turkish conquests in the past less elevated? I can somehow understand you but we also paid a heavy price and a blood shed often enough. To revel too much in the past doesn´t get you the solution for today´s problems.
Your geografical position and ethnological situation gives many challenges to your state to improove. This improvement will not come with genocides (dont tell me there were not!) and casus beli. Its up to you how you'll do it, it's up to common sense that peace and corparation is a necessity!
It is a fact that Turks incorporated new land, lost it again (like you did before, as so many nations on the whole wide world did) until the crucial wars in the 20th century where the outline of todays`map got gradually manifest. You cannot really blame us just for the conquests since we were not the only ones
who made the decision to do that. I can`t hardly be dissappointed about my entire history as you cannot about yours, right?
Greece itself was not treating minorities in the changing years the same democtaic and human way but are trying to blame others for misdoings. Greeks and Turks fought in their history in countless battles but besides that there were also countless alliances, more involuntarily than voluntarily so the ties are firm somehow.
Pal, you are writing too much bout unimportant details. I am writing about your ties to Serbian killers, you are writing about oil and gas. I write about minorities in Greece you write about which place belongs to Greece. I am writing about the situation in modern times and today ,you seem to drift to your ancient and Byzantine feelings.
One thing else to the Ayasofya: elhamdulillah, I`m a Muslim and as a Muslim I would rather see this blessed place back as a mosque than a museum. But I also understand that this former church is a sacred place for the Orhodox, too and that you would rather have it a museum than a mosque. You should regard the transformation to a museum as a advance and forget these lunatic beliefs someone wants to destroy it. Hell,no.

But of course that doesn´t means that there were not dark chapters regarding democracy and human rights throughout the history at all. I hope you understand me better now.
Back in the days it was far away of being a perfect democracy and although we had periodically times with less and times with more democracy we still have deficites till this day. But I think the actual important thing is that the huge reforms of the form of government and in the entire society including new laws by the "dictators" you call were essential to initiate first the way to a democracy, regardless it has deficites or not.
Views in Europe where the Muslim society was awesome admired were long forgotten and reforms were not just due, but overdue and our Republican movement within the last chapters of the Empire and of course in the war eventually led to the founding of the Republic.
I totally agree with you in one point: you cannot compare Turkey with Greece on the same basis. With Muslim traditions, a larger complexity of social structures, a difficult historical process and some declining elements Turkey alltogether Turkey had especially in the recent chapters of modern times with the ideal of a solid nation state tons of more challenges than Greece and you should bear that in mind.
Do I get you right, you make your picture of modern Turkey out of descriptions of the Greek migrators?? Well then my advise to you is that you should seriously change the approach to your point of view. What a picture of Greece and other states would I have when I would stuck on the stories of Turkish refugees from the Balkans? I guess it wouldn´t be an unbalanced view.
As it concerns about the Serbians things are very complicated. The whole fact was not about Kroatians, Montenegros and Serbians. Was about controling the way of gas and oil whitch will pass through Balkan. And you or we have a bigger oil co than TEXACO and BP then you know who really is interested to create trouble in Balkans...
EOKA was a military organization of Cyprus during the time of British occupation. I dont understand what you mean about EOKA but who ever fight to free his country is a patriot. Dont you think so?
Please, be more careful in the future and get better information. You seem to be a well educated person and not the average Turk. Use it wisely, not fanaticaly and cross your information.
Please define me what you mean by Macedonian and Epirus because these are Greek territories like Peloponisos, Thesalia, Thrace, Creta, Cyclides and Dodokanisa, etc. And If someone Greece,as I know, takes a name he dont like he may change it to what ever he likes and when ever he likes!
All this picture about modern Turkey that I, the rest Greeks and the rest world have, comes from the people who came as refugess from Turkey not only in Greece but in Europe too, and from the Greek Press whitch in turn takes it from, where else, the CNN TURK AND HURRIET. So, if the picture we have is of the '80s thats because that's what you give to us. You have to improve your picture of your country. I'm glad to see that some wise people have already started. Are you one of them?
Thats something, also, we cannot be compared to because many times you have created troubles in Greeks that comes to Turkey OR Turkey ORTHODOX who are trying to make ceremonies. Will you protect them and give them their rights as Greeks are?
Muslim in Greece, as Catholics, as atheists, as Polytheists (Who believes in the 12 and more ancient Gods), and ever othen minority SHOULD have the same rights as the Orthodox Christians. But they dont officialy! They do typicaly! Greek goverment in on the way to permit Muslims to built a temple in Athens. Gray wolfs, your fanatics, and your goverment are on the way to burn and demolish Ag. Sofia among others. Orthodox most holy temple.
First of all you cannot connect my country with yours. Nobody never drove us to international Courts about tortures EXCEPT during dictatorship whitch was an abnormal situation changed by the Greek people with almost armed revolution. Will you do that too? Do you dare? If you do then you can be compared to us!!!
Ok, the last comment was jest. You are familiar with Greek things more than a usual Turk internet serfer. Thats very, very suspicius but I'll take my chance because I have nothing to fear. What I ment before about mixing truth and inaccurancies still remains. It would take me many pages to answer so I'll try do it as shortly as I can.
And I don´t like the way how you are triying to sound philantrophical, bla bla bla. Let me remind you that Greeks sympathised with the Serbian butchers in Bosnia and their affecting pseudo feelings for human rights even didn´t hindered Greek officals to meet with them and even the current president of Cyprus is a former member of the Eoka!
Weren´t the Slavs in Macedonia and Albanians in Epirus forced to get Greek names? Why are the Muslims the only recognized minority in Greece since there are more? What about the discrimination of the Turks in Eastern Thrace?
One of the primary premises for a modern democracy, along with a body of laws, is to elect a governance by the people. This is given in modern Turkey earlier than in modern Greece (please don`t come with your ancient history now.) You shouldn`t blame us too much for torture since the torture was the norm in Greek prisons not a long time ago.
Last but not least it plays an important role because of our tremendous challenges. Challenges which Greece can not even imagine. I doubt that you are familiar with what goes on in Turkey today and I strongly suggest that your picture of our policy is from 1980 so get yourself updated. And I bet you got the number of 50% from your gutter paper Ta Nea since it is just bullshit like almost all of the Greek media.
It is simply not true when you say that the prime minister cannot make important dicisions without asking the generals, he can of course do that very well. But you must see that military plays a more important role in Turkish policy because its part at the constitution of the Republic and its historical process out of the Ottoman Empire and all its problems which why the laicism plays such an important role.
Calm down and don`t switch the context. I never said that the human rights were never offended and some laws are in fact absurd and when I write about Kemalists I don`t mean the military exclusively. You can find of course countless people who regard themselves as true Kemalists in different parties and organizations who criticise some views in the military over and over.
In a country where there are not human rights according to National Amnesty and other humanaterian organizations and has been condemned many times from the Internationals Courts. In a country where trere is censorship. In a country where prizoners are being tortured with coarseness and brutality. In a country where a prime minister cannot make dicisions and take actions without asking the militarist is a FASCIST country under dictatorship. Even if the prime minister is elected.
zicco26 take the bullshit out of your mind and put this. In a country where there is no poltical freedom and politicians and other people got to jail just because they say their opinion. In country where 50% of national total income goes to military equipment and weapons whitch are used not for defense in times of war but for keeping internal voices down.
And something else : why are you trying to defame Kemalists as dictators? I think it is because you would rather like to see Turkey in the same category like Syria, former Iraq and Iran. Maybe you dream about it I don`t know what goes on in your brains. Or you are such hillbillys that you really don`t know anything about Turkey. We had in our "dictatorship" a multiple party system already when Greece was ruled by the junta. But of course we had huge trouble ,too.
Please call us just one scientist and archaeloge who agrees with Herodot´s fairy tails. Of course it is acknowledged that fewer Greeks defeated the Persians but it is also acknowledged that the numeral difference was by far not that much as you maybe try to suggest.
7000 greeks(300 spartans,700 thespians,6000from athens and other parts off greece)against 150.000-200.000 persians.Thats are the facts that the most scientist today are believing...
How many times had Mohameth to besiege Konstantinoupolis and why, not only, didnt succeed but he faced disaster of his army and navy? You may call us stupid but I know one thing. You know nothing about our civilization. Solve, first, your "economical troubles", kick off your kemalist military dictators in order to join the democratic and human rights respectable EU. For your childrens sake... If you are wise enough!!! get it zicco and the rest of you?
I dont understand why you intend to make criticism about Greek history and civilazation like you are experts... although you dont have a clue! It's not us that told the story of Leonidas. Its scientists, archaiologists from, almost, all over the world!!! But you are right in one thing. There were traitors too. Thats how you took Konstantinoupolis and north Cyprus later on. It was not your "brave" soldiers.
like i wrote before the spartians were outnumbered by a few thousands. the trick was that leonidas took the fight in a narrow spot so they could not be surrounded.
very good strategy as simple as that.
ofcourse the movie will be sensationalised we're talking about hollywood after all!!
once you have net access why don't you do some research.
Ok, let`s assume there were about threehundred bodyguards against an army about one million. That means proportional that every single man on the Spartanian side would have beaten over 3300 Persian side. In fact this is a cock and bull story but of course a good story for a Hollywood film.
You must know that the spartans didn´t win the battle. But they have stand there for 3 days and gave the rest of greece time too organisize the defend of her land...
if i didn't think that it goes for me first i wouldn't say it. that is what i try to do for my three lovely girls.give them a better life than mine, only it would be ruther to spent for schools than guns that goes both ways, greece and turky.
my name is costas and i am from crete.
there were not millions but a few thousants, what leonidas did was to bring the fight in a narrow area so they couldn't go round them, good moove.
hope you did not call me stupid at your last comment.
You are soo stupid that you really think that these legend of beating millions by a few hundred REALLY took place. Someone should tell you mofo`s that when Herodot made his descriptions he tried to emphasise the pathos of the event instead of giving an objective reproduction. "Yeeaah and when they fight Zeus came and blast all the Persians with thunderbolts from his ass." Muhahahaha! Probably you believe in the Easter Bunny, too.
Wise words bolotsos! You are right, one of the primary goals of every nation should be to enable a better life for their children, the same goes for you. Do you maybe think we don`t try to do that? And when there are crack hoes, inside and outside ,who want to diminish Turkey`s sovereignty and stability then we have to react adequate that`s it.
i would like some exampls about your democracy. i don't mean it in a bad way but don't you think that it's time to wake up? fight for a better life for your children?
"You prefered to be ruled by Turks than by Western Europeans " means that although you had war with Turks you even more condemned Catholic Europeans and your Patriarch himself said words like these above. Damn, it isn´t that hard to understand this!
Man these stupid Greeks don`t understand shit! With moving westwards the incorporation of new land was meant, for example in Anatolia and Europe. And you are so illiterate that you can`t even see the difference between economical troubles and bankruptcy. Having troubles in democracy from time to time during our history doesn`t mean that we don`t have democracy at all and accusations like that are just stupid and it just shows that you don`t know or don`t want to know anything about Turkey.
zicco26... Your lack of historical knowledge has outrun your stupidity. You are moving westwards??? Man how much do you earn per month? You are one step before bankruptcy!!! More and more Turkeys are coming against your police, your goverment and the militarist behind them, and the americans behind them (who now have turned their backs to you)in order to have human rights and DEMOCRACY!!! Do you know what this word means?
And why are you blaming us for moving westwards anyway?? What did Alexander (if he ever really was a Greek) Did you asked the native population for permission to come into the new land? America was populated with new residents from europe (the native population went there from asia), the Russians gained land in Central Asia and the Arabs conquered Northern Africa. Man,there are countless examples like these so you better check yourself. You settled and colonized land ,too.
Look at the Babylonians, Aztekes, ancient Chinese and the ancient population of the Indus area, they all had these advantages, too. Although Central Asia has incredibly great landscapes they could sometimes also be rough and life-threatening.
And when comparing ancient Greeks with ancient Turks you must consider in which environment Greeks lived and what kind of land they had. The Agean area has warm summer, mild winter and vulnerable land which are important factors by creating civilazation.
Yeah, believe it or not we were much more kind to than other Christians, thats why you prefered to be ruled by Turks than by Western Europeans. And remember that your miserably population of twelve million Greeks is today a mixture of Albanians, Hellenics, Gypsies, Slavs, some other scum and Turks, which is actually the only good part of you.
But nevertheless the Ottomans DID contibute a functional state system to the Balkans (the Balkans were a difficult place not since us but even since the Romans) with infrastructure, public places and buildings and our comprehensive culture whic after the raise of the Nationalism you largely destroyed. Although there were some privileged people who were forced to convert the vast majority could keep their religion and the orthodox church was autonomous.

LAST FACTOR: Persians were stupid enough to attack, having no sense of tactic.
ItisPointless 3 years ago
2) the Greeks, specifically the Spartans were protected on three sides their only flank was the rear which could not be exposed until later on in the military campaign, which also costed the Greeks the battle at the Hellsgate but it also cost the Perians many soliders and caused sever damage to the Perian ranks.
HELLENICFRONT 4 years ago
The fact that the Greeks lasted as long as they did is attributed to a couple of factors. 1)they had home turf advantage, the Hellsgate was so narrow that a large army could not get through.
HELLENICFRONT 4 years ago
The reality of things is that 300 spartans and nearly 600 thesprotis stood side by side and were simply overwhelmed by the larger Persian army, no monsters or other garbage like that, just larger army. oh well its just a movie but it was an awsome action packed one.
HELLENICFRONT 4 years ago
I dont get the turk dude that wrote the comment below. What does turkey have to do with the battle of Thyrmopolis? Turks had not even become a civilization yet. Your people were nomads in eastern asia. As for the movie it is based on a graphic novel ppl it isnt history.

How would you feel about it?
nimani71 4 years ago
Honestly I feel its freedom of speech... If they are dumb enough to make something like that then let them. Very few people would watch it. 300 was written from the Spartans perspective therefore the Persians would be monsters. If it was written from the Persians perspective the Spartans would be the barbaric cretins.
That is all.
skaKid4Lyfe 4 years ago
Not only I have nothing against freedom of speech but I deeply believe in it. I watched the film and I enjoyed (once more like every other Hollywood film) the staging in which Americans take the Oscar in all over the world the last 20-30 years. But its important for people to distinguish hystory or ancient national mythology from comic or movie fiction stories. If YOU CAN tell the difference I'm satisfied, but what about the others?
nimani71 4 years ago
Its good to know that in some Eastern or Central Eastern countries hystory, myths, beliefs or whatever, are sensitive case and the others should respect that. At least I, once again, admit that the 300 was most respectfull movie than much others refering to our civilization. But I cant say that Iranians feel the same...!!! And I respect Iranians even if they were our enemies...! Later they became and still are our best friends!
nimani71 4 years ago
There is a video that gives some explanations about some serious unaccuracies of the movie. Its "Greek Answer to Hollywood nuts(300 the movie)!". Although I dont agree with the conclusion I suggest you to have a look, to have a clue why some people are upset about this. Dont forget that for some people these arguments are nuts and for other (sometimes whole nations) are case sensitive. Enjoy but respect...!
nimani71 4 years ago
lol this is such bullshit. 1 million? ahaha
iraniandude19 4 years ago
Is there really any Greek who believes that Americans made this movie to flatter Greece???!!! That Americans care about Hellinic history??? That Americans want to push the Hellinic civilization to the world???!!! Dont forget!!! This movie came just in time when there is a need to defame Iranians(Persians) and upgrate the undergrounded spirit of the US Army
nimani71 4 years ago
You are a tard if you think that... And so is nimani71. Why is it that everyone has to find some kind of conspiracy theory? It is a movie based off of a fucking comic book, or graphic novel, whatever you want to call it. My God, if they remade Peter Pan you would find someway that it is anti-Iraq/Iran too... This movie is meant to be fun. Not to be some history channel special... *rolls eyes at the idiots*
skaKid4Lyfe 4 years ago
Dont ask me about conspiracy theories. Ask CIA...! Thats what excactly I said below. US took (stole, once again!!!) parts of the Hellinic history and turned it in comics and stupid propaganda films. I guess most of the Americans learn history from comics...
nimani71 4 years ago
That is all.
skaKid4Lyfe 4 years ago
R U absolutely sure? I mean, R U sure that this comic, film or whatever is almost fiction as you say? I guess you've seen the film and read the comic but do you now the REAL STORY??? Do you know anything about, the 2500 years ago, Hellinic or Persian history??? Can you tell the differences between those events and any modern comic or movie???
nimani71 4 years ago
I must admit that this movie is much more accurate than other stupid unaccurate movies Hollywood made (which are based in fiction in a major part as you may say) like "Alexander the Great" which refers to the great Hellinic king of Macedonia or "Troy" which is a bad copy of Homer's Iliad. I'm not sure U know what I'm talking about but be sure Hollywood does know...
nimani71 4 years ago
I know what history books, and religious writings have to say about it. Neither of us was were really there so all either of us can do is speculate; using the facts we have available. All I'm trying to say is that the film 300 was meant primarily as history based FICTIONAL entertainment.
skaKid4Lyfe 4 years ago
The comic was written to be bad ass and the film was made from that source material with a few (non-plot) minor changes. All it was, was another testosterone fueled ass-kickery movie. It was fun to watch.
That is all.
skaKid4Lyfe 4 years ago
More amd more the Americans are trying to persuade the world that what ever they do is right, that they are the saviours of the planet (who is going to save them I dont know...!:)) and they use any possible way to do that. Hollywood is the most succesful brain-changing and opinion-making machine! They take history, they change it a bit and they give a new story (American friendly version!) and then they say: "Oh, come on, this is not history. Its just a movie..."

Why eliminate a source where you can get money from? Why kill people who can be integrated and work for you? As I wrote the Ottoman Empire was multi ethic like Byzantine before was also and all the nationalities and reliogious denominations ( muslims christians and jews) were not completely isolated from each other but they cooperated, worked and lived together.
zicco26 5 years ago
I forgot that there was for a few months an overtaxation for non-muslims in 41 or 42 because of the second world war. Yes this was shameful along with the excesses in the fiftees in Istanbul.
With farsightedness I meant that the Ottomans made decisions deliberate and it was not always a matter of life and death.
zicco26 5 years ago
You are right when you mourn that the "Rum" were overtaxed and in front of a court it was not always easy for them but remember this was not just because their were Greeks but because their were Christians in the Empire and we didn´t had a secularized jurisdication until 1839 I think but nevertheless vestiges of the old one co-existed with the new until Ataturk.
zicco26 5 years ago
The term "Rum" was used for the Greeks in the Ottoman Empire and you are rightl. It is derived from "Rome". Today we say "Rum" to the Greeks on Cyprus as wel as to the Greeks in Turkey and "Yunan" (ionia) to the Greeks in Greece.
zicco26 5 years ago
Ataturk was a great commander, a bright statesman with strong ideas and he had charisma which appealed to a lot of people. The Republic was not founded overnight but out of an long process which actually has his roots even in the Tanzimat period in the first half of the 19th cenury. When Ataturk proclaimed the Republic in 1923 he had the greatest influence on the state with a big following and indeed he was somehow autocratic but found himself faced with many anti-Republican opponents.
zicco26 5 years ago
What I,very often, see in utubers' Turks is that u stick in past. Huns, Ottomans, war victories 2 centuries or even 1 century ago. Noone is thinking about Turkey today or in the very short future. I hear some Turks implying that Ottomans will return! Trying to originate your roots, your excistance in the world is one thing. Finding your relationships and originations in the new terms of the 21st century and the "universalization" is an other...
nimani71 5 years ago
Hear ye! A Greek is claiming that the Turks here are sticking too much in the past. But what is about you? My impression is that you are actually those who stick too much in the past. I often see Turks writing things like "increase the peace" but i see very few Greeks doing that.
zicco26 5 years ago
You are not wrong in that. Bringing up the good times of your civilization is one thing but bringing up hating, seperation and misleading is another. We have, both sides, a lot of those 2 things... What do you think more reasonable and possible in future? Bringing Ottomans and Byzantines back or proceeding Hellas and Turkey in a powerfull future?
nimani71 5 years ago
Of course the last two!
zicco26 5 years ago
That make us two (at least)!!!
nimani71 5 years ago
Hey zicco.I think you are an intelligent and friendly guy.I live in germany and i have a lot of turkish friends here.I wanna say one thing:I wish peace and friendship will come one day into our two states. We must look forward for a better future. Both of us Turkey and Greece must forget the bad times in our histories...
HellasToni84 5 years ago
I think rather than just to forget the past we should be able to talk about openly and with no tension like the French and Germans do. How many times did these two nations fight against each other? Very often. But look at them now. They get along with each other in such a way as if their historical enmity never existed. And they are today together the two major members of the EU.
zicco26 5 years ago
This is exatly the thing about i´m talking.Look at german and france now. They have the strongest role in europe.Turkey and greece can be the strongest nations in the balkans and in the middle east if they come together!!!
HellasToni84 5 years ago
Man you think the same way that i´m thinking.I´m always bringing up the German-France example to show someone that two great enemies can fix the problems and became two strong allies.
HellasToni84 5 years ago
Just remember: the Ottoman Empire was not a nation state but a multi-ethnic state and in this state the
Greeks, or we say "Rum", were a major minority. Nimani brought an important aspect up somewhere as he wrote
that some regions which were almost autonomous aside from being loyal to the Padisah and to pay taxes. Therefore the main aim was not just to enter a battle blindly but diplomacy and farsightedness played also a role.
zicco26 5 years ago
I agree with you but I would like you to explain what farsightedness means because I didnt find it in my dictionaries and what do you mean "Rum". If you mean Romans thats not correct. Although common roots Romans and Hellins are different people.
nimani71 5 years ago
Few seconds later something came up in my mind. By "Rum" I think you mean that what we say "Romios". If this is true then I, sure, tell you that this has nothing to do with Hellins. I dont want to enter in a big discussion, as non importand at this point, about the geneology of Hellin and Greek(Graikos)and how this became synonimus to Romios so I remain in these.
nimani71 5 years ago
But how many states in this world at this time had and when you are honest you can`t say that Greeks lived worse than Turks but now I want justify such treatments neither though. Of course not.
zicco26 5 years ago
The difference is very obvious for anthropologists, archaiologists and historicians to pay attention but its very convinient for politicians who want to take advantage of their peolpe and voters to use it today. Dont forget that noone knew, not even the Yugoslaves, about (fake) "Macedonia" until the 80's!
nimani71 5 years ago
As it concerns Macedonia culture ...you are right in some way!!! Macedonia was not the only culture with its own origin. There was also the Cycladic Civilization (prehistoric in Cyclides, middle Aegeo Sea), the Minoan Civilization (Crete), Mykinaic Civilization (Peloponissos, S. Greece). Even Athens, Sparte, Korinthos, Efessos, Militos, and many other cities had their own different origin from each other.
nimani71 5 years ago
Ataturk was a great commander, a bright statesman with strong ideas and he had charisma which appealed to a lot of people. I bring to you these words by the book I'm reading recently with the title "KEMALISM - The birth and development of the official ideology of modern Turkey" by Niyazi Kizilyurek, a Turk-Cypriot who was rewarded with the Ampti Ipectsi Price among others! As you can see I dont pay attension to the wikipedia and I'll never will...!
nimani71 5 years ago
Do you take the surname Ataturk literally??? This name was given to him by the parliament and you have to see it in the figurative sense as he was the first president of the Republic and an ideological leader. And it is a popular fallacy that the Turkish Republic was founded particularly by Mustafa Kemal. The founding of the Republic was initiated by the Young Turks from which later the Comitee of Union and Progress(the Republicans)was formed and later Mustafa Kemal participated in it.
zicco26 5 years ago
About "Turks"... Oh please zicco I know you are a reasonable man! Kemal is named "Attaturk". That means "the Father of Turks" unless you disagree... So I dont know anyone who excisted before his father. I believe you understant that we talk about Turkish Nation as a new ordered, democeratic origination that came as a reform of the Ottomans and the islamists.
nimani71 5 years ago
TURKS are the best warriors there have ever been on earth! Especially the Huns..
Downtown03 5 years ago
Hystoricaly speaking the best warriors in the world where Spartans, Atheneans (the best navy), Toltecs, Samurai, Ninja, Vickings, Kozacs, Hitlers' Es Es, Vietcongs and today Mutjahedins. The reason for this is that all these armies have fought upnumbered enemies in battles used higher strategy and won. All the battles that have remained in world history were based on this fact. Greek warriors have remained many times in ancient and modern world history as great warriors...!
nimani71 5 years ago
And one more thing... The Huns were not Turks!!! The Huns were mongols. Turks are a nation that was created by Kemal Attaturk willing to reform and the Ottomans and the Islamists in the 19th and 20th century. Even Ottomans were not Huns although they had mongol roots but they were very different from the Huns.
nimani71 5 years ago
Nimani actually I didn`t want to argue with you again but you are bullshitting and confusing again. First of all the Huns were of course not an uniform ethnicity but in large part they were consisting of Turkic tribes and along with Mongolians later which were included because of cutting land there.
zicco26 5 years ago
Don't mistake them with the Great Mongolian Empire where in turn the Mongolians incorporated Turkish tribes who played also an important role by gaining new land. "Turks are a nation that was created by Kemal Ataturk" What is this nonsense again?! Aren't you tired by affront?
zicco26 5 years ago
How do you like it when I say that the culture in Macedonia has is own origin besides the Greek one? It has doesn't it? I don`t know if you are intending it or just wrongly informed but I don't think that the Greek wikipedia would be a good source for that matter and I suggest valid literature if you intend to get informed about us.

Although American troops are much more sized and advanced they are loosing because of the heavy losses.)
nimani71 5 years ago
As it concers about the battle of Marathon, there were not only 300 Spartans but also few Thibians (another city in Attica) and others but the main power were the Spartans) after the retreating of the rest Hellenic cities army because of the fear of Persians. But Spartans were unfearable warriors trained from the age of 6 years old.

Regarding to Cyprus or this so called genocide I think it doesn`t make sense to start a debate about them here now since your point of view is by far different. You say Eoka is a military organization and for me they are a terrorist organization and I know that you know that I have a different perspective on Cyprus as a well as on the Armenians.
zicco26 5 years ago
Why don´t you start to look on the Turkish conquests in the past less elevated? I can somehow understand you but we also paid a heavy price and a blood shed often enough. To revel too much in the past doesn´t get you the solution for today´s problems.
zicco26 5 years ago
Your geografical position and ethnological situation gives many challenges to your state to improove. This improvement will not come with genocides (dont tell me there were not!) and casus beli. Its up to you how you'll do it, it's up to common sense that peace and corparation is a necessity!
nimani71 5 years ago
It is a fact that Turks incorporated new land, lost it again (like you did before, as so many nations on the whole wide world did) until the crucial wars in the 20th century where the outline of todays`map got gradually manifest. You cannot really blame us just for the conquests since we were not the only ones
who made the decision to do that. I can`t hardly be dissappointed about my entire history as you cannot about yours, right?
zicco26 5 years ago
Greece itself was not treating minorities in the changing years the same democtaic and human way but are trying to blame others for misdoings. Greeks and Turks fought in their history in countless battles but besides that there were also countless alliances, more involuntarily than voluntarily so the ties are firm somehow.
zicco26 5 years ago

I hope you understand me better now.
zicco26 5 years ago
Back in the days it was far away of being a perfect democracy and although we had periodically times with less and times with more democracy we still have deficites till this day. But I think the actual important thing is that the huge reforms of the form of government and in the entire society including new laws by the "dictators" you call were essential to initiate first the way to a democracy, regardless it has deficites or not.
zicco26 5 years ago
Views in Europe where the Muslim society was awesome admired were long forgotten and reforms were not just due, but overdue and our Republican movement within the last chapters of the Empire and of course in the war eventually led to the founding of the Republic.
zicco26 5 years ago
I totally agree with you in one point: you cannot compare Turkey with Greece on the same basis. With Muslim traditions, a larger complexity of social structures, a difficult historical process and some declining elements Turkey alltogether Turkey had especially in the recent chapters of modern times with the ideal of a solid nation state tons of more challenges than Greece and you should bear that in mind.
zicco26 5 years ago
Do I get you right, you make your picture of modern Turkey out of descriptions of the Greek migrators?? Well then my advise to you is that you should seriously change the approach to your point of view. What a picture of Greece and other states would I have when I would stuck on the stories of Turkish refugees from the Balkans? I guess it wouldn´t be an unbalanced view.
zicco26 5 years ago
As it concerns about the Serbians things are very complicated. The whole fact was not about Kroatians, Montenegros and Serbians. Was about controling the way of gas and oil whitch will pass through Balkan. And you or we have a bigger oil co than TEXACO and BP then you know who really is interested to create trouble in Balkans...
nimani71 5 years ago
EOKA was a military organization of Cyprus during the time of British occupation. I dont understand what you mean about EOKA but who ever fight to free his country is a patriot. Dont you think so?
Please, be more careful in the future and get better information. You seem to be a well educated person and not the average Turk. Use it wisely, not fanaticaly and cross your information.
nimani71 5 years ago
Please define me what you mean by Macedonian and Epirus because these are Greek territories like Peloponisos, Thesalia, Thrace, Creta, Cyclides and Dodokanisa, etc. And If someone Greece,as I know, takes a name he dont like he may change it to what ever he likes and when ever he likes!
nimani71 5 years ago
All this picture about modern Turkey that I, the rest Greeks and the rest world have, comes from the people who came as refugess from Turkey not only in Greece but in Europe too, and from the Greek Press whitch in turn takes it from, where else, the CNN TURK AND HURRIET. So, if the picture we have is of the '80s thats because that's what you give to us. You have to improve your picture of your country. I'm glad to see that some wise people have already started. Are you one of them?
nimani71 5 years ago
very well said.
bolotsos 5 years ago
Thats something, also, we cannot be compared to because many times you have created troubles in Greeks that comes to Turkey OR Turkey ORTHODOX who are trying to make ceremonies. Will you protect them and give them their rights as Greeks are?
nimani71 5 years ago
Muslim in Greece, as Catholics, as atheists, as Polytheists (Who believes in the 12 and more ancient Gods), and ever othen minority SHOULD have the same rights as the Orthodox Christians. But they dont officialy! They do typicaly! Greek goverment in on the way to permit Muslims to built a temple in Athens. Gray wolfs, your fanatics, and your goverment are on the way to burn and demolish Ag. Sofia among others. Orthodox most holy temple.
nimani71 5 years ago
First of all you cannot connect my country with yours. Nobody never drove us to international Courts about tortures EXCEPT during dictatorship whitch was an abnormal situation changed by the Greek people with almost armed revolution. Will you do that too? Do you dare? If you do then you can be compared to us!!!
nimani71 5 years ago
Ok, the last comment was jest. You are familiar with Greek things more than a usual Turk internet serfer. Thats very, very suspicius but I'll take my chance because I have nothing to fear. What I ment before about mixing truth and inaccurancies still remains. It would take me many pages to answer so I'll try do it as shortly as I can.
nimani71 5 years ago
once you don,t know ,or want to , the full story why you bring serbia up?
i am not a racist ,my wife is british ,and my best friend is british black.
if the albanians, one day, dare to claim any part of my country... i am cretan,i do have fire arms,i WILL use them!!!
you do not seem to be a fanatic, that is why i still write to you, bat i KNOWthat for your country you would do the same. so did the serbians.
bolotsos 5 years ago
And I don´t like the way how you are triying to sound philantrophical, bla bla bla. Let me remind you that Greeks sympathised with the Serbian butchers in Bosnia and their affecting pseudo feelings for human rights even didn´t hindered Greek officals to meet with them and even the current president of Cyprus is a former member of the Eoka!
zicco26 5 years ago
Weren´t the Slavs in Macedonia and Albanians in Epirus forced to get Greek names? Why are the Muslims the only recognized minority in Greece since there are more? What about the discrimination of the Turks in Eastern Thrace?
zicco26 5 years ago
One of the primary premises for a modern democracy, along with a body of laws, is to elect a governance by the people. This is given in modern Turkey earlier than in modern Greece (please don`t come with your ancient history now.) You shouldn`t blame us too much for torture since the torture was the norm in Greek prisons not a long time ago.
zicco26 5 years ago
Last but not least it plays an important role because of our tremendous challenges. Challenges which Greece can not even imagine. I doubt that you are familiar with what goes on in Turkey today and I strongly suggest that your picture of our policy is from 1980 so get yourself updated. And I bet you got the number of 50% from your gutter paper Ta Nea since it is just bullshit like almost all of the Greek media.
zicco26 5 years ago
It is simply not true when you say that the prime minister cannot make important dicisions without asking the generals, he can of course do that very well. But you must see that military plays a more important role in Turkish policy because its part at the constitution of the Republic and its historical process out of the Ottoman Empire and all its problems which why the laicism plays such an important role.
zicco26 5 years ago

Even if the prime minister is elected.
nimani71 5 years ago
zicco26 take the bullshit out of your mind and put this. In a country where there is no poltical freedom and politicians and other people got to jail just because they say their opinion. In country where 50% of national total income goes to military equipment and weapons whitch are used not for defense in times of war but for keeping internal voices down.
nimani71 5 years ago
And something else : why are you trying to defame Kemalists as dictators? I think it is because you would rather like to see Turkey in the same category like Syria, former Iraq and Iran. Maybe you dream about it I don`t know what goes on in your brains. Or you are such hillbillys that you really don`t know anything about Turkey. We had in our "dictatorship" a multiple party system already when Greece was ruled by the junta. But of course we had huge trouble ,too.
zicco26 5 years ago
Please call us just one scientist and archaeloge who agrees with Herodot´s fairy tails. Of course it is acknowledged that fewer Greeks defeated the Persians but it is also acknowledged that the numeral difference was by far not that much as you maybe try to suggest.
zicco26 5 years ago
7000 greeks(300 spartans,700 thespians,6000from athens and other parts off greece)against 150.000-200.000 persians.Thats are the facts that the most scientist today are believing...

How many times had Mohameth to besiege Konstantinoupolis and why, not only, didnt succeed but he faced disaster of his army and navy? You may call us stupid but I know one thing. You know nothing about our civilization. Solve, first, your "economical troubles", kick off your kemalist military dictators in order to join the democratic and human rights respectable EU. For your childrens sake... If you are wise enough!!! get it zicco and the rest of you?
nimani71 5 years ago
I dont understand why you intend to make criticism about Greek history and civilazation like you are experts... although you dont have a clue! It's not us that told the story of Leonidas. Its scientists, archaiologists from, almost, all over the world!!! But you are right in one thing. There were traitors too. Thats how you took Konstantinoupolis and north Cyprus later on. It was not your "brave" soldiers.
nimani71 5 years ago
zicco26 who told you that there were a million?
like i wrote before the spartians were outnumbered by a few thousands. the trick was that leonidas took the fight in a narrow spot so they could not be surrounded.
very good strategy as simple as that.
ofcourse the movie will be sensationalised we're talking about hollywood after all!!
once you have net access why don't you do some research.
bolotsos 5 years ago
Ok, let`s assume there were about threehundred bodyguards against an army about one million. That means proportional that every single man on the Spartanian side would have beaten over 3300 Persian side. In fact this is a cock and bull story but of course a good story for a Hollywood film.
zicco26 5 years ago
You must know that the spartans didn´t win the battle. But they have stand there for 3 days and gave the rest of greece time too organisize the defend of her land...
HellasToni84 5 years ago
for the history when spartan men were going to war, women(mothers, wifes, etc) were saying to them that:e tan e epi tas.
or you win or you come back dead on the sheild.
they were very mighty warriors and that is all men were doing.training for war... then. now we are lovers.

if i didn't think that it goes for me first i wouldn't say it. that is what i try to do for my three lovely girls.give them a better life than mine, only it would be ruther to spent for schools than guns that goes both ways, greece and turky.
my name is costas and i am from crete.
there were not millions but a few thousants, what leonidas did was to bring the fight in a narrow area so they couldn't go round them, good moove.
hope you did not call me stupid at your last comment.
bolotsos 5 years ago
You are soo stupid that you really think that these legend of beating millions by a few hundred REALLY took place. Someone should tell you mofo`s that when Herodot made his descriptions he tried to emphasise the pathos of the event instead of giving an objective reproduction. "Yeeaah and when they fight Zeus came and blast all the Persians with thunderbolts from his ass." Muhahahaha! Probably you believe in the Easter Bunny, too.
zicco26 5 years ago
That´s from Braveheart,isn´t it?
HellasToni84 5 years ago
Wise words bolotsos! You are right, one of the primary goals of every nation should be to enable a better life for their children, the same goes for you. Do you maybe think we don`t try to do that? And when there are crack hoes, inside and outside ,who want to diminish Turkey`s sovereignty and stability then we have to react adequate that`s it.
zicco26 5 years ago
i would like some exampls about your democracy. i don't mean it in a bad way but don't you think that it's time to wake up? fight for a better life for your children?
bolotsos 5 years ago
"You prefered to be ruled by Turks than by Western Europeans " means that although you had war with Turks you even more condemned Catholic Europeans and your Patriarch himself said words like these above. Damn, it isn´t that hard to understand this!
zicco26 5 years ago
Man these stupid Greeks don`t understand shit! With moving westwards the incorporation of new land was meant, for example in Anatolia and Europe. And you are so illiterate that you can`t even see the difference between economical troubles and bankruptcy. Having troubles in democracy from time to time during our history doesn`t mean that we don`t have democracy at all and accusations like that are just stupid and it just shows that you don`t know or don`t want to know anything about Turkey.
zicco26 5 years ago
our population is mixed because of our life standart.
i don't understant what you mean "we prefered to be ruled" explain please.
there is proove found of the 300, it is not a myth.
bolotsos 5 years ago
Man, You are kissing asses to enter the EU. And I believe you know who's the first ass you have to kiss, ha...! ;)
nimani71 5 years ago
Do you know what this word means?
nimani71 5 years ago
And why are you blaming us for moving westwards anyway?? What did Alexander (if he ever really was a Greek) Did you asked the native population for permission to come into the new land? America was populated with new residents from europe (the native population went there from asia), the Russians gained land in Central Asia and the Arabs conquered Northern Africa. Man,there are countless examples like these so you better check yourself. You settled and colonized land ,too.
zicco26 5 years ago
Look at the Babylonians, Aztekes, ancient Chinese and the ancient population of the Indus area, they all had these advantages, too. Although Central Asia has incredibly great landscapes they could sometimes also be rough and life-threatening.
zicco26 5 years ago
And when comparing ancient Greeks with ancient Turks you must consider in which environment Greeks lived and what kind of land they had. The Agean area has warm summer, mild winter and vulnerable land which are important factors by creating civilazation.
zicco26 5 years ago
Yeah, believe it or not we were much more kind to than other Christians, thats why you prefered to be ruled by Turks than by Western Europeans. And remember that your miserably population of twelve million Greeks is today a mixture of Albanians, Hellenics, Gypsies, Slavs, some other scum and Turks, which is actually the only good part of you.
zicco26 5 years ago
But nevertheless the Ottomans DID contibute a functional state system to the Balkans (the Balkans were a difficult place not since us but even since the Romans) with infrastructure, public places and buildings and our comprehensive culture whic after the raise of the Nationalism you largely destroyed. Although there were some privileged people who were forced to convert the vast majority could keep their religion and the orthodox church was autonomous.
