and as for wolf attacks on humans, typical man eaters are animals that are too weak to take down their regular prey. They often have problems with their teeth and whatnot
So for all the people saying that wolves should not be killed, put yourself in the shoes of a reindeer herder. "Well, wolves are protected so I guess I have to sell all my reindeer and go live in a motel until the money is spent." Doesnt sound enticing, does it? I also want to stress that I am all for conservation, wolves need to be protected, but they also cant be allowed to destroy someones way of life.
I can definately understand the reindeer herders and why they are so pissed off, and I totally agree with the wolf hunting permits, no one can be expected to give up their way of life because the animal causing the problems is protected. BUT, you have to keep in mind that the Wolf is a part of Finlands nature (I am also Finnish), so "kill everything" is DEFINATELY not the answer. The reindeer deaths need to be lessened, but the wolves also have to be protected from overhunting.
Even on a youtube thingy on Finnish reindeer, some Norwegian PC git has to make statements of pacafism, with requests that Finnish UN troops are to bog of from their divisions like cowards. So the Finns are a bunch of cowards?
People don't seem to understand how difficult the situation is for reindeer herders: the big predators kill more than 50% of the reindeer calves in the area where predator density is high. Finding the carcasses is very difficult, so the state compensations are no solution. The wolf tracking job has to be made without any payment. That is why they shoot every wolf they can.
Very interesting statement, when Finland has the most blood filled history with the wolves in western hemisphere.
Wolves have killed hundreds of people in Finland and this has been proven by Antti Lappalainen in his studies. He found 193 kills and he counted only the ones that could be verified from several sources, including the church records of birth and death.
I live in Finland, and many people HATE wolves around here: everyone's got such a wrong image of these beautiful creatures. And what the fuck gives us humans the right to kill them? Just because wolves follow their basic insticts, the need for feed? We can't kill something just because we don't understand its nature or its behavior. Wolves are predators, hunters, they're born to kill. We should respect wolves, not slaughter them; for they haven't done us anything to harm us. >>
damn i hate that kind of tourist's who stops on middle of the road and starts taking pictures of reindeers in finland. at least they could go to side of the road before taking pictures...
Look at how the video's description describes the wolf as 'one of man's oldest enemies'. I guess we're very quick to forget our evolutionary history? The wolf was the first domesticated animal, ever, and humans would have never made it without their dogs to aid in controlling flocks.
LoL, Yes, the US needs its wild life back. I live in Upstate NY and all you see are rodents, coyotes, and deer. If I wanted to see some real predators I would have to travel to the Adirondacks which is a three hour drive for me to see black bears, lynx, and maybe even a Mountain lion(sitings and pictures have been taken.) Oh the glory of nature.
I live in San Diego county. We have lions, bob cats, and linx (that's a giant bob cat). Billions of coyotes. I saw two coyotes last night. Up on Indian land there are bears, but not a wolf in the whole state. Sad.
I have to say I'm a bit disappointed! You call this making news!?
The man interviewed at the beginning says (exactly): "There's nothing in here but room in here, you have to have room for both reindeer and wild beast - decent amounts. There has always been beasts here and..." - now, how did that translation go!?
Yes there are roughly 2000 kills a year but thats a small amount of 200 000 reindeer living wild big part of the year...
+ When ever kill discovered government pays DOUBLE price of it!
Sorry, there was a bit repeating with the word 'here' in that REAL translation, but maybe you got the point...
I know that there are many displeased farmers, but they should be compensated (like they are). The compensation is double the stock price because all corpses are never found.
Yes there has been growth in population of wolfs but it's far from the view this video gave us...
Biggest problem with this reindeer-farming might be that poor stock price of reindeer meat at the moment...
I read in the paper that although they get compensation they have to wait such a long time for an expert like the guy in red in this video to come and determine what killed the animal that the losses start to back up. I guess their real problem is that there are people in Brussels making laws which are stopping them doing something they've done for hundreds of years?
'9pm': That's true but you have to understand that those wolfs would be all killed if there wouldn't be someone neutral considering this - this is only matter of finding compromise with which everyone could be reasonably satisfied (and of course: safety first)... Like they mentioned in the video this provides other sources of livelihood too...
I'm not saying that the wolf population shouldn't be constrained though ( =the amount of wolfs has to have limits)! And since wolf has no other natural enemies than human there has to be possibility to get a killing permit for those wolfs that are too bold in order to keep the people safe! AND it should be Finland (people living there) to decide which are too bold!!
I don't like reporters putting words to someones mouth - if they want people to believe their story they should show the clip where translation matches with the speech! Otherwise the report seems like propaganda! Also they should have told the fraction which this 2000 represents in hole population (,also that they are living most of the time WILD, not in a closure - so wolfs are not violating peoples territory), and about the compensations!
This video is "a bit" provoking, otherwise good...
Wolfs are not threating anything and moust wolfes in Finland come from Russian side. Besides thay get money from state if their reindeers dies becouse of wildanimal attack.
The ever increasing? ye, 250 wolfs in Finland during 2005, now about 170.

In Finland, a wolf has NEVER, EVER knowingly killed a human being. NEVER.

Bullshit... Not in a 100 years, but beafore that that happend sometimes.

Killings ended when the predating wolves were taken out. Typical man eater is healthy alpha male, over 60 kg of weight.
Most of the victims were children and 5 year old kids were the most popular prey according to statistics.
