Well a lot of Christians believe the country was founded on Christian values, but it was really founded on a combination of Greek and Enlightenment values. All religions, by their nature, are authoritarian and intolerant of other religions. You don't get to vote for who God is, and worshiping another god is considered a sin.
For instance, if you want to treat gays differently from other people, you have to come up with a rational argument for how that doesn't violate principles of equality. You can't just say "God says so!" No religion gets special treatment in the law.

We don't even need ethics courses. All kids need to know is that morals aren't morals if they don't stand up to scrutiny. That's the problem: kids are taught morality like it's requires no rationale at all. It's just some code handed down like a family heirloom. That's why you end up with people who not only can't come up with a remotely defensible reason why it's wrong, but don't think they have to. For instance the idea that homosexual behavior is wrong is easily defeated by the "consenting adults" rule, which states that as long as what consenting adults do together doesn't hurt anyone else, they're free to do it. They can have sex with whomever they like however they like... they can get in a ring and fight with each other... whatever they want. It's just about the most unassailable ethical principle in existence. It's bulletproof.

Sorry, you just committed the "appeal to authority" error. It's a way of avoiding a necessary justification by simply saying something is wrong because some official//law/religion says it's wrong. It fails because no authority is perfect, or regarded as perfect, by anyone. For example, the Bible recommends that women who are not virgins when they marry be executed. Of course everyone, even Christians, realize that is deeply wrong. You can't just appeal to an authority. You have to make sense.

As a simpler example, remember that alcohol used to be an illegal drug, and now it's considered perfectly acceptable. The same is happening right now with marijuana, and after it is legalized it will, in short order, be viewed no differently than alcohol. The lesson is that just because something is illegal doesn't make it wrong. In the case of alcohol, the law was clearly wrong.

As my brother has, I have served in many countries, & growing up as an army brat we lived in even more, plus a number of these great United States. And, what seems so out of place is that for all this country wants to be, we trip ourselves up by always finding someone to hate or blame for whatever.
