chabal was a great player one of the best but to compare him to lomu just is not fair ,lomu was and is a rugby god and always will be ,i honestly cant see another player beating him, just think of what might have happenened if he didnt get sick,it would have been the stuff of legends,he could/would have been untouchable.i feel honoured to have seen him play!
as if people genuinely compare anyone to jonah lomu, obviously never watched a full game with him playing because unlike chabal he can play a full game
come on... i'm french but i think it's a disgrace to compare chabal, ok a good strong player, and this absolute legend... it's like compare walcott and the "brazilian"ronaldo phenomeno...
i'm french and chabal is overrated pussy playing in a gay club for rich people called racing metro or also "retirement castle metro for old pussy players" , lomu is a fucking legend the best winger and one of the best rugby players ever so "chabal vs lomu" wtf? lomu by far far far!
Yes, he smashed the English in 95. But, he was not nearly as effective against the South Africans, he tried running over Joost (one of the smaller guys) and ate turf. The Boks were also able to exploit his slow turnaround time by chipping kicks right over his head.

@OGTactiqz ...not even worthy of mentioning in the same sentence....both the Tuilagis are ordinary compared to Lomu....they're even ordinary compared to Nonu.....Lomu was a freak.......plain and simple....he was to rugby what Michael Jordan was to basketball or Don Bradman was to cricket.............there'll probably never be another rugby player who make as big an impact on the game
@Aussiephil99 I agree that there can never be another lomu cause lomu's style of play was unique.But to say that the Tuilagi brothers are ordinary compared to him? c'mon, that's just too much of an understatement. You try and put Jonah in front of the biggest Tuilagi (Henry) and you'll see what the difference is..Yeah Lomu may seem a league above Alesana and the others cause of his powerful runs and ball skills, but that doesn't make the Tuilagi normal. It just makes Lomu even more formidable.
@MonkeyDWolf ...with all due respect you are 20 years old...you were 4 when Lomu was at his peak......you have no understanding of his impact on the game at the time. In 1995 backs over 100kg were unheard of....they are common place now. In 1995 he was often more than 30kg heavier than his opposite number....and quicker!!!. The Tuilangis aren't even as good as Maa Nonu........and he's just a good player...not a great player.....Lomu was beyond great!
@Aussiephil99 Good sir, I understand quite well that Lomu was a great player, but that does not make the Tuilagis ordinary, it just makes Lomu even more formidable an opponent. The Tuilagis have been able to hold their own against top tier opponents around the world, that in my humble opinion is not ordinary. Thus, I agree that Lomu and Nonu are of a different caliber compared to the Tuilagis, but that in itself is not enough cause to render them "ordinary". All in all, they're all great players
that's a bullshit comparison. . . .you could pair loads of people with maradonna in soccer, but i'ma south african and i'll dare say, there's no wing with quite as great a combination of strength and speed as Jona lomu had. . . .that's what made him great
@doczoc how am i a tit, im just commenting on this as you are saying some towards the subject where you are attempting to make me look like a 'tit' where you make you're self look like the 'tit', manu tuilagi is a future beast (lomu) end off.
Lomu loves the game, he was the only NZ player to have a great match when France beat them in the semi, and one of only a few NZ players who had the respect for the game and opposition to congratulate the winning players after the match and swap jerseys, rsther than running for the dressing room and crying/complaining, big ups for Jonah
Best offensive rugby player of all time, the fasted big man in any sport. I love him in his early 7s days, 15 guys couldn't stop him, try 7 wee guys, crazy good
@TheNzhustla i am showing respect, but at the end of the day he was just a big runner, all players now are giants 6.5 + mostly. he was just big for his time, all it took was a few people to tackle him early on before he could pick up pace, now i think he wouldnt be anything as good as he was, he would be the same size as everyone else, and would have bigger guys running at him, and his tackling was very bad.
lomu was better at running, chabal is the better all round player by far. To be honest lomu's defence was very poor and his passing game wasnt amazing and wasnt needed. he was there to run, once teams started to stop him, he was just an average player. At that level theyre all big now, he wouldnt be that special now :S still a nice man and a great runner.
@rugbylover95 sorry your suggesting chabal has hands? and isnt there just to run into people? it shows that after maybe one epic season teams have figured chabal out and he makes alot less yards, whereas after four years and a kidney transplant lomu could still do that to the english in 1999. and he would be special now, he was awesome, nuf said
@rugbylover95 you say once teams start to stop him,he was just an average player,i think your forgetting that teams couldnt stop him,strong enough to hand people off of who were faster then him,fast enough to run around people like chabal,and you said chabal is a better all round player,no one remembers all round players,lomu will be remembered forever for being original,the most exciting player to watch at world cups,smashing people out the way,scoring shitloads of trys,he is a true legend.
don`t think there will ever be a powerhouse like jonah lumo,, he was and always be a total LEGEND,.. it has been a total pleasure seeing this man in action in rugby,, he virtually single handed destroyed ENGLAND,,,,and the one memory i will always have ,, will be when he went through mike catt,,,,MR LUMO the legend
lomu's not even that good, theres players who arn't even in the all blacks that are in the super 14 who could destroy him. rugby is alot different than it use to be
@benjamintaylor2010 your earlier comment indicated at a condition, possibly mental defectivenes or intelligence related, i concluded it was mental retardation.
@Arty288 Using intelligent speech won't hide the fact that you clearly have an erection for either lomu or chabal. Insulting me isn't helping your argument, its just making you look like a fanboy. Anyways, I personally think that comparing the two is similar to Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson; both amazing players but the sport was much different in each other's eras.
@benjamintaylor2010 i personally would have said that what I typed was more so general speech, i guess it highlights the different levels that we operate at.. i don't mentally exert my self when replying to comments on Youtube.
Chabal and Lomu are generally of the same Era even if separated by many years.
@benjamintaylor2010 What absolute rubbish. He got on the field and went to the top with an illness that most people would keel over and die from. BTW: Isn't it the Super 15 now?
chabal vs lomu chabal is a ransid player he doesnt work for the team and thinks hes better then any player in his side his hand are shite his work rate is appaulling he go found out when playing the all blacks an got smashed by collins an thts when you noticed his lack of heart not daring to carry again a great number 8 in his time like dallagio wud make chabal look like a school boy
I personally do not think Lomu would last if he came in in todays game...(with the same attitude)... Like these guys said, everyone today is bigger...
Im not trying to say he is anywhere in the same league but someone like matt banahan is:
A) big? check
B) Fast? check
C) strong? check
However no one gives him the room on the pitch. Just like the latter years of robinsons career, everyone knew space was deadly so they closed in before he got a chance...
I never said Banahan was great or even international worthy, however i was merely identifying that the strengths lomu had are similar to that of banahan (i know Lomu was a class above) and banahan rarely powers through defence because of the defensive abilities these days, identify a danger and give no space..
Last time I checked Chabal was not the most dangerous frenchman in the french team...infact judging by his appearances on the International scene chabal is no more than a super sub designed to score when the opposition is dying at the end. No offence to the guy, i love seeing him play well.
I never said Lomu wouldnt be able to tackle anyone. Rugby is not all about the ability to tackle, look at Ronan O'gara, picked time and time again for his other abilities not his (continued)
Look at peter stringer, he can tackle large guys too...if you do it right its relatively easy to big down someone... my point is Lomu would be targeted leaving 2 scenarios:
1) the ball would never get to him on the wing due to tackling the centres with a rush defence
2) he would get the ball on the wing and be surrounded by 2-3 defenders...
the only real impact lomu could have on todays game is a one on one or 5-10 metres from the try line...
@bidefordrfc I doubt any man in today's game of rugby has the tackling ability to stop a man of his weight running at that speed. Besides - they just did everything possible to get the ball to Jonah
Ok... you have someone like Alensa Tuilagi nowadays who is probably near the weight of Lomu back in the day and he can run fast... Teams do not allow him any space. 10 metres out and he comes at speed then you're probably doomed to concede a try, same as with Lomu, but you shut down the ball before it gets to Lomu or constrict him so that he cant take it at pace or has no room and he is useless
Jason Robinsons twighlight years were pretty dull due to the fact no one gave room
...I know he was a different sized player but the point is in this professional era where video analysis etc is so so so key threats are identified and the gameplay is adapted to the threat....players like Jonny Wilkinson were targeted against france a few years ago because of the danger he was... players are giving the advice and the help to adapt to each game as it comes... As i said, I doubt Lomu would not be the danger he was in todays game
@bidefordrfc Lomu in his peak would break most tackles today - he needed 10 yards NZ squad could make that for him if he dropped back far enough - he can break props, second rows flankers anyone. I'm yet to see the Jonah Lomu of today
The reasons you don't see anyone like that today is because they are never given the room. Defensive tactics have changed. Given space Lomu would demolish teams, but in todays game my argument is he would not be allowed to have space. NZ can do all they want to give him his 10 yard run up, but the ball would be stopped before then, or he would be smothered...
of course you cannot keep track all day, but the majority of the time i believe he would get spoiled ball.
@bidefordrfc I agree Lomu probably wouldnt be as effective these days however I think Banahan and Lomu would never be in the same league. Lomu was more than just quick big and strong, he could read the game and had a great step, both of which I don't think Banahan has. Banahan's a battering ram, Lomu was more.
I have never seen Chabal have a genuinely good game. He gets dumped so easily, which leaves me wondering where his reputation came from? His size, or look? Definitely not in his game.
@DeadEvilinit: not the same..not many teams change a game plan for one man. That can and has only happen because of Jonah lomu and you can see the south african captain saying the same.
@TheLoyalhuman Not true. There are many players like this. Matfield? He can cripple your game. Brussow totally stuffed everyone in 09, teams had no answer. Every team has their strong area that you need to plan against. every top team has it's kingpin.

Anyways, I personally think that comparing the two is similar to Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson; both amazing players but the sport was much different in each other's eras.
benjamintaylor2010 7 months ago
@benjamintaylor2010 i personally would have said that what I typed was more so general speech, i guess it highlights the different levels that we operate at.. i don't mentally exert my self when replying to comments on Youtube.
Chabal and Lomu are generally of the same Era even if separated by many years.
Arty288 7 months ago
@benjamintaylor2010 What absolute rubbish. He got on the field and went to the top with an illness that most people would keel over and die from. BTW: Isn't it the Super 15 now?

I don't think this is a fair comparison lol - no comparison to Lomu is a fair comparison!
This shouldn't diminish Chabal's reputation! Chabal is an amazing hitter. Lomu is just better :)

Best balance, footsteps and a smart player too. He could have been even better if he were not so lazy...
So talented!

@ghune LMAO. so true! We polynesians do get lazy. All the talent in the world but we'd rather kick it at home and EAT!!

But still man most pacific islands are agriculture based.
Very hard work for not so much money.
Here in New zealand its prety different.

@bidefordrfc 2 - 3, maybe 4 good or decent defenders is far greater than matt banahan....
joe808boyz 9 months ago
@joe808boyz
I never said Banahan was great or even international worthy, however i was merely identifying that the strengths lomu had are similar to that of banahan (i know Lomu was a class above) and banahan rarely powers through defence because of the defensive abilities these days, identify a danger and give no space..
bidefordrfc 9 months ago
@bidefordrfc wtf man have you even seen Lomu?! That guy was a fucking tank! If he could take down Chabal he could take down anyone.
Lefauoletanoa 9 months ago
@Lefauoletanoa

@Lefauoletanoa
.....tackling ability.
Look at peter stringer, he can tackle large guys too...if you do it right its relatively easy to big down someone... my point is Lomu would be targeted leaving 2 scenarios:
1) the ball would never get to him on the wing due to tackling the centres with a rush defence
2) he would get the ball on the wing and be surrounded by 2-3 defenders...
the only real impact lomu could have on todays game is a one on one or 5-10 metres from the try line...
bidefordrfc 9 months ago
@bidefordrfc I doubt any man in today's game of rugby has the tackling ability to stop a man of his weight running at that speed. Besides - they just did everything possible to get the ball to Jonah
MrCharlieBailey 8 months ago
@MrCharlieBailey
Ok... you have someone like Alensa Tuilagi nowadays who is probably near the weight of Lomu back in the day and he can run fast... Teams do not allow him any space. 10 metres out and he comes at speed then you're probably doomed to concede a try, same as with Lomu, but you shut down the ball before it gets to Lomu or constrict him so that he cant take it at pace or has no room and he is useless
Jason Robinsons twighlight years were pretty dull due to the fact no one gave room
bidefordrfc 8 months ago
@MrCharlieBailey
...I know he was a different sized player but the point is in this professional era where video analysis etc is so so so key threats are identified and the gameplay is adapted to the threat....players like Jonny Wilkinson were targeted against france a few years ago because of the danger he was... players are giving the advice and the help to adapt to each game as it comes... As i said, I doubt Lomu would not be the danger he was in todays game
bidefordrfc 8 months ago
@bidefordrfc Lomu in his peak would break most tackles today - he needed 10 yards NZ squad could make that for him if he dropped back far enough - he can break props, second rows flankers anyone. I'm yet to see the Jonah Lomu of today
MrCharlieBailey 5 months ago
@MrCharlieBailey
The reasons you don't see anyone like that today is because they are never given the room. Defensive tactics have changed. Given space Lomu would demolish teams, but in todays game my argument is he would not be allowed to have space. NZ can do all they want to give him his 10 yard run up, but the ball would be stopped before then, or he would be smothered...
of course you cannot keep track all day, but the majority of the time i believe he would get spoiled ball.
bidefordrfc 5 months ago
@bidefordrfc I agree Lomu probably wouldnt be as effective these days however I think Banahan and Lomu would never be in the same league. Lomu was more than just quick big and strong, he could read the game and had a great step, both of which I don't think Banahan has. Banahan's a battering ram, Lomu was more.
schoolboy699 8 months ago
@schoolboy699
Agreed, although hopefully for bananamans sake he will improve his game more.
I only picked him because his name popped into my head....tuilagi (alensa) is probably a better comparison...

I have never seen Chabal have a genuinely good game. He gets dumped so easily, which leaves me wondering where his reputation came from? His size, or look? Definitely not in his game.

Chabal eat Lomu ! Chabal Nice Player !!
nico61290 10 months ago
@DeadEvilinit: not the same..not many teams change a game plan for one man. That can and has only happen because of Jonah lomu and you can see the south african captain saying the same.
TheLoyalhuman 10 months ago
@TheLoyalhuman Not true. There are many players like this. Matfield? He can cripple your game. Brussow totally stuffed everyone in 09, teams had no answer. Every team has their strong area that you need to plan against. every top team has it's kingpin.
