I am a HUGE fan of the show, but I couldn't say it's perfect. It features a few historical mistakes. Though the story is set in 1895, they made much of the imprisonment for debt of Mrs. Arless, but "debtors' prisons" were abolished in 1869! Found a few more in series 2 and 3, but not gonna make a big deal about it. It's still a beautiful show! We historians are way too picky LOL!!!
1895? Aside from the telegram service there is no way I would have realised that the story had such a late setting. Indeed, the setting appears almost Austenian.
It's difficult to imagine that motor vehicles were being sold to the public (albeit in very small numbers) and powered flight was just 8 years away.
@ElfoBlanco I just felt I should also add that the term "purple" was invented by Crayola, and the crayons themselves weren't released until the 1900's. Miss Lane uses the word in the dress shop scene. =D
almost everything - have you seen the couple of hideous frilly things she wears in Ep 8? *ugh*. but such a good show, i'm obsessed! yh, everything else she wears is pretty awesome!
"lips like a hen's backside!" So funny, if you understand the reference.

@pianokeys91 ~ I didn't realise Crayola had been going so long. Purple; old English - purpul, Latin - purpura, (ancient) Greek porphura.

When Mark Heap has finished in Candleford, please could he go to Coronation Street and be Roy Cropper's long lost brother.

More like Statham's great-grandfather. I can definitely see where the neuroses came from.
