If you ever saw trailers being built, it's amazing how that monocoque chassis doesn't rip apart dragging the rest. I think they are limited to 115 units but trying to get approval to pull 150.
@robertgift I drive for triple crown. The trailers set to trucks like any normal trailer. We have a valv e near the back that has 3 settings. H for highway use, T for transfer (to train) which raises the trailer up for hooking to the rail bogey's (the train wheel section) and R for rail which lowers the trailer. when set to r it doesnt really lower the trailer so much as bring the wheel UP when attached to a bogey.
@asulca593 nah the trailers are a heavy duty, because of the added stress of the train pulling them. they cant carry quite as much freight because of the weight but shipping on the train like that brings shipping costs down. less drivers = less fuel and payments to said drivers. its pretty efficient.
Are those still 53 ft trailers? They look a lot longer. OTR truckers though the trailer trains of the 70s and 80s took work away from them - these dont even need railcars anymore. It's actually kind of scary to think that they've automated the process of getting the Chinese crap to us a lot quicker now.
seems like the fore most trailers would have to take a lot of strain from the weight of the rest of the consist...i'm suprised they don't pull apart...
so is all the weight of the following trailers riding on the king pin of the very first trailer, or is there some kind of subframe on the railcars that takes the strain off of he king pins?
i work at the fort wayne terminal and i get the pleasure of hooking up all of the trailers for the trains to pick up. anyone who thinks there job is hard join our crew and you'll go running back to your old job...LOL!!!
i also work for triple crown, and im sorry man.. if you think its that hard of work, go back to bein a door greeter at walmart. its not that bad at all
That is one disturbing mechanical bell, they should replace it or something. It sounds cool at first and then it starts to mess with your head. It's just a terminal crossing so maintenance is considered no issue.
The Trailer @ 3:32 is "Ex CN".

Interesting! Thank you.
Would like to see the first set of wheels closer. (trucks) What are the boxes for?
Also would like to see the last truck.
Would love to see how these trailers are set on trucks.
Why is the front of the first trailer lower?
Seems like a very efficient means of shipping.
Trailers closer together means less wind resistance.

@Obeyfez2008 Thank you.
Are the trailer wheels free spinning? Looks like they might contact pavement at some grade crossings.
Do they ever turn from wind?
What were the trailers whichad a single axle of railroad wheels? Thoughthey were called roadrailers.
Thank you.

Seems like the first 5 or 6 trlrs would have to much wt on the frame off the trlr and the king pin?
cobraman96 1 year ago
i imagine you would have to really feather the throttle to avoid ripping one of those trailers in half

awesome ive always wondered how they hook up roadrailers
GSMR1702 2 years ago
each trailer is built to take the 200 ton strain of a regular train car, but only adds 800 lbs to the weight of the trailer vs. a non roadrailer.
