What men of genious were the dubliners, just fancy having the great Luke Kelly & this great Sean Cannon in your group let alone all the others, Pure MAGIC.
@BarryBurtonfan Thanks for response. First time I sang it at a session I was corrected. i think it might be a bit odd for the Newry highwayman to go to Covent Garden to see "the play". Anyway it is a great song and Sean is up there among my favourite singers and the song is now part of my repertoire.
I met Sean a few times in Manchester doing various gigs -a great unassuming man with a wealth of talent . . .He was much reveared when he lived in England .
@7oct1936 is Damolly near Newry? did u know the Murphy family who lived ( i think on Damolly Rd) ? spent many a holiday in ireland, Warren point/Newry, just curious
I saw him about 30 years ago in Coventry (possibly in the folk club at the Burnt Post). He was superb then and judging from this recording he has continued to be superb!
yeah hes a regular visitor 2donegal,a crowd of us had a major late session in ballyliffin with his son a couple of years ago,hear hes back this direction on aug 22
spent two weeks on tour with sean last year in croatia,woke me up every morning with his banjo and very loud singing,lovely voice! just the ticket for a hangover!!
the best song that he ever sang so sad and yet so irish

@osammyboy93
Why would it be odd for a Newry man to go to Covent Garden?
It only says he was born in Newry,a Newry man can travel.

I saw Sean sing at the White Swan, Fallowfield, Manchester, three or four times in the '90s. What a beautiful voice, and what a character.
