The video audio is stereo, if you plug an earphone, you will listen to the English commentary on the right ear, but the German one will be heard on the left, that's an amazing trick.
@idontcare80 You meant "Mmmm... Diesel." right? You know you can't deny that they're MUCH better than your extremely inefficient and super conformist gasoline engines...
@TDIpowerification Much better how? Even with all of the new emissions crap (NOx trap, etc) the TDIs are LEVs at best (so are Ford F-150s), most gasoline powered cars are ULEVs or PZEVs. So diesels are filthy. The Golf TDI has only 140 hp, the same as a Honda Civic. Even with the same power output the Civic manages to accelerate quite a bit faster. So diesels are slow. Because diesel releases more CO2 when burned, the Golf (despite better mpg) and Civic will have the same carbon footprint.
So, you should see that you can't really gain anything by using diesel. Now you can consider that these diesel engines require an iron block (a typical aluminum block isn't strong enough to be used with a diesel), a turbocharging system, an intercooling system, a NOx trap or urea injection, a catalytic converter, a particulate filter and a hugely expensive high pressure direct injection system and you should realize how ridiculous diesels really are.
I used to drive one of the older Mercedes diesels. Noisy, always rattling, power lag at the start... This one looks like it has taken care of all of that!
...no this kind of engines are so old now..the next generation is rotor engine ! yeah !
Rotor engine ( mazda car ) has a high technology, high fuel saving and a realy good design ( small box which you can lift with one hand !! ) watch the rotor engine model 32 youtube video..byy VROOOM !
@bnladen09 you dont know what the hell are you talking about. The rotary engine's blueprints exist since 1940's and still almost no one uses it because its not economical, although its compact and powerful.Shut the fuck up please
Merc you can do away with that whole clusterfuck of gears in the back of the motor and simply slip the sprocket right onto the crankshaft. It won't hurt a thing.
is a bad idea ensamble all timing component s in back of engine vbecause if want change pieces or have a problem must disensamble all back part of the engine?????'
German engineering always lean toward perfection but at a cost of mass produce and reliability at cost ..no wonder they lose the WWII hehe they couldn't help them self in making a more simplified product. i still prefer ford engine or GM ..who cares about global warming..lets enjoy while it last..
@theandy4ever yeah right, like you can kill me?, do me a favor list what you did is saving this planet?? none ..so who cares about you when i destroy this planet with my car exhaust..none..enjoy while it last..go red!..used your car and smoke the world gray..btw you cannot stop me right? :)
@wyunaboy i was talking about the fact that you dont care , i drive to ,but its not like i dont care i mean i dont burry batteries in my backyard or leave garbage in the wild . there are lot of things you shouldnt do but can because it easier
@theandy4ever what you just do is nothing to what cars companies emitted green house gas, even with all they bullshit like hybrid, this merc diesels and 'greener transportation' is just a diversion so they don't have to pay for their garbage. the only way people can truly save the planet is by going back to stone age...e.g: start walking again. if we cannot, so just enjoy it then, use big block V8..at least you are being honest to your self and others.
Your right! German in one ear, English in the other, it's like a German language lesson (or an English one, depending on your language of birth! Great. And what a very educational and technically beautiful animation!
All I know is that at one point in recent history, Mercedes made some really great engines. I just love raising my hood of my 300TDT 6cylinder diesel and looking at the fine engineering and excellent quality in that engine. It doesn't accelerate very fast, it tops out at 80 MPH but it's a beauty.
@ubuntunoobz I guess I have some kind of mechanical problem. The damn speedometer has a 140 top speed? But I can barely get it above 80mph. I guess I need to consult a mercedes expert mechanic.
@Aufmotzer You can only understand both languages if you know both languages! I can only understand one of the languages, guess which one. But yes, nice video and nice audio.
@irltractor why would biodiesel not work so well in common rails? Do you mean vegetable oil? And do you actually have experience that it doesn't work in common rails? I don't think any diesel engine would behave differently with bio-diesel or hot vegetable oil. I have limited experience with some 7.3 liter international engines however.
Biodiesel does work in common rail engines but most manufacturers will not recommend it. This is due to the elevated pressures that common rail injectors operate under. The viscosity of Biodiesel is higher than that of diesel (i.e. it is thicker). Also most modern common rail (and direct injection) engines have electronic fuel injection and often the engine will run poorly because the sensors will detect the increase in thickness and the ecu will think there is something wrong.
Is this the system where they use a small tubo for low revs so you get less lag, and then at higher revs when the bigger turbo has, um, sped up comes in which gives you the high power but no lag? Or was that paragraph just full of shit? :-)
the pistons look like the top of them is sunk into the body of the piston. is this new because i have never seen this before. any info would be much appriciated
Not really. Many direct injection engines have it that way, in order for the fuel to disipate in the cylinder without touching the piston and cylinder in a liquid state. It also causes the fuel to be properly swirled though the cylnder. Indirect injectors or carburator deliver the fuel in gas form BEFORE they enter the cylinder, direct injectors don´t!
I've seen this piston design in BMWs as well. From what I've heard, the biggest benefit is a more efficient downward force from the combustion. In other words, the shape helps to direct energy "upward" vs. conventional designs that merely increase pressure in all directions.

common rail diesels suck balls, an older non turbo diesel has:
1, better fuel consumption
2, loads more torque
3, cheaper to make, service and are well more reliable
4, home servicable to the home mechanic
5 don't kick out black soot before the turbo spools up (and they say common rail is cleaner!)

it's not possible
i have done such work once.
you need the whole donor car.
this engine management system requires data from the wheel sensors, for the abs, brake assist, traction control, cruise control and other gadgets.
you also need to gearbox, dif fromt his engine.
unles you know how to mount the wheel sensors to your old car, it wil never work.
a new car has a huge amount of wires, you would need to adept every, to beabled to connecter the rear ligths(example)to the new wire system.
