  • neither Sir Ian or the French live in Brooklyn- so you have officially been taken to task- whoever the hell you are.

  • "Gu-doe."

Oh, I will never live that down. LOL.

  • Guh-doh??? wtf? Goh..doh... it is Godo... it's French so ignore the "T" like in ballet

  • I like that the students took their time.

  • Nice.

  • ....who cares how you pronounce it....and this is America.

  • you go hollywood. after all this isn't even america- it's brooklyn. the choice was not whether to pronounce it this way or that way- the choice is pronounce it our way or.....we'll break your nose!

  • living in north america- we decided to keep it consistent with our neighbors.

  • GODot

  • that would be correct.......IN FRANCE.

  • I'm just going with what Beckett said. But he may have had it wrong, he only wrote it.

  • in French.

  • Then he translated it into English.

Wikipedia: Beckett himself said the emphasis should be on the first syllable, and that the North American pronunciation is a mistake [3]. Etymologically the name is French, which (at least in the case of France) places equal emphasis on both syllables - "goh-doh".

  • @owilde1 It carries over to the English translation as well. Professional stageings have the actors pronounce it "Goh-doh." Sir Ian McKellen pronounces in "Goh-doh," and he's an acclaimed and respected Shakespearean actor, so I think he knows a LITTLE more about drama than you do. And to top it off, Beckett himself confirmed that if he'd meant for it to be pronounced "Guh-doh," he wouldn't have spelled it "Godot." My family speaks French, so don't try to take me to task on this.

  • @thegorillasnake "Beckett himself said the emphasis should be on the first syllable, and that the North American pronunciation is a mistake".......our production was in North America- mistake or not the tradition had been established.

  • I liked it. Very good work. Is this the same school who put on the first ever high school production of The Producers? :)

  • yes that would be us. check out the many fine youtube clips of that historic production.

  • Its not GuDOT its GODOT!

    jeez

  • maybe if we were in france and were affected- which we were not. double jeez.

  • In Britain and France it is pronounced gOdot. In North America it is pronounced godOt. Both are common - Beckett intended the first.

  • indeed.

Still quite a good high school production!

  • oh btw... how can I found the rest of it?

  • you guys are really really good. I loved it.

I'm studying Waiting for godot for my drama course in college this term... thank you for the help

  • Excellent acting. I saw only the last bit of this scene at a school performance, you guys are brilliant though.
