you go hollywood. after all this isn't even america- it's brooklyn. the choice was not whether to pronounce it this way or that way- the choice is pronounce it our way or.....we'll break your nose!
Wikipedia: Beckett himself said the emphasis should be on the first syllable, and that the North American pronunciation is a mistake [3]. Etymologically the name is French, which (at least in the case of France) places equal emphasis on both syllables - "goh-doh".
@owilde1 It carries over to the English translation as well. Professional stageings have the actors pronounce it "Goh-doh." Sir Ian McKellen pronounces in "Goh-doh," and he's an acclaimed and respected Shakespearean actor, so I think he knows a LITTLE more about drama than you do. And to top it off, Beckett himself confirmed that if he'd meant for it to be pronounced "Guh-doh," he wouldn't have spelled it "Godot." My family speaks French, so don't try to take me to task on this.
@thegorillasnake "Beckett himself said the emphasis should be on the first syllable, and that the North American pronunciation is a mistake".......our production was in North America- mistake or not the tradition had been established.
neither Sir Ian or the French live in Brooklyn- so you have officially been taken to task- whoever the hell you are.

In Britain and France it is pronounced gOdot. In North America it is pronounced godOt. Both are common - Beckett intended the first.
