a song from a long ago time. But the protestors probably saved a lot of young men from dying in Vietnam. "It's the rules, not the soldiers, that are my real enemy" sums up what most hippies were about back then.
This was a big hit in his home town of Detroit Mi just as all of Bob Segers music was. We were aware of and behind Bob Seger long before he was known nationally.....
Think the raw lyrics and pointed anti-establishment statement may have kept this from being a bigger hit...I am retired military, but I defended the right for people like Seger to make music like this, for people to live life as they see fit as long as they don't go around making other people's life hell (murderers, theifs, etc.). I may not have partook in the hash/marijuana scene but I believe in people living in harmony and using their talents to the best of their abilities. RR never forgets
seger played my high school dance at troy high in troy michigan in 1969. this album was out already and everyone in detroit-ann arbor area had it. between songs we kept yelling for him to play 2+2 but he kept declining.....dont know why....everyone loved it back in the day. I see alot of you posting comments dont know about this song. hard to believe it was hot back then,at least to us. guess you had to be there. glad I was.
@TheBabyboomkidof53 I went to N.Farmington. He played the same out there. Went to the Palidium in downtown Birmingham and saw them along with Mitch Ryder and Alice Cooper. Good hash abounded and the beat was real.
@stubbsflugel I spent many a night at the birmingham paladium back in the day myself. seen all the detroit greats there myself.as well as bands around the world.I seen seger more times then I can count as most of us did from back then. spent many a night at the grande ballroom and east town theater as well. one thing about back then is everyone shared their reefer and hash with everyone around them. I dont partake anymore but I still think it all ought to be leagalized.
1st time I heard this song was in student union at Easterm Mich, instantly loved it and still do 40 some years later,a classic that never became a national hit..seger before he became commercial
jack white named this his favorite bob seger song on the colbert report.. the flip side of ramblin gamblin man 45.. always sounded good in my 45 rpm recordplayer in my 56 chevy 4 door post .. great anti war song
@charlie blues... caps lock critique? I'm here for the tunes, but I'll always engage with a person who trolls to 'edit' others... have you checked into 'spell check'? Ya' don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows... I give credit to those who used their media time to speak their minds... some Seger things resonated in the protest movement, and he didn't try to go bubble-pop, on himself, or his audience, until his Silver Bullet days, perhaps. He lost me a bit, then. HOT SOUND.
I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH THE COMMENT BELOW THIS ONE. THE RECORDS FROM THAT ERA WERE TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE TAPE ( YES THE SESSIONS WERE RECORDED ON TAPE AND THE TAPE WAS A COUPLE OF INCHES WIDE, THAT IS IT HELD A LOT OF DATA) AND FROM THERE DIRECTLY TO THE MASTERING ROOM WHERE THE MASTERS FOR THE RECORD WERE TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE (ANALOG IS WHAT THEY CALL IT) TAPE. WHEN I TOURED CAPITOL RECORDS IN L.A. MANY (MANY) YEARS AGO I WAS TAKEN TO THE MASTERING ROOM AND SAW EXACTLY HOW THEY DID IT.
I have been looking for this particular song and album for a long time! This whole album was the s--t! Bobby was way ahead of his time when he recorded this ! I was just a lil snotnose kid during that time but i never forgot it! And, i don't care what anyone says, there's nothin' like the snap, crackle, pop of vinyl and if u know what i'm talking about, you know the digitally remastered holds nooo comparison! Keep the CD i just want the album.
JUST AS A FOLLOW UP. IF THIS CD AT AMAZON IS JUST STARTING AT $46.00 (THE LOWEST PRICE) , THEN THAT SHOULD GIVE SOME CLUE AS TO WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF THIS RECORD 40 YEARS AFTER IT'S RELEASE. THERE AREN'T THAT MANY CDS OUT THERE THAT GO FOR THAT KIND OF MONEY ON A RELEASE THAT SOLD A LOT OF COPIES OVER A SERIES OF YEARS., THIS IS NOT SOME SORT OF CULT RELEASE WHERE 500 WERE PRESSED. IT SOLD TENS OF THOUSANDS AND PROBABLY AN AWFULLY LOT MORE THAN THAT BEFORE BEING YANKED BY CAPITOL RECORDS.
I JUST RECEIVED A REPLY TO A COMMENT LEFT SEVERAL DAYS BACK WHERE I CLAIMED THAT THIS SONG 2+2=? HAS NOT BEEN ALLOWED OUT OF THE CAPITOL VAULTS FOR ANY REASON. I STATED THAT CAPITOL RECORDS HAS REFUSED TO REISSUE THIS RECORD AND ON TOP OF THAT, THIS CUT HAS NOT BEEN ALLOWED TO BE ON ANY COMPILATION OR ANY OTHER CD IN THE WORLD. THIS IS JUST A FACT. I RECEIVED A RESPONSE THAT I WAS WRONG, THAT AMAZON HAS THEM. WELL, YES BEGINNING AT ABOUT $46.00. THESE $46 AND UP CDs ARE FROM YEARS BACK.
You are all idiots for talking about gaga when you should ber talking about the political ramifacations of the vietnam war and an entire generation of kids who rose above it and MADE the gov. change the rules.
A few comments. First, I believe that this is far and away the best anti vietnam war song ever made and I've heard them all. I don't think there's even a second place compared to this. When I heard 2+2=? the first time I was literally blown away. It is as powerful today as on the day it was issued. Now, for some interesting "stuff". Capitol records refuses to this day to re-release this LP/CD. Not only that, they refuse to allow 2+2=? to appear on any CD whatsoever anywhere in the world.
@2devildogsmom . Right on. After ?Rambling , Gambling, and this they went COMMERCIAL . When a band is sponsored by an Fortune 500 Beer company you know it sucks.
If you want to get Bob's attention, bring it up to Kid Rock and he'll get some attention by covering some of the early stuff. I think Bob knows but he just is so proud of his later work that he forgets his early stuff that really no one besides the midwest knew about. I have been collecting it since I discovered his real early stuff. I'll bet nobody knew he put out an acoustic album back in the day.
If younger people want to know about the turmoil of 1960's USA, listen to this song. Seger was in the middle of it, war, race riots, protests, assasinations. I wouldn't want to relive those years. No thanks.
I often wonder, why music is not as outraged at what is going on as it used to be. What is with the poptards wearing "meat" dresses, or refusing to speak of things other than blatant sex or that it's ok to be a cop killer. WTF happened? Politico used to be the best place to write an angry song about, opening eyes, or allow those to make a choice. There's no soul in music anymore, Zepplica911. Thank you for the reminder. I'm glad I was raised in Motown, where I'll remember all of it.
I grew up not really liking most of his music, but I just recently found out about his earlier stuff, I love it, this and Lucifer are my tops...thumbs up for Real Good Music!
This song is sick! Seger gave me a glimpse of the frustration all the young peoples had during that turbulent time and he did it in two minutes and fifty seconds - that's what we need more of nowadays. No one is talking about what's real anymore, and it's because it's easier to get lost in the "noise." Check this stat, the average person reads "ONE" book over the span of their lifetime after graduating or leaving college.. . . and here I am writing about needing more "voices"
You know, this tune makes a great segue with "Shapes of Things" to come by the Yardbirds. Some subject matter --- war, violence, devastion. The main difference lies in the fact that Segar rolls out a story song about a specific character while the Y'Birds have a broader, global view.
One of my favorite early Bob Seger songs - not only because of the music, but because of the lyrics, which were meant to make you think. Thanks for the post.
This video suggests that things were once plain and simple, but war has complicated man's way of life; simple things like the sanctity of life cannot be understood anymore, thus, a simple equation, 2+2, does not add up "=?"
Does anyone know the source of this? It's the mono version without the irritating panning on the drums in the stereo one, I'd love to have a high quality copy of it!!
@NonRider .... I feel you my friend ... But take in consideration that the great Seeg got some following even in a small city in Saudi Arabia where mainstream , evil man music , Gaga's-driven sound is the trend , yet there is still hope for our generation (I'm 27) to understand the greatness of 50s , 60s and 70s when music was from the soul ..
@RPM1978 gaga, britney, all the little hoolywood types is the evidence of the dumming down of america. no one would know art or artistry if it slapped them in the face with a cold fish.
wow thanks for posting this. It occurs to me that the outrage of the 60's, that stopped a war and gave birth to the civil rights movement was due in large to the great artist, the likes of seger, dylan, guthrie. We've lost A LOT.
due in large to artists?? are you crazy or just plain exaggerating?
there were a lot of people doing all kinds of things to change the situation and the system. CIvil rights movements, leaders, followers, underground political parties, people like angela davis, huey newon etc.. But never, i mean never underestimate the people at large, the suffering citizens fighting for their rights. DOnt idolize artists so much that you even give them all the props for such a big change made by many
@charlyblues i guess we will just have to disagree on this.............see you at the next Afghan, Pakistan,Irag,Libya,Palestinian, Yemen, food stamp protest. Lots of those going on lately, right?
you dont understand what I said. I said you gave too much vredit to the musician, by stating that the change was due un large by the artist, while im my opinion they did their prt and spoke openly and sang openly about what's wrong with the world, but it was due largely to the public and parties who fought and demonstrated and organised rallies and did whatever they had to do.
About not having that nowadays i agree with you a hundred percent! The fight is lacking.
Thank you for posting this song and at a good sound, too. Bob Segar's music bores me to death except for about 5 songs. This song easily leads the pack.
The riff at the begining sounds like it was ripped off by Jack White for 7 nations Army. Great protest song from a great rocker. I wish people could hear this stuff instead of Like a Rock, maybe he'd get more cred. Then he'd probably have less money though.
you would know that Bob's first hit was "East Side Story" in 1966...it went to number 1 in Detroit. Followed By "Lucifer" in 1967...and then "Ramblin Gamblin Man" in 1968.

wow thanks for posting this. It occurs to me that the outrage of the 60's, that stopped a war and gave birth to the civil rights movement was due in large to the great artist, the likes of seger, dylan, guthrie. We've lost A LOT.

@anolmec
due in large to artists?? are you crazy or just plain exaggerating?
there were a lot of people doing all kinds of things to change the situation and the system.

@anolmec
you dont understand what I said.

2 + 2 = 4 and Bob + Seger = old.
Saw him in a concert and he's lost what his voice used to be. He might have been sick or something though.

Well not exactly.
If you lived in detroit in 1965-1966...
you would know that Bob's first hit was "East Side Story" in 1966...it went to number 1 in Detroit. Followed By "Lucifer" in 1967...and then "Ramblin Gamblin Man" in 1968.

East Side Story has always been my favorite.

@PeterCRissKISSgod Where can I get a copy of this? I was born and raised in Detroit, and would really like to get a hold of his early stuff

What memories? I had this album. That was a huge hit around Detroit at that time: CKLW and WKRN.
