nahhh.....its cool.....some things that shouldn't work just do......bit like the bee gees.... 3 white blokes ,squeeky voices....it shouldn't have worked but it did .....altogether now NIGHT FEVER NIGHT FEVER .....SHABBBBBBAAAAAAAA
@farriss I love it too!!! I remember when it came out, about 20 years ago, when I lived in Holland. I just heard the Beatles version for the first time the other day. To think. And I'm a pretty big Beatles fan.
Scritti Politti R&B!?!?! COOL! I do not care for the song, but I LOVE his voice. "Shabba" (the black singer here, whom ever he is), sounds like the Toad from PaRappa the Rapper video game. NEAT!
though I'm a very huge Scritti fan, tbh this type of music and the costumes don't float my boat - however, the lyrics are undeniably sweet, about a really sweet loving woman, & Greens voice is very sweet too and that's what's usually so great and special about Scritti for me- all the sweetness to it
even if you dont like this kind of music, greens soothing vocals just makes it,i gotta move my feet and nod my head in time to the music, lol at 1.44 looks like a young robbie williams, dunno tho
They ruined one of the greatest rock songs by one of the greatest rock bands ever! This song was originally by the Beatles in 1964, for those of you not familiar with it. I'm sorry, but this band killed it!
Well, jtm, y'all locked it in a glass case to protect it from being "ruined." It suffocated to death because art and popular culture need to move about freely to live on. So here ya go!
Oh, it was all so wrong even back when. Green really lost the plot for sometime after and during Provision "And then he goes and spoils it all..." Oh Patti was great but the next few years all the way up to Anomie was a wasteland (due in part to shit like this). Thank god he's back to what he does best.
Green is a genius - his voice is sometimes too sweet to handle but musically Scritti was always superb. Shabba Ranks is in the background plus Ian C. Marsh of Human League/BEF/Heaven 17 fame did the programming...
Love Green Gartside, I don't usually like cover versions but this one isn't that bad. This is one of two collaborations with Shabba Ranks. The other was Take Me In Your Arms And Love Me.
I think it just needs a remix. Right now, there's just too many "gimmicky sounds" going on, which are killing the actual groove. Prince's "Kiss" does this same "something hip over a 12-bar blues" pattern, but he got the pocket right! Scritti should have just left this at it's original speed (I'm betting it was slower), and layed his vocal and musical ideas over the typical Shabba Ranks groove. It would have worked, because everyone expects Green to be musical, and for Shabba to be Shabba.
Yeah, my problem with this is the same one I have with a lot of these "for sophistikats" funk tunes :-) If you're going to be this "outside-the-box" with the funk, you gotta put a "4-on-the-floor" (i.e. house) kick drum pattern under everything. If not, the audience ends up having to really be into jazz, in order to appreciate what you're doing :-) That's not usually the case with people who go to dance clubs, so.....
Thanks for this ftwelve12 Your comment is how sweet. But we tend to bubble with it init. Post that sweet one about the boy and the girl......shweet yep shweet....tisss tisi tis tis tis tis
Definately one of the more unusual Beatles covers I've heard. I don't think I would have believed a dance remix was possible if I hadn't heard this first. Even though my first instinct is to say that John Lennon is probably rolling over in his grave, I can't help but like this one a little.
I used to play this song on my radio show until listeners complained about some hateful remarks Shabba made on a talk show in England... I admit I have a hard time listening to this song after that...
I remember when this single was promoted on CBBC. Andy Crane or some other presenter interviewed him in the broom cupboard, Green was polite with the innane questions he asked-as I had a HUGE crush on Green I really wished I'd kept it on tape now....argggggh!
Green should "give up on his love for hip-hop??" Dude... have you ever asked a leopard to start procreating minus the spots? Not gonna happen, is it? Leopards have spots. Green has soul. End of story. Ever listened to "Cupid & Psyche?" Hello? Soul!
Totally disagree with the comment that this sounds dated. On the contrary I think it sounds fresh - probably because Green was not attempting to imitate a ragga dancehall production. This sounds like nothing else - one of the best Beatles covers. Agree with clarebw - follow-up 'Take me in your Arms' was better still.
Anything by Scritti is brilliant. When this came out it was spot on, But I must admit it sounds a bit dated. Sure wish Green would give up on his love for hip hop & Rap it sucks. But Green's lyrics are great "MY GIRL DONT GIVE BOYS THE EYE". Shabba turned out to be a homophobe shame.
Sorry I have to strongly disagree. Everything on A&B is much, much better. Force yourself to listen on A&B a couple of times and it will be better and better.

An interesting version of McCartney's sexist masterpiece; the inclusion of talentless homophobe Shabba Ranks makes it teeter on the brink of satire.

I adore Scritti Politti but this is likely a novetly record. Especially the awkward Welsh man trying to "bust some cool moves".
I'm off to remember Green the way he should be, with "Absolute", "Wood Beez" etc.

I agree A&B takes a lot of listens to "get it" in the way all of us eventually or instantly "got" classic Scritti.
However, slight as this song is, it has all the bippity bop, peaches and cream, and motoguzzi that makes Scritti great.
