Dr. Phil is really annoying me here. I don't have an ED but the way this is presented just seems more exploitive than potentially helpful. Then again I already know that he's an opportunistic jerk and the guests here are really suffering from something that requires long term care, not fifty minutes of being gawked at by an audience.
I am with Dr. Phil on almost everything, but I never get why he tries to talk logic to addicts or anorexics. Neither are in a logical state of mind. I read a study that said 28% of their anorexic subjects had some form of autism. also that the disease is not loss of appetite, but addiction to the chemicals of starving, usually following signif. weight loss. Wild.
Parental love is supposed to be unconditional, but in real life it so seldom is. And then we have to deal with the consequences for the rest of our life.

I don't know when this was aired, but I would be amazed if she's still alive. What she feels is so true, and I never had anywhere near as serious an ED as her, but that's how I was starting to feel: the ED was in my head and I never once thought I was thin, or emaciated. My mind was completely detached from my actual body.

I've encountered a book of a psychologist who, when a man is depressed and "just waiting to die" asks "Well, why don't you commit suicide then?", and then works on from the answer they give, kind of reminds them of what's important to them, what's their goal, what they are prepared to suffer for. It can be a relative who needs them, unfinished research, religion - anything. I wonder if it could work for persuading someone to get treatment for anorexia.
He's not telling her to just snap out of the disorder and be fine again. He's trying to take the first step by getting her to realize that she does need help, or her sister is going to bury her. Yes, it's very harsh, but do you really think in ten years her own family hasn't tried to coddle her through it already? Speaking as someone recovering from a similar disease, this is what she needs, even if it looks and sounds brutal. She needs to be shaken out of the world she built for herself.

@jackie287 your body can break down fat, muscle, and organ tissue (the latter being the primary fuel for an anorexic) for energy. I believe its called ketoacidosis but not positive.
@181lollipop the idea is just to get her to go to treatment, sometimes betering urself for the sake of urself isnt enough for ppl to make the changes you need to make. Once she actually starts treatment tht will become clear.

ok here's a couple of questions for ya.....Why is it almost always the female gender that suffers eating disorders? And, why do females suffer body dysmorphia, plus other appearance based dysfunctions? My opinion, is pressure from many men and the media.

I feel like Dr. Phil speeks in the same way to every visitor in his show, and that's the way my mum spoke to me when I was 3 years old, and did something I shouldn't have. He's not making good relations to his guest; I would probably left the show if I was spoken to like that.

@jackie287 when you're anorexic, it's much more important to lose the weight than to fuel your body. in fact, according to an anorexic, doing such a vigorous exercise actually energizes you as opposed to making you feel weaker. it's a contradiction, i know. but this is a very terrible and very confusing mental illness.

@jackie287 your body can break down fat, muscle, and organ tissue (the latter being the primary fuel for an anorexic) for energy. I believe its called ketoacidosis but not positive.

I am not in ANY way stating this is good or near acceptable, But the anorexic one looks about 15 yrs younger "face" wise than her sister. Heck I'm 19 and my face looks older than hers!
