its amazing how Captain McVay was court martialed for the sinking of his ship, its not like he woke up one morning and said " yup im gonna let the japs sink my ship and have over 800 of my men die from the explosion, dehydration, or sharks. hmm i wonder if its muffin time yet."
The Japanese sub captain, Mochitsura Hashimoto, told the court-martial zig-zagging wouldn't have made any difference and that his own Navy would never have put the captain of a ship on trial like the U.S. was doing to McVay, a brave thing to say by a Japanese officer at the end of WWII. He risked a backlash to make that statement. I'm impressed by his active participation in getting McVay vindicated decades later. He was an honorable officer.
My dad was on the sister ship PORTLAND. Did you know The ROLLING P as she was called ROLLED more than she pitched. The INDIANPOLIS pitched more than she rolled.. There is a model in plastic for the Indianapolis but none YET for the PORTLAND. Such aloos of so many BRAVE MEN. David
this ship was bring the atomic bomb to japan .... bad that it wasnt sunk with this bombs ... there was dieing more childs and womans like this submarine killed soldiers ....... and it was war .... the brother of my grandfather was sunk with his torpedo boat in the irish sea 194 (im german) and every war is a tragedy for all... the familys and the soldiers ...
Did you know that it took the US Navy about 5 days that the USS Indianapolis was missing and that the survivors were found by a patrolling US Navy aircraft. Of the 1300 men on board, 800 went into the water alive but only 317 were saved due to shark attacks and dehydration.
So I've heard, it was partly because communictaions were all messed up owing to bad weather and other factors, including reports the Indianapolis did reach Leyte on time, also the Indianapolis did send out an SOS three times all of which were recieved and ignored. The first was ignored because the radio man was drunk, the second was passed along but the officer in charge didn't want to be disturbed (exactally what he was doing is unknown) and the third was written off as a prank
@snakes3425 actually you are partly rigth because i had to do a report on U.S.S. Indianapolis and because om a history junkie but three did go out but only one was recifed but it could have been afored if there was an destroyer esscourt that is what the captin had asked for but was dined and went alone in japenes submarines in the water and knowing of this thats why it took so long for them to be rescued
@snakes3425 actually you are partly rigth because i had to do a report on U.S.S. @snakes3425 That is only part of the story. In my opinion, the USS Indianapolis was a suicide mission, and the President knew it. The REAL reason why nobody answered the call, was because it was delivering the Little Boy bomb to a US Base somewhere in the islands. The president KNEW that they would be sunk. It was just a con, taking innocent lives just to cover up a secret mission. RIP to the men on the USS Indianapolis.
Actually the Indianpolis had finsihed her secret mission when the I-58 attacked. Her cargo (the A-Bomb parts) and where she was going to deliver them was secret, but it was well known she was due to arrive in Leyte for training excercises to prepare for Operation: Downfall. The sinking itself was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and Capt. McVay letting his guard down by failing to zigzag since the Imperial Navy was a shell of it's pre-war self in July 1945
@snakes3425 That is true. However, I still feel that the president knew they would be sunk. Then they start blaming the poor captain? Thats just wrong. Either way, thanks for posting this, I love your videos. Im also into ships like the Indianapolis, Bismarck, and many other warships. If you ever do another Lost Ships video, maybe you can do the S.S Mont-Blanc, the ship that blew up and killed 2000 people. Just a suggestion.
Capt. McVey was blamed because the war had just ended and the Navy didn't want a public relations disaster, so McVey as Indy's captain was blamed, even I-58's captain said at the trial that zigzaging would've made no diference and sadly families of the victims hounded McVey to the point that he comitted suicide. As for the men who ignored Indy's SOS, it's unknown what became of them but they were the ones who should've been court-martialed
In terms of his court martial he didn't get a fair trial because the Navy was more interested in avoiding a public relations disaster over the communications break down and shifted all blame to him, the convictions were overturned but he was never exonerated for the sinking until 2000, the families of those who died hounded him for the rest of his life with death threats and harrising phone calls, eventually with the death of his wife it was too much, and he shot himself
I hope before the end of time this ship is found. It delivered the weapon that won the war and saved lots of lives that would have been lost in the invasion of Japan
One of my goals is to try and write a book about the Indianapolis's career from her construction to her loss and the stories of the men who served on her during her career
@snakes3425 Thank you for posting this. I know of a lot of people at my school who read about WWII a lot, along with myself, and very few of them have heard of the Indianapolis's disaster.
My guess is part of the reason is that becuase the Indianapolis disaster was over shadowed by the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the end of the war a few days later
i justed watched the Pacific Tragedy: U.S.S. Indianapolis story on the discovey channel last night. it was a verry touching story not made up by media or anything but was told by the survivors. And the funny thing is my son (in high school) came home today and they are doing reports on the issue. what troubled me was the fact the teacher was teaching the students a lie rather than the truth. schools need to know the facts and update their books.
Wasnt it this ship where the captina was blamed and was brought to a military court ? - he later did suicide - the crew was attakced and eaten by sharks while they was waiting for help ?
what a sad and shamefull story to blame the poor captain..
Yes, Capt. McVay was hounded for the rest of his life by families of the men who died who blamed him for the Indy's loss. He was exonerated of blame for the sinking in 2000
wonderful video and tribute. one of the worst American loss of WWII. second only to the destruction of the Arizona. and they were so close to going home too. just a couple of weeks to go. Hope they find it soon so that the survivers can pay their final respects for those who were lost.

God Bless her. God bless you Snakes. O and by the way this was a top secret mission to carry the atomic bomb to iwo jima so she was told to have total radio silence after the mission was completed they were heading home when a damn submarine shot a torpedo which killed the ship
everyone thinks the indy was carrying the atomic bomb because of jaws but the fact is it was carrying urainuim projectile rings for the bomb yes it was to secret but top secret or not it should have had a destroyer escort as was why captain mcvay should never have taken any blame what so ever
the real tragedy here is that she has never been found. the USS Indianapolis has never been found. How? i have no clue but it is not possible that a ship just rots away after 64 years underwater if that were true the Titanic would be gone the Hood and Bismarck would also be gone but they are still down there.
It's mostly due to the depth of water, the Phillipine Sea varies from 19,700 feet to 34,578 feet deep and is covered with trenches and seamounts (some of which are volcanic)
MCVAY ask for an escort and was denied one, the indianapolis was not equiped with u boat detection devise such as sonar etc,so he did the zig zag evase manuver, the jap u boat comander would later say in court it' would not have helped.
USS Indianpolis was on the way back from a secret mission. Delivering the Atomic bombs to the airbase so the B-29's could reach Japan with them.. Imagine if she had been sunk on her way there? WWII would have gone on until the bombs could be replaced.. Not an easy thing at the time.
it wasnt carrying the bombs it was carrying bomb parts the bombs where built at the airbase as having nuclear bombs on the ship would have been a disaster waiting to happen the parts where urainuim projectile rings but why no escort destroyer was sent was madness as cruisers where always ment to be escorted by destroyers but many times on my grandas ship they had no escorts as most of force k was sunk in the siege of malta
Thanks for the info.... Good to know that. It was pretty stupid to not escort the ship... mabye they thought a lone ship would attract less attention... who knows.

There was an attempt to find it about a year or so ago. They were gonna send an unmanned sub down to try and locate it.
The trip cost about a million dollars. But they ran out of money before they could find it, they may try again.

I don't know for sure if it was this Cruiser or an other Cruiser. Does anybody know with Cruiser this was?

The cruiser in this video is the one you were thinking of.

Another fine performance. Nice touch that you included scenes relating to before and after the sinking. All in all a very commendable effort.
