30 TB is not that much when ur a data adicted and want to save just everything you enjoy even if you never gonna see it again. Anyways, this is a nice and easy way to storage, but I think it is TOO slow... I hather have one external case for HDs and SSDs if you don't have room in you case and plug in as much raid controlers as you can, in his case I think he can plug like 3 raid cards, like 24 HDs at crazy speeds, not easy as Synology's, but WAY faster and cheaper =)

I just bought a Drobo FS and found it to be appalling(ly) slow, 20mb/s. I'm thinking of buying a 1511+ and came across your review and found it enlightening to see that you were getting 70mb/s, even 40mb/s which would suit my backups fine. It normally takes around 8 hours to backup 1.8TB hdd > hdd but going from hdd > drobo fs took 1 day 9 hours!! I hope the 1511+ won't let me down. What switch/router are you using?

The D-sub connectpor at the back is actually a VGA port, not serial as mentioned in the video.

You can use it to access the terminal directly without having to SSH into the box.

@mathspays that's um, bad. I get more than that on my DS209. Is the router and PC that you're using both gigabit equipped? If it's not, there's your problem. 100Mbit connection will give you ~10MB/sec, which is what I assume you're using.

The guy has his own business from his house. I doubt all of that space is going to be used for pleasure. Yeah he has 1 or 2 very expensive computers, but it just so happens that his business also has to do with computers so he can justify that type of expense since its going to be used to improve his income. If you start a company from your home, perhaps you will be able to justify buying such equipment.

I'm using a similar 48 slot NAS with 2TB hdd's ( 96 ) Total. Gave it its own internet line so I can upload/download from anywhere. Have an app on my iPad so I can watch all my movies from it. Kinda like my iPad has 96Tb Storage instead of just 64Gb :-P

To anyone saying he will never need that much...note that hes already used 16TB. The folder labelled documentaries and TV series, if they are in all HD should be a good indicator of the kind of stuff hes storing. HD and blu ray quality videos take up a lot of space. A single blu ray image file can be up to 30-40 gigs. And thats for one movie. Of course you dont need to rip full blu ray images but its just an example.
