I had tasted natto, just plain natto, a very small amount, a couple of years ago. It wasn't as bad as I was afraid it might be, but I wouldn't call it good. This was at a Japanese restaurant.
I finally found where I can buy some, and ate it for the first time today with long grain white rice. It wasn't so bad, once I added extra rice. The mustard pack, a bit of soy sauce, and like I said, about thre times as much rice as natto.
I'm going to try it with ramen and vegetables this Saturday.
I'm planning on coming to Japan as an english teacher after I finish school. Do you think it'll be easy to transition from English teacher to a translation job that will let me renew my work visa?
How easy it is depends on you. Generally speaking, it is easier to find a job once you've been here for a while and developed a network of acquaintances. While here as a teacher, get out, meet people, make it a point to develop contacts with prospective employers, and do your best to show people what you can do. Maintain a good, positive attitude and an open mind and there is virtually no limit on how far you can possibly go.
Oh my god - thank you! I can now eat natto! I tried natto a couple of years ago and thought it was gross, but having tried your natto soup idea I can now enjoy a winter full of beany goodness! :D
Ill have to try this :D I haven't had natto before but I have been wanting to try it. I saw it at the asian supermarket the other day and decided to buy it next time I went and thats what I'll do, along with some Knorr soup of course to try this recipe out.
my favourite way to eat natto is... to not eat natto! (actually i've never tried it but, if you've seen any of my videos where i try out japanese food... it never goes well.) and i'm pretty sure i'm allergic to soy unfortunately. i wonder if fermenting it would take the bad reaction i get from eating it away... if i ever get back to japan, i'm determined to try it at least once.
@MurdocLC i always get this knorr sundried tomato parmesan stuff that you ass with oil to cooked pasta and it's sooooo good. knorr is really popular here (canada) too.
Thanks for the info on Knorr. I meant to look it up, too, but never got around to it. As I said, I remember hearing Knorr commercials on the radio back in the 1960s, so it's been in the States for a long time. Knorr soups are very popular in Japan and I love them, too. Especially with a little natto!
I hope you can. As I said in past videos, even if you have a bad first impression, keep with it and natto can definitely grow on you... It probable grows IN you, too!
Ed I watched all your Natto videos. Have to say you've put me on a real Natto jag. Had natto on a hamburger today. A little messy, but good. Thanks!

Knorr?! Isn't that swedish!? I'm swedish!
*looks it up* Oh. No, they are german. Close enough, knorr is a swedish word though. Didn't know it existed outside of Scandinavia.
