hey dave is one crazy guitarist man. i took lessons from him before. he's amazing. his live stuff actually sounds a lot better and more unique than this video (i guess it's the low quality camera). you should check out his CD's too. i have his first CD back when he was really young. it was great. he is definitely one of the top guitarists, and a very inspiring one too. i just can't take it when someone is dissing him so badly just cuz he's using some hair tie muter thing.
He is not even close to one of the top guitarists. If you like his music that's cool, but any asshole that needs a muter to tap isn't a very good technician. That's the end of it.

Hey, I have experience of playing guitar to a decent level please check my channel if you don't believe me but can I just say that I live Mattias Eklundh but this guy is AMAZING too! The hair tie enables this guy to do weird harmonic things and his crazy tapping style would be a little sloppier without it but it's inevetable cos the licks are frankly insane.
Can we not just enjoy the music he creates instead of bitching about him using an open string string mute? His technique is awesome and most of the licks would sound just as good with out the aid; you simply can't be as good as he is and be sloppy.. it just stops his 'risky' taping licks that any guitarist would struggle with coming out wrong in a live situation and spoiling the listening experience for the audience. No the mute is not essential. Mattias Eklundh and Buckethead can both play all these tapping licks without the mute. All you have to do is learn how to mute with a combination of your left and right hands. After all that's one of the first things they teach you in guitar class is how to mute. No he isn't a monster guitarist, and I do know why he's using it. To stop unwanted noise from open strings ringing. It's what we all practice when we practice taping cross strings, or the tap from nowhere. What's next a guitar that plays half of the notes for you? Obviously you know nothing about this, but keep worshiping false heros if you like. I fail to see what the players you had mentioned had in common with using cheats to make playing guitar easier, but who cares half of them suck anyway.

Hammer-ons and pull offs as well as tapping are all techniques. You really think putting a band on your guitar to stop the strings from ringing is a technique? Especially when there are other guitarists who can play the same licks without using one. There is a technique for this purpose. It's called muting.

Firstly, what I said was whether or not one is a guitar virtuoso is not defined solely by a single technique. Secondly, there are many reasons he may use a squigee (or capo, for that matter - yet another cheating device in your book) - and if you bothered to watch more of his stuff you'll see many times he doesn't (and even can perform all of this with a clean tone). Thirdly, it's subjective.

I guess you think auto-tune, quantizing and speeding up recordings are all cool as well. Anything to make this easier to play right? Look it's not like I really give a shit I'm just saying if someone has to use an aid to make the virtuosic stuff easier to play it kinda stops them from being a virtuoso.
