Soundgarden, Metallica, Jane's Addiction, Bad Brains, Pixies, Primus....So many eighties bands were standing music "genre" on its head, showing its under belly. I remember seeing Metallica band members wearing GBH t-shirts and Perry Farrell singing with Ice-T at Lalapalooza. Alternative music in that day was music undressed. Soundgarden was no different: raw and on fire. Incredible to see live.
Haha. So... people got smarter, but now they got a new god and a new mistake. Overanalyzing. Skipping pieces. Trying to grasp things rationally. Thank you wikipedia and modern media for making us look at movies like directors but not giving us the raw experience and feeling to match.
Tell me kids, how many times a day do you skip those 'boring' parts in texts and songs and movies?
Pretty good song. Glad the new compilation is coming out. I have Super Unknown and Badmotorfinger. Those are both great albums. Early Soundgarden i have not heard much of.
@PearlJammer07 Ya need 4 more albums...Ultramega OK, Screaming Life/Fopp, Louder than love, and Down on the Upside...Get them ALL...Plus Cornell's solo albums, esp. Euphoria Morning...
Soundgarden used to be mysterious to me. My brother had Down on the Upside and I stole it one day and listened to it. Pure gold. i was little and it sound like just noise punk to me. I got older and into Grunge and Soundgarden listening to like their Badmotorfinger and Louder Than Love stuff and everything else. But know when I listen to Down on the Upside i cant think of it as soundgarden. We all agree it is a different sound from them and when i think of it i think of some old mysterious band.
@Rumpelstilzchen21 And we need it desperately. When I saw Pearl Jam live in November, I saw pure rock and roll and love for music. A crowd of people moved by music. We need the 90's BACK!
This album will never cease to be amazing. 1st Soundgarden album I bought.. and yes, Badmotorfinger is obviously a contender.. but this is still the best :) Flower and Beyond the wheel ;) Say no more
@KiteFlyingVespa don't get a new one cause it always does.... they always just get stolen cause A-sides is the best album ever.... especially the last 10 tracks or so...
I'm a huge Tool fan, so allow me to shed some light on this. They just have this sound that gets under people's skin and takes them for a ride they never forget. Atleast that's how it is for me.
nirvana, tool, soundgarden, pantera are all amazing bands, you guys need to listen to some alice in chains, pearl jam, mudhoney, L7, Tad, the melvins those are great bands! ohh and obviously the doors and the beatles
normally i mostly listen to bands like Metallica Megadeth and Rage Against the Machine, but lately ive been listening to Tool, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden. AND ITS AWESOME. i like being somewhat diverse with my music.
diverse??? all those bands are metal-hard rock bands, where is the diversity?? someone diverse would be anyone who listens...i dont know, soundgarden and pink floyd...
Nice trip back to the best of life..17..good herb..lots of trim and listening to this ridin up to Sebastian Inlet for good waves, gas 88-91cents a gallon.. Gone for good.
And people thumbed you down for that! Nirvana are decent, but come on, folks!
Instrumentally on all counts, the singing was better, Soundgarden experimented far further than Nirvana did and rocked a hell of a lot harder.
Anyone who thumbs you down is a complete musical moron. I know musical theory and SG kills Nirvana. Don't suck Kurt's dick because you all know it's true.
Also, Cornell was a master lyricist, far more underrated than Cobain. Influenced by Sylvia Plath.
I LOVE NIRVANA but you are right about Soundgarden experimenting more but I don't think they rocked harder from looking at NIRVANAs live shows and just the anger in his music.I don't understand why we even have to argue about this though. Why can't we all just agree that they are two awesome bands?
@JacobMohundro06 you honestly cant say that kurt cobain wouldve stil been this popular if he was still alive...and soundgarden's music was overall just better...its truth
Wow I was wondering if there is a Soundgarden/AIC/Nirvana song on youtube with no discussion about which band is the best grunge band....well went out there is none....amazing
@Depressiverroboter word!! especially on AIC vids!! there's always at least one person that's like "AIC>nirvana" or "i think AIC is way better than nirvana because..."
just fucking deliberatly!! it's like "SHUT the fuck up and listen to the music you damn whiners"
I'm not trying to start an arguement, but I cant stand the term grunge. I mean labeling music like this anything other than rock or rock and roll is pretty ridiculas.
The ones who really latched on to that term were those who had ripped jeans, Doc Martens, and plaid shirts to sell you, and record company executives with (usually shitty and derivative) CDs to sell you.
many great band's first releases contain some of their best output (until the record company gets ahold of you &demands you 'go pop' or else you'll never make it in the biz.... whatever).
case in point right here. this tune totally turned my concept, of what the "seattle grunge" scene was all about, on its head.
i mean, who else way doing anything like this at the time?
love the use of time signatures, the sonic textures (heavy in-your-face alongside with the ethereal)
well this is what the seattle sound was.. guys like these and other late 80's punk mixed with metal sounding guys like mother love bone and that sort of stuff.. but nirvana ushered in a whole new sound that a lot of the bands followed with their cd nevermind.. and from 91 on the sound changed from late 80's to a whole new sound, that is my fav sound ever =P..
i agree with you for most part, however for Soundgarden I don't think their first output was their best (don't get me wrong I still like it, but Superunknown was an incredible album). However Soundgarden is fairly unique in that their sound has never been tainted with attempts to make their music more poppy.
@JonP1961 Grunge really was a progression in itself. The kind of stuff that Nirvana was doing in basically everything except Nevermind was taking a direction far from whatever bum rock 'Grunge' conjures up in people's minds. Alice in Chains do the time signature thing as well, even Pearl Jam to an extent, not to mention that most of all of these bands were extremely melodically atypical. That's only the big four too...

haha, THANK YOU for pointing that out.
Seems like if you listen exclusively to the biggest 90s breakout bands, you're "diverse."
They're great, no doubt, but so were the Smiths, Sex Pistols, Grateful Dead, Deep Purple, Janis Joplin, David Bowie, The Band, and Concrete Blonde.
don't get caught up in the scenes, kids. that's why grunge music is even here, its the fusion of genres.

exactly, Grunge was a social movement. A way of life if you will, and Soundgarden was the sound of it, Nirvana who?
