Poverty levels in Scotland are similar to the UK as a whole. They are lower than in Ireland which unlike Scotland has low public spending and hence less quality public services.
Ireland has some of the worst poverty rates in Europe, and the only reason it has managed to up it's GDP is by becoming a tax haven, but this has not done the majority of the poor in Ireland any good at all anf the gap between rich and poor has increased. Is this the model for Scotland.
The Scottish are decent people and I am sure they will decide the issue in the referendum due for 2010.

As for North Sea Oil, keep it, it accounts for less than 1.5% of GDP, less than 2% of taxes and is becoming harder to extract with far greater overheads such as clean up costs.

Step one - the annual budget of the Scottish Parliament is around £35bn. Even including spending in the reserved areas, there is no way £58Bn is spent in Scotland a year in TOTAL, never mind as a subsidy. Plus, you cannot claim anything is 'subsidised', by only looking at the spending - to make such a claim, you must take into account both revenue AND spending. Your mathematics are almost as bad as your English.

Step 3 - where do you get the 5 "MP's" [sic] from? The lowest number of MEPs a nation can have is six - read the Treaties. Scotland would be entitled to around 13/14 with other similarly sized nations.

Amongst 25 OECD countries for which data is available, Ireland ranked third to bottom in terms of public expenditure as a share of GDP in 2005 with, above only Korea and Mexico.
Ireland also has amongst the highest poverty rates in Europe, above Scotland.

It's Nationalists who live in the fantasy world. They seem to think Scotland is Saudi Arabia, it's not. Scottish Oil provides the UK with revenues of £8.1 Billion, Scottish Taxes £36.3 Billion and Scottish spending is
£47.7 Billion.
Scottish Oil accounts for less than 1.5% of GDP and less than 2% of taxes, it's also declining and extraction/clean up costs are also set to rocket.
Nobody in England is standing in your way, have your referendum and sought out your future.

Poverty levels in Scotland are similar to the UK as a whole. They are lower than in Ireland which unlike Scotland has low public spending and hence less quality public services.
Ireland has some of the worst poverty rates in Europe, and the only reason it has managed to up it's GDP is by becoming a tax haven, but this has not done the majority of the poor in Ireland any good at all anf the gap between rich and poor has increased. Is this the model for Scotland.

The Scottish are decent people and I am sure they will decide the issue in the referendum due for 2010.
I am English and certainlt don't want to hold back the Scottish if that is what they truly feel.
As for North Sea Oil, keep it, it accounts for less than 1.5% of GDP, less than 2% of taxes and is becoming harder to extract with far greater overheads such as clean up costs.
I also predict cars may be running on alternatives to oil within a generation.
