If you don’t have an iPhone 4S, but still want to pose spoken questions to your device and let her speak out the answer, give ‘Voice Ask’ a try. The knowledge base behind it is huge (better than Siri) and the voice recognition works better with all accents. Work is going on to add integrated functionality that Siri offers, but for now, it’s a great app that knows details on the strangest of subjects. Get it at voiceask.com
I think the way Siri works is it sends your command to a remote server, interprets it and sends back the command for the iphone to execute. So it isnt using pre-programmed answers, but the artificial intelligence of a "smarter" computer.
2 Siri responds to a lot of strange and un common questions, like "who's your daddy?" or "was Steve Jobs gay?" and Siri responded with: "you are" and "I can't tell you that" respectively, and I don't think those questions were preprogramed : O
It's shit... You go to use the "Microphone option" to write a text message it doesn't even pick up what you're saying, hopefully becomes "woefully" ROFL
Siri actually works incredibly well at the moment, even though it's still a beta product. If you consider the data sets Apple is gathering from the 6-7 million 4S users on a daily basis it's inevitable that Siri will be able to understand very complex questions very soon. And the fact that all the interpretation and responding happens on Apple's side allows Siri to get smarter without the need for software updates on the user's side.
Siri at the moment is just a kind of novelty thing that u can show off or mess around with. If ur in public ur not going 2 start talking 2 ur phone as it'd b kinda wierd and every1 would hear what ur doing. If they make 1 that can read ur mind... now that'd get apple back into the markets!!!!!! B)
I've been playing around with Siri on a daily basis and I can assure you that it's no gimmick. It's ability to utilise Apple features such as the alarm clock, calculator, reminders, messaging and music player, and most importantly, safari- is actually astounding. You'll need to play with it!
Wait...I'm from Ireland and I'm getting the 4S on the 28th when it comes out! Are you saying I won't be able to use Siri at all?!?!? Not even the English voice?!?!? :(
I personally think that Siri is alright when you are either in a small environmental setting such as at home or in the car (not so much in a more social setting such as the classroom/ bar/ club), when both hands are busy, or simply just bored. Because of these reasons, I feel that Siri is a gimmick.
I actually found Siri useful, mostly for setting alarms and a few reminders. But I also realized Siri isn't on the iPhone, if u put ur phone in airplane mode. Siri is unusable without the Internet.
The problem is most people think Siri will be their main method of using the iPhone, and when this isn't the case they start saying it's just a 'gimmick'. But Siri is meant to be a 'tool' not THE tool to aid the user. One isn't gonna walk around talking to it all day, one is gonna use it for specific tasks. When looking at Siri in that context one will appreciate it and not be so quick to dismiss it.
Gimmick...I hope. I'm just getting used to touchscreens, last thing I want to do is talk at my phone. Mind you like everything I haven't got to use it, have I?
I agree with Dave that there is potential with this type of technology, but as it stands now it's a gimmick. It is more polished than Android's voice control, though not by much. I rarely use Google Voice aside from the odd text or when placing a call. When I want to set my alarm I just manually set my alarm.
Siri should be something implemented in a new robot that can do your chores for you (I'm looking at you, Apple), not so much a phone. It's a gimmick, for sure.
As well as Siri might work, I don't see myself using it once the novelty wears off. Not in public, and not by myself. Also, I think it promotes some really unhealthy behavior (treating your phone like a person).
Lastly, it's quite creepy that they gave it so much attitude/personality. It'd be okay if it had answers for some quirky questions, e.g. "what is the meaning of life," but not answers to "where can I hide a body." It just feels too much like a person (an Uncanny Valley of sorts).
@legr8est1234 Think about blind people or those with motor difficulties. This kind of tech is a god send to them, it improves their daily life and just makes things less of a chore for them. The same benefits can be gotten by people who aren't visually impaired and are fully able. It's faster and easier to speak out a message than type it, especially good when driving for example.
@TalesOfWar I understand that the blind will benefit from this technology more than others. But that's a fairly small slice of the apple.
As for the rest of the iPhone-owning world, I simply don't think this'll catch on. I've had voice commands on my GPS, and they work fairly well. However, I just don't feel comfortable talking when I'm by myself. I'd feel even more awkward if there are people around.
Only time will tell if Siri, unlike other voice command systems, will catch on. I think not.
i think siri and other voice control software will be the future but as of right now no. apple are really onto somthing here with siri if they just put in the work with it i think it will transfourm from a toy to a tool.
I think Siri is fun at the very least, to bad you live Ireland !! You can't exprance Siri , you won't get your brith if you get a chance to to use Siri.
I think they are neither. I don't think it is a gimmick because it truly is useful, but it should not be the feature that smartphones will revolve around.
I dont think it is a gimmick. It is also not the future of smart phones. It is a handy feature that all phones should have, but should not revolve around.

I have two things to say:
1 there IS Siri in Mexico (US english)
2 Siri responds to a lot of strange and un common questions, like "who's your daddy?" or "was Steve Jobs gay?" and Siri responded with: "you are" and "I can't tell you that" respectively, and I don't think those questions were preprogramed : O
