I've been working at a sewing machine for a bit, and I've had a hankering to get into making some gear for backpacking... Good inspiration. Thanks for putting it together.
my walmart doesn't carry any sil or ripstop. Do you know of another source I could get it at with reasonable prices? Thanks a lot for this video I appreciate it a ton 5*
The reason for the triangle piece of fabric is usually for when grommets/eyelets are in the fabric, for pitching with stick or poles... at least in my opinion.
If you really wanted a strain relief and reinforcement on the corners you could fold 3/4" portion of the corner in towards the middle and fasten that down then roll your side seams. It works great and you are not adding any appreciable amount of weight. (just thread weight)
i melted the edge of my hammock with a lighter because i don't have a machine it looks like shit but it keeps it from fraying!! i really want to make a tarp do you think i could hand sew one?
Yes; BUT it will take a LONG time to sew it. You will need to pay attention to your stitch width as well. Those portable hand sewing machines should do in a pinch as well and can be packed along as well for emergency repairs. IF you can find OLD packs that appear to suit your needs remove the stitches and make your own patterns. OR draw a pattern on some paper and test the design for your various bags. Making a pattern is easy, designing the pattern is the tricky part.
I sew my tie-outs in my corners as I go. Saves time and I am able to back stitch them before I turn the corner. The midway tie-outs are also sewn in this fashion.
Nice post. Very informational. Do you have any web sites to get good fabrics and also do you know of any sites that have patterns and directions for make your own gear? I want to try to make so of my own gear, but I can't find a whole lot of sites that have the fabric that I am looking for. I am alos having problems finding patterns for my gear. If you can help me just PM me your reply. Thanks again for the great videos and keep them coming.
The machine in the movie is a early 80's singer spartan. You can pick up decent machines from thrift stores etc. Make sure you get it serviced 1st though. The brothers will work fine for lighter stuff like tarps etc. I wouldn't try and sew 1000d all day with one!
Glad to see some more videos. Have been waiting for some new ones to pop up (from Idaho!). Always liked your items especially food storage, but its all good.
he man, any vids/instructions on how to join 2 pieces in a waterproof way? Thanks

Great Video, glad I stumbled across it. Now to see if I can find some Canadian stores that have sil-nylon fabric at a CHEAP price.
