  • Jamie Lannister the Greatest Knight in ol of Westeros enogh said

  • tywin is absolutely flawless.

  • Powerful scene. This wasn't in the books at all, so it testifies the skill of the HBO screenwriters to come up with it.

  • Charles Danse - What a performance!

  • the guy who did this in the book was randyll tarly. when saw told jon about what was his father`s plan if he didn`t go to the night watch, samwell describes him doing this to a stag.

  • Brilliant scene

  • why was the richest and most powerful man in westeros skinning an elk? isnt that a job for someone a bit lower down the hierarchy?

  • Tyrion was what Tywin was looking for. It wasn't Jaime . . it wasn't Cersei . . it was Tyrion all along, he was 100% Twyin 2.0 he never saw that . .

  • Tywin Lannister was noble . . . Robert and Stannis looked up to him . . that is power.

  • @AuburnDetroitTiger Im sorry what chapther in what book did you read this?

  • @alexpascu2785

If that is at his second comment, I think he's saying that because his wife died in childbirth, Tywin hated Tyrion - and because of tihs, he failed to realised that he was in fact the son that he wanted.

  • @lemansquattro Sadlly he paide for his life

  • I just realized, it's a Lannister slicing through a stag, the Baratheon sigil, symbolizing what Cersie Lannister did to Robert. And at the beginning, the mother direwolf, had been killed by a stag, how it was because of Robert that Ned ended up dead. It's funny how it's the girls who're separated from their wolves...

  • @juniperzowl Yeah, but remember that the Stag ended up dead from the Wolf as well. Robert making Ned the Hand eventually led to Ned's death, but Ned warning Cersei is what killed Robert...

  • I think it was pointless and unnecessary to include this scene, why would Tywin Lannister concern himself with the menial task of gutting an animal? Also the american 'I could care less' sounds too modern and, more importantly, doesn't make any sense. He 'couldn't' care less, that's the point. This ruined the anticipation of first seeing tywin played by Charles Danse-who is a fantastic actor.

  • Even if they killed about 25 elks for this scene, I doubt PETA would be in an uproar; They against animal cruelty, and the elk is dead at the start of the scene, most likely killed in a humane fashion.

Also, they might be against it being killed for no use, but I with the wardrobes and the pure number of actors and extras on the show, I doubt neither the skins nor the meat was just thrown away

  • It's spelled Jaime. Not Jamie.

  • Am I the only one whose appetite rises while watching this scene?

  • At 4:12 He should've said:

"Not tomorrow, not AFTER breakfast... NOW"

  • @chimpbottle You made my day, friend! Thanks for your existence :)

  • I can never watch this scene without becoming hungry...

  • And he is skinning a Stag oo the irony love this guy

  • The man reminds me of my geografi teacher badass

  • Never read the book but what a great first impression of Tywin Lannister.

  • @fishNguitars The first season does a better job of painting an impressive picture of Tywin Lannister than the book in my opinion, its just too bad he didn't have many scenes.

  • @Sandz890 SPOILER* I still don't understand why he bones Shae in book 4 that led to HUGE SPOILER* Tyrion putting a crossbow bolt up his bowels END SPOILER I mean, I know Tywin hates whores, after what he did to Tysha (although she wasn't a real whore and Tywin made Jaime lie to Tyrion) and his action was totally un-Tywin-like

  • @puenboy1 He's a hypocrite. It's not "un-Tywin-like", there are plenty of reasons that Tywin would sleep with Shae. Just because he acts a certain way doesn't mean he thinks in that way, too.

  • @puenboy1 @Drallanator DUDE!!!!! I narrowly dodged that!

Put a larger indent in your spoiler! Or use a lot of spacing!

I just read to the part of the xbow bolt... USING DOUBLE SPACING BEFORE A SPOILER... you got the ALERT part right though. So, yeah.

Well, no harm was done, but next time please use spacing. Thanks.

Though I shoulda heeded the warning up top.

  • The last battle in the song of ice and fire is Jaime vs. Hodor, wanna know who wins? the last line in the book will be "Hodor", said Hodor

  • It is known.

  • Charles Dance is the perfect Tywin Lannister. It is known.

  • I know plenty of parents have high standards for their children, but Tywin is taking that to a whole new level.

I mean, look at his son. Admired throughout the land for his swordsmanship. He's one of the King's guard, the most elite fighting force in the Seven Kingdoms. And on top of all that, pretty much everyone owes him a debt for slaying a tyrant king.

And his father's STILL niot satisfied with what he's done with his life.

What more could he possible ask for?

  • @TheJboy88 That he stops f**king his sister?

  • @TDXguy Tywin knows about that?

  • @TheJboy88

    No he doesn't know.

  • @UnionLords You think that Joanna caught the two of them fooling around and didn't tell her husband (and cousin), Tywin Lannister? Tywin Lannister knows everything that happens in Casterly Rock. He knew about Shae, so it's not above him to keep tabs on his children.

  • @TheJboy88 true

  • Tywin is such a bad ass...Considered one of the greatest mind in all of Westeros

  • With this intro scene, when you meet Tywin, you start to understand why Jaime, Cersei, and Tyrion all are who they are

  • as despicable as he is Tywin is probably the one character that i have great respect of

    the other being littlefinger

  • I can see the irony in one of the most powerful men of all the realms is forced to do the work of a lowly hunter or butcher, because he is so paranoid of assassins poisoning his food.

He most likely also cooks his own meals...

  • @vridstoft Hey, you want a job done right...

  • @vridstoft He might also just enjoy hunting. My father's a well-off business executive but on his days off he likes to get out in the forest and get down and dirty, and he doesn't have someone else skin and butcher any potential fatalities.

  • @JOHN91043353 Sure, that's a possibility as well, but Tywin strikes me as someone who only enjoys influence, power and keeping the Lannister name strong.

King Robert on the other hand enjoys his hunting

  • @vridstoft It's said in the books that Tywin is in incredibly good shape for someone his age (mid 50s or so) so maybe he does enjoy physical activities.

  • @ShadowSonic2 It's certainly a possibility, and one that lends strenght to the character.

But Tywim sounds like a man who plans for ANY eventuality and try to be two steps ahead of his opponents.

Thus skinning your own kills is an excellent (and manly) way of preventing a poisoning attempt.

  • @vridstoft i think it's more like this: he was hunting, and wanted to skin his own kill, instead of letting someone else do it.

  • A Lannister always ..pays ..his debts!

  • Tywin is really coming across as a really mean-spirited old man. Brilliant casting.

  • Only one but...Tywin is supposed to be bald.

  • @Ishmala91 i know i really cant see why they never shaved his head

  • I USE TO BE EVIL LIKE YOU TILL I TOOK A QUARREL TO THE GUT!

  • @veldross1 Well spotted!

  • @veldross1 foreshadowing is not irony.

  • @BEARCRAB

Too bad thats not foreshadowing. Learn to literature. Foreshadowing is a conscious effort by the director/writer to give an inkling of what is about to come. A storm, a tense room, etc. Tywin skinning a stag can in no way be taken to mean "Oh hes going to kill Robert!"

If it was foreshadowing the Stag would've been walked out from a pen with 'Rob' written on it as its name. The fact that this can only be gleaned from hindsight makes it ironic.

Like I said, learn to literature.

  • Comment removed

  • @veldross1 Secondly, I'm afraid that even if we were in some bizarro universe where this was not foreshadowing, it would still not be irony. So you don't really have any grounds to on which you can attempt to correct me on the proper usage of such terms. Thirdly, why are you so fucking defensive and weird lmao

  • @BEARCRAB

Wow you are so wrong on this. I'm not defensive, just appalled at the stupidity of youtube viewers is all.

    Its irony.

  • @veldross1 good rebuttal. "you are wrong." sorry mate but you gotta face the facts and maybe look up all the different kinds of irony at some point and observe how none of them are applicable.

  • @veldross1 I see your point but you are using the word wrong - it's not irony, it's just regular symbolism. Irony refers to only a certain kind of symbolism: that of the opposite. If Robert was going to kill Tywin then it would be ironic.

  • @MadPutz let me mark this day somewhere, an intelligent comment on youtube

  • @veldross1 Not Irony... metaphor. ;)

  • @veldross1 not irony, symbolism

  • @veldross1 Did you notice in the first episode a STAG kills a DIREWOLF with its antler.

  • mad bacteria son

  • The casting on this show is just fantastic- it makes me glad I watched the series before I read the books!

  • Why now I'm starving for some venison meat?

  • Where's the Purell when you need it? @4:10

  • @heverchild HE didn't wash his hands properly. LUL!

  • that fear in jaime's eyes 2:36 emphasizes how powerful Tywin is. Fantastic actors.

  • One of the best scenes of the series. And this wasn't even in the book.

  • that's what I call amazing acting...

  • See the symbolism of him gutting a stag? I love this scene.

  • did they teach him how to gut and prepare the deer?

  • I hope all the lannisters die at the end! especially jaime and joffrey!!!!!!!!!

  • @Kwstasffcladose HEAR ME ROAR! Grr!

  • @Kwstasffcladose haha..u didn't read the story. what's wrong with jaime? he's awesome

  • @emperor1994 hes porking his sister.

  • @emperor1994 i haven't read the book so i don't know how is his character there! but as i have seen from the series jaime is one of the most hated chracters in my opinion...i don't think trying to kill a 10 year old kid is the best action...

  • @Kwstasffcladose Bullshit , Jaime is the best character for me , besides trying to kill a 10 year old child is nothing infront of the shit which is coming next in the story ..

  • His name is Jaime not Jamie

  • "Please don't spoil anything" in the lower corner FTW. Kudos to this close knit network of fans who really share enthusiasm and a code of plot silence Varys' network spies cannot penetrate. Just so!

  • Such a man.

  • Who knew Tywin Lannister was an MP in Ali G Indahouse?

  • Comment removed

  • Sooner or later GRRM will have to show the real consequences of universal betrayal. Bolton and Frey don't trust each other nor the Lannisters, basically no alliance is real, and the way that the Starks represented is gone - but universal betrayal screws everyone in the end. When a leader who is like Robert WAS shows up, unity will occur again. And loyalty will mean something.

  • @ravenouscolonelhart Indeed , in fact back when Bolton and the rest of the North Lords were holed up in Winterfell it was clear the hatred , scorn and resentment between the northmen and the Freys. And hell I fucking hate the Freys too , at least Tywin Lannister is a cool character XD

  • @ravenouscolonelhart

Robert was an incompetent ruler, he bankrupted the realm and was an emotional coward who condoned the murders of two innocent children.

  • I love how he skins a stag, the symbol of the Baratheon house. Such a brilliant metaphor.

  • favorite scene in the series

  • Tywin is a BOSS!

  • Tywin has some really good points, i think that is why the Lannisters are on top.

  • the butchering was a nice touch :)

  • Oh please read the book, people. Its not a secret...

  • Hahaha, people should not even come to this video page anymore. Almost every comment on the first page have spoilers all over!

  • Tywin has the best lines.

  • Look at him skin that thing... he's a pro!

  • A lion doesn't concern himself with the opinions of a sheep.

Comparing Tywin to Jaime. Tywin is the lion while Jaime is still a cub.

  • This conversation never happens in the books.

  • I want APRIL, not next year, not tomorrow, NOW!

  • The irony is that Tyrion has the qualities Tywin doesn't see in Jaime. Shrewdness, cleverness, military strategy, and an ability to turn things to his favor. Tywin is just too blinded by The fact that Tyrion is a dwarf that he misses it.

  • @ThanatorRider Tywin probably wishes he could put Tyrion's mind in Jaime's body. Then he'd have the son he always wanted. Instead he's got a brilliant and clever son who's a dwarf and a handsome warrior son who's also reckless, irresponsible and doesn't take anything serious.

Too bad gene splicing doesn't exist in Westeros. Hey, maybe Qyburn could cook up something.,,

  • Comment removed

  • Honestly, Tywin Lannister gutting and skinning an animal as he lectures Jaime about strategy is one of the greatest character introductions I've ever seen on TV. Probably tied with Spike's introduction on "Buffy" in terms of impact and encapsulating the character.

  • Comment removed

  • @sugarandspice4815 They actually mentioned that every time they had to re-do this scene, he had to re-gut and re-skin a new elk every single time, and that every one of them was a real one. They said he did it without any complaints or objections, just did it every single time and that it took about 25 takes I think.

He is a pro at acting.

  • @genesisSOC Christfuck. What did they do with all those dead elk?

  • @Cerberusballs Where do you think all the rest of the meat and guts and gore came from for the rest of the show? ;)

  • @genesisSOC OK, second question? Where was PETA when all this shit was going down?

  • @Cerberusballs Even PETA appreciates the awesomeness of Game of Thrones. Besides, they're half a kingdom in debt to Tywin anyway.

  • @genesisSOC Respect

  • @genesisSOC Thats not true. It is actually the same stag that he looked like he was skinning over and over again. At around 0:36 you can see the flap of fur on the front leg of the stag shimmering as he cuts the back end. This is because it was relaid over the joins before each take. Doesn't make CD any less of a good actor.

  • @genesisSOC I thought no animals were harmed in the amking of this film...

...but then again the actors need to eat, so I suppose this takes care of two birds with one stone. Tywin can act and cook for the cast at the same time! :D

But friend, how did you find out that part?

  • @genesisSOC

So they killed 25 elks for this scene? xD

  • @sugarandspice4815 also it is a stag he is skinning. #amazingsymbolix

  • @sugarandspice4815 and it is great symbolism that it is a stag

  • Charles Dance is perfect for the role

  • shouldnt Tywin be bald?

  • My only issue with this scene?

He'd have gutted the elk in the woods, before dragging it off to be skinned/chopped.

And that's really not an issue, as it adds such a visceral ambiance to the scene. Suspension of disbelief is easily held.. in fact, it makes this exponentially better.

Charles Dance, the actor playing Tywin?

Nailed it. Nailed it to a oak's trunk and MADE the tree love it.

  • Charles Dance absoloutely NAILS his role, as does the guy who plays Jaime

  • @cocaineuk87 They all nail it

  • this scene and the scene between robert and cersei in particular were awesome additions that gave me a lot of faith in the show's writers

  • did anyone else here the guy say ''we need reinforcements'' at 0:08 - 0:10

  • @boxerblackbelt

I hear it too. Maybe a friendly game of soccer is getting out of hand.

  • Tywin Lannister is such a cock but so awesome. He gets shit done, speaks sense and is so domineering. Love him

  • Comment removed

  • Tywin Lannister - the one man who can wipe that annoying smirk from Jaime's face.

  • Charles Dance is the man. So perfect for the role.

  • @kc1john The only one that could possibly be just little better would be Peter Cushing

  • God damn this is an awesome show.

  • Jon Snow: "I build my own fires!"

Tywin Lannister: "I gut my own deer!"

  • I don't really understand why people brand Tywin as evil. In my eyes he isn't evil. Not the best man in the world but hardly evil. This is a story of politics, plots, and counterplots, great battles, love and tradegy so on and so forth.

  • @negima3210 When you hear about what he did to Tyrion in Tyrion's first marriage, then you'll see why. He's a great war-leader and Lord otherwise, though.

  • @negima3210

He's not exactly eveil (not like Aeris, Joffrey or Ramsay) but he's definitely cold and heartless.

  • @ChocolateFlux the death of joanna did that.

  • @negima3210 And who's to say in politics there isnt evil? thats exactly the point. He is evil, just in different way. He doesnt seek only murder and cruelty (like Gregor Clegane seems to), but that doesnt mean he doesnt make use of it to achieve (more) power.

  • Family name lives on... so true!

  • I must say Tywin is a genius. A sly evil man but a brilliant strategist and tactician. It would have been great reading about them together with the Starks. Imagine children with a Stark and Lannister as parents. Now that would have been cool.

  • @LadyLyanna25 Why is he evil? Being ruthless is not being evil. He is a bitter and hard person because he had to bring up his family name after his father had destroyed it. In so doing he gained the suspicion of the Mad King who ONLY took Jaime as a Kingsguard to prevent Tywin from having him as a heir (which is why Jaime became bitter once he found out). Keep in mind under Tywin as Hand during the Mad Kings reign the majority of people had peace and plenty.

  • @Xantheus07 Oh so orchestrating the Red Wedding that massacred an army... is not evil. Yes we know he is bitter and hard because of his stupid father and the mad king but look at his actions. Let's define evil, shall we it is defined as morally wrong or bad; immoral or wicked. When you fight, it is honorable to fight them face to face not stab them at the back. The Frey are evil but they were dim-witted enough to have thought of the RW on their own (See FFC Jaime's POV). He is evil period.

  • @LadyLyanna25 In war people die. By orchestrating the Red Wedding he spared the lives of many of HIS bannermen, the only people he need concern himself with. Morals have nothing to do with war. Its either his family or the Stark family a easy choice to make for any one during a time of war. The Freys are not evil as well Lord Frey may be disloyal but his argument that his loyalty belongs to the King is also valid. This series is not about good vs evil in humans.

  • @Xantheus07 yes people die in war but not like that! Which makes us different in what is evil. And for Christ's sake, tell me if chopping Robb's head off then placing Grey Wind's head in it, moral? The Freys already murdered them, is adding insult to injury of desecrating his body not evil? That's f*** up & Loyal my a**. In DWD, the North loved their murdered king & yes this may not be good vs evil in the books. But because of their actions, this would entail vengeance and justice.

  • @LadyLyanna25 Does it matter how people die? So someone chopped off Robbs head and put his wolfs in its place how much does that matter to Robb? I agree what the Freys did was fucked up but they felt betrayed (which they were) so choose another side. Sure a lot of us will think Lord Frey was a petty, small, jealous man but he still had a point that he swore a oath to the realm just as well as to the Tullys. =)

  • @Xantheus07 Does it matter how people die?

    Well yeah!

And oh please if you read GOT the dirty old geezer was never loyal... that's why he was called the Late Lord Frey. Even in the battle of the Trident he showed his duplicity, he was just waiting to see who wins and sides with the winner. Pretty pathetic, in my opinion.

But hey a good Frey is a dead Frey :) I love some good pies right now.

Just a question, you did read the series right?

  • @LadyLyanna25 I have read all of them =) i love the series. I didnt say he was loyal i said his argument was valid that he swore an oath to the realm. Yeah i messed up i should of said "In war does it matter how people die?" All in all Robb did not suffer long he was not boiled in his armor or feed to a bear but he is just as dead.Robbs wolf killed people quite uncivilized as well does that make Robb evil for having his wolf with him in battle?

  • @Xantheus07 Well that's just it when you fight, you face your opponent in battle Grey Wind kills in battle. Can you say that to the Freys? Its like the Sack of Troy, everyone is appalled by what happened, that's why Robb's called a martyr and the North is clamoring for justice. Strategically speaking, Tywin could have won in the end in battle if he wanted to. But this deviousness only made more enemies instead of ending it. Still, was GRRM is a literary genius by doing so.

  • @Xantheus07 Lord Frey has no loyalties really, yes he swore to the realm but he also wanted social mobility/ascendance. That's why he wanted his daughter to marry Robb & when that didn't work, he was humiliated and wanted revenge for the offense. It's not rocket science to see the dirty old man would take the bait of the promise of political power and gain. But he fail to see the repercussions of his actions. Oh well... I hope the old guy lives long enough to see all his descendants die...

  • @LadyLyanna25 Also keep in mind if he had any say it Ned Stark would of never been killed and the war would of been avoided.

  • @Xantheus07 True, but I think you forget Joffrey was very much the Mad King 2.0. And regardless of what you think if you read SOS, even Tywin had a hard time keeping reins on Joffrey's crazy antics. A great leader but incompetent father.

  • @LadyLyanna25 Tywin was not Joffs father also if he spent as much time around Joffery as Cersi did would Joffery be what he was?

  • @Xantheus07 "Tywin was not Joffs father" Well duh.

But to your question if Tywin spent his time with Joffrey

Then maybe the mother henning and stupid spoiling would have never happened. Look at rhaegar getting fostered regardless of him being a prince. If Joffrey was fostered by Tywin, I can assure you, he wouldn't be the mad king reborn...

  • Was Nikolaj already growing his beard for next season?

  • "You going to say something clever? Go on, say something clever." I love saying this when the occasion calls for it.

  • to anyone that has read the books, does tywin know about jamie and cersei?

  • @rebharath in the books it was never revealed if he knew. they were caught "experimenting" as kids and were scolded for it. But tywin wasn;t blind

  • @rebharath i think tywin knew on some level but never admitted to himself that it was true because to him the thought of his kids doing something so ridiculous is impossible for him to comprehend, he didnt want to believe it, but as smart as he was he must have known sort of, tyrion knew afterall

  • @SWCeagles2007

after Tywin dies, Ser Kevan shows to Cersei (and later to Jaime too) that he knows of their incestuous relationship. I guess he always spared his brother however, since he idolized Tywin.

(not sure if Kevan knew his son was fucking Cersei too, I guess not, otherwise, he would have flogged him)

  • @rogerpenna i know that, i just think that tywin might have known but he convinced himself that it wasnt true because he so much didnt want to believe it

  • @rebharath No. and thats really all i can say without giving spoilers.

  • i wonder if they shot this scene multiple times. if so, how many deer did they go through?

  • I have a uni friend who belongs to the Rothschild family- his father bloody reminds me of this guy

  • @squamish4244 that's because it is

  • That deer looks awfully real.
