He's a gorgeous pup! Er.. adult now, yes. What should be banned? People bringing their matted to the skin dogs to be groomed and refusing to shave. Insisting they be brushed out. Meanwhile, their dog has a severe ear infection, UI, toe-nails embedded into their pads, and teeth held in by plaque. THAT is animal cruelty, not cropping/docking by a vet and proper aftercare.
I find all the comments too funny, one says "a Great Dane doesn't look like a Great dane without cropped ears"? ummm ok they are born with natural laying down ears, key word NATURAL and meant BY nature lol, there is NO evidence of a cropped ears to help eliminate ear infections, its called clean your dogs ears people! Cropped ears is ONLY a preferance by the owner for pure showing yourself off but it's legal still and is your choice.
@viralmouser Nature created canines with erect ears. IE wolves. MANKIND bred floppy ears into dogs. I see nothng natural about that. There is actual evidence that floppy ears are more prone to ear infections, because moisture gets trapped in them and creates the perfect grounds for bacteria and yeast infections.
Great danes had to get their ears cropped because of having to hunt deer. If they retained their floppy ears, then the bucks could rip them off with their antlers.
I like the ear crop look only on some dogs, great danes are a perfect example and the doberman. And other natural ear standing like the german shepherd dog. The pointed ear makes a nice look.
Contrary to popular belief, Great Danes are extremely prone to ear infections, and cropping allows increased ventilation to the ear canals making it an effective barrier against infection. Half of you people who vilify this poor lady are probably going to or already have circumcised their children. RIDICULOUS!
@hheess33 one second is too old! cropping is cruel and pointless. 'some' dogs required tail docking for when working due to potential snags in undergrowth and such but this is just horrific abuse ion the name of appearance.
He's incredibly cute, but I don't think we should be cropping ears and docking tail. Its unneccessary. it's like giving a child unneccessary plastic surgery. Having said that, he's obviously not bothered by it and I do love danes and I've always wanted to get one and give it a greek god name - it seems fitting somehow.
i have had danes, with both natural & cropped ears.cropping causes minimal discomfort.the dogs with cropped ears have been bred for years to have paper thin ears, & croping happens before cartilage is hard. they were/are bred this way cause they are a sporting/hunting dog & other animals would rip their ears off if they hung. there are alot of danes with natural ears, but inorder to have them hang properly (not stick out like airplane wings) they're breeding the dogs to have thicker ears.
@RavenousChinchilla Jesus... give it up already, PETA pusher. He looks like he is in SOOO much pain. All that running around, tongue rolling, tail-a-waggin'. If you want to start a debate do it somewhere else and get the fuck out of here.... just watch the video and let it be the end of it!!
when done by an experienced vet having a dogs ears cropped is harmless. the reason people started cropping dogs ears in the first place is because back when most dogs had some sort of job to do like herding or vermin control their floppy ears would get bitten and infected. now it's simply a preference
amazing pup i love how they look right after they get there ears dont they are all proped up haha cute they also look so cute with there big floppy ears adorible
haha people just need to fucking relax with the whold dog croping ears thing its called PREFRENCE its not what anyone else likes its what you like and its simply harmless to doggs did you know that baby boys are circumsised with out any pain releaver when they are little they just chop there dick and the baby boys dont feel shit just something to think about
No we believe in leaving the dog as nature intended...as someone said if you don't like the ears, get a different breed of dog!!! do you buy a new car then re-spray it? do you cut the roof off? no you don't! so why change a dogs Nature ears???
We are talking about Great Dane's not mastiffs. YOu should know that different breeds of dogs are known for having different problems. Great Danes with floppy ears are known to have ear problems, especially living in a Warm Climate like VA.
I hope you know these things before you go out and buy your dogs! People need to educate themselves before they assume responsibility with a dog!
and please, research before you make these rediculous claims. It wastes all of our times. Over in America we have to work, the government doesn't pay for everything like over in Europe... which is a good thing!
Yes, that's why I generalized and said Europe, I didn't know what country he lived in. Communism and Socialism are exact opposites. Did you really not know this?
You may need to do a little more research before you post again my friend :).
BTW Great danes were meant to have their ears cropped. It prevents infections.
@madmandrils05 i am just saying that i asked if you realized the difference between socialism and communism since you grouped them together, that for example socialism is an economical system and not a political system unlike communism. and i also did not comment on whether or not great Danes should have their ears cropped or not.
@madmandrils05 besides communism and socialism are not complete opposites, capitalism and communism are complete opposites, however since modern day communism use socialistic AND capitalistic ideas in their economic driving force, for an example take a look at China, even USA with their so called "capitalistic" economy, is not a true capitalistic economy, there are many
i just cut my great danes ears and what yall must not realize is that sometimes you have to do it...like mines ears were growing weird and we had to do it otherwise he would have grown up with infections and probably def
you have to go to your vet..they can do it. but what they do is cut off alot of their ear until it looks how they need to, then stitch them up and put bandages on the ears. but it is illegal in some states so you just need to check on it
I agree, i think floopy Dane ears are adorable! My friend has 4 danes Schroeder(4years) Rocky (almost 2) Cecelia (8 months) and now Mr. Simmons (we call him Sims
not really I think they look good with their ears clipped you sound so judgmental you need to worry about your life and your dogs and not others and try to tell them what to do that is not your job its gods. I think your dog is cool as hell he looks like one happy/curious great Dane I like his color and marking to very nice looking Pup
The reason their is no infection in Europe is because you don't have that much humidity there, and just because some people in America think that ear cropping is better for their dogs doesn't mean you should go around and call America "oldfashoned" then Greatdanelover24 is right, you have no life because you have nothing better to than argue with people about their personal preference??
What's funny about people like the above person is that instead of just having a discussion on why they feel it's cruel, they have to attack people, call them names, and show that their own IQ is no higher than a 2 year old who throws a fit. I was never rude to you Veik. But it's typical of someone who doesn't have a better come back to just say, "I'm not talking about this anymore!" Although I'm impressed that you know so much about me to know whether or not I have a life. Shame on me?
Really? Well shame on you for not being able to have an adult conversation. Too bad. Meh. Oh well. The point of the matter is, it isn't bad to crop ears. Nor is it animal abuse.
you would go to a doctor if your ear would have a infection and dont let it get worser and worser man
i can say that you have no problems with floppy ears ( i own a male great dane labrador mix) if you clean his ears sometimes (once in a month is enough by my dog) i dont think its gonna kill him when i clean his ears ^^"
Would YOU ever cut YOUR ears? Cropping is animal abusing and in nearly all Europe forbidden since many years - our dogs never died on "infections". Bad excuse, not more. Get modern and ask the animal welfare organisations, they will all say to you that cropping is not more than animal abuse. If you wanna cut something, cut your finger, but let the puppies.
Wow, anger! So much fun on the net :D Which is BS? The fact that man made floppy ears? Or that you're lucky in the fact that you haven't had to deal with a dog that's had such bad ear infections that he had to be put to sleep? Because it caused other infections and disease. Hmm.. get a life.
And he is a beautiful puppy :) I have two fawn girls. Both show dogs, one is 6 months and the other is 19 months. The 19 month just championed this past weekend :D
Lol he is, at three months, the same size as the dog we used to have, Buddy, when he was full grown! And he was not a small dog!^_^ Same pattern and everything too which is funny! He wasn't a dane, but he had what could be called a harlequin coat, though his came from his spaniel backgrounds!
well its better for working dogs because livestock and when it digs the ears will not be in the way I am an animal science major and I grew up on a farm we know more about cruelty then city folk lol
@1kickass i have always done it between 8 and 12 weeks. never after 12 weeks unless its for reconstructure of the ear. i have 4 males, all with there ears cut. and one female that doesnt have her ears cut because we rescued her.
cute pup!!! the ears thing, it does not bother me. i mean it does not cause them too much distress or pain and it does not effect them much. i just think that ears down are cuter :)
I think it depends on where you live and what vet you use. Were in phoenix the 1st vet we found wanted $750 to start. We found one in Lake Havasu they wanted $250 big difference. We went with a vet here in phoenix because there good. We did get a discount because a few other Great Danes from the litter were also getting there ears done. So instead of $750 we paid $350. I do agree it is only cosmetic. But a Great Dane does not look like a Great Dane with out it's ears cropped to me.
@Amber1a6 his was 350 for a show crop, i got a shorter crop on my brindle that was only 225. hes a great vet that i would recommend to all. i drew what i wanted his ears to look like on the inside of his ear. and he made the other ear match it.
Lol god, this is too funny. I said get a life after you attacked me in the first responses to me. The thing is, you have your opinion and I have mine. 1. It's like any surgery that people go through. I don't know any puppy that is awake during cropping. 2. I have plenty of dogs that I don't have their ears cropped. 3. Depending on where you live, having floppy ears can cause serious problems to dogs. The humidity can make them have terrible ear infections and cause early hearing loss.
(Noticed I accidentally replied to lollipinkjess, Sorry about that. These are to Veikyuubichan.)
Now, until you come at me with more than "YOU'RE MEAN! STOP DOING THAT TO YOUR DOGS!" I will continue to doubt your intelligence. But c'est la vie. Have fun :) This however unlike your own restraint is my last response to this topic.
People should keep their "civilized" comments to themselves. It is a personal choice of the owner--the person who is willing to pay all the money for the dog. There are many postives to cropping ears and tails with certian breeds. I suppose those same people wouldn't think its cruel to fix a dane's stomach so it doesn't get bloat. Or animals being neutered.
Apollo is very a beautiful harlequin. I have a friend who has two, but they are both fawns.
What if the dog doesn't WANT the owner to shell out money for an unnecessary and cruel surgery. It is purely cosmetic...and has NO benefit whatsoever for the dog. Bloating can be fatal to the dog, so surgery is necessary. IT IS NOT COSMETIC. Also, neutering and spaying can lower hormones in dogs that make them jumpy and ...well, hormonal. Also, it stops the reproduction of litters and litters of puppies that this world already has so many of. Do you feel enlightened yet?
Well I would hope the dog, if there ever comes the day, would tell them but I have never seen a dane positively miserable after surgery. Truely, they seem to forget they are even there. Nor have they shown signs of emotional sorrow or post-tramatic stress later and life due to cropped ears. Maybe its just me. :)
There was a study on cropped boxers and uncropped boxers at dog parks. The cropped ones were attacked more often by other dogs than the uncropped ones. The cropping of the ears prevented the dogs from communicating with other dogs, because the ears were too stiff.
Humans created floppy ears in dogs. Wild dogs do not have floppy ears because they get in the way. Not to mention all of the problems that come with having floppy ears. They are prone to chronic ear infections, yeast infections, ear mites, etc. Which would you rather? Your dog go through surgery and heal after 2 to 3 weeks tops, or a life time of ear problems that can cause early hearing loss?
I agree that cropping ears and tail is not the right way to go most the time, but I was a handler in dog shows, and a breed like great dane will not fallow AKC standards in show will floppy ears. They have to be cropped, so who knows, maybe they are planning on making sweet apollo a show dog. In England you can show most breed's uncropped.
You see the white wrapping around it? Well its means to make them stick up instead of just lay down like some danes have them kept. It just makes them stay up and pointed.
If you bath your dog, clean their ears and put them on frontline plus they should NEVER get ticks in their ears. Sounds like your dog lives outside maybe. That's pretty neglectful. I've heard people make excuses for cropping tails too - "infections" but what about all the dogs will long tails. It's total BS.
Keeping a dog outside isn't neglectful. I don't know where you guys get these ideas from, but they're absolutely retarded. Big dogs are fully capable to live outdoors and thrive. If Humans weren't around to put them in the house, where in the hell do you think they'll be? Outside of course.
It depends on the breed and the care. To put them outside with no shelter in harsh weather, and no vet care is neglectful. Domestic dogs are a far cry from wild dogs who've been raised by parents to live outside. Wild dogs probably have shorter life spans too. Domestic dogs can and do get heat stroke, diseases, attacked by wild animals and frost bite if left unattended outside. Don't be an ignorant fool.
your an Idiot. Read the info on dogs breed before running your mouth. Great Danes are strictly indoor dogs. If you believe that, I hope to god you never get a domestic dog. Just stick with wolves and coyotes.
@IvIadPierrot your wrong, great danes were bread to be an inside pet. 1) you have to limit there exercise to keep from getting hip problems, 2) there coat is to this for winter........ there are many more... oh and if humans weren't around then there wouldnt be a great dane..
Wrong,I had my share with both American Bulldog's and Pitbull's,my pit was cropped and my AMBULL's where not.Where I come from during the raining season,my AMbull's ears turned black because of infections mainly from fly's,instead my pit with cropped ear didn't had so much of that problem.During the dry season my AMBULL'S where getting more ticks into their ears than my cropped ear pit.
Sadly it was years ago and can't prove it,because I did not had a camara.
I dont crop any of my danes ears, and it certainly not a sign of an owner not caring or not giving attention, that is an unfair remark. Cropped ears is a dying practice. Apollo looks like hes having lots of fun though. I also have a Harli Dane and they are so loopy....LOL!
Those are not the ears. That's the thing you put on it when you get them clipped. It's known to be good looking for a great dane to have there ears clipped. My great dane was abused when she was little. Thats why we adopted her, so her ears are floppy cause the old owner paid no attention to her!
I prefer that the ears be left alone. Danes are beautiful with their ears left alone. It's always been a big thing in the U.S. having them cropped but in the U.K. it's the opposite. I think the trend is beginning to change here in the states so that you're seeing more great danes without cropped ears. The vet I take my dog to no longer allows the cropping to be done at his office because he feels it's inhumane. I tend to agree.
In most cases I agree, however, the danes with the ears cropped seem to know they look fabulous!! hahaha they show off more cuase they know they look good.
He's a gorgeous pup! Er.. adult now, yes. What should be banned? People bringing their matted to the skin dogs to be groomed and refusing to shave. Insisting they be brushed out. Well said!!!! why people do this to danes ( or german mastiffs as they should really be known) is beyond me!
AABINVESTIGATIONS 2 years ago
Because your communist socialist country in Europe doesn't allow it. We still have that freedom, for now!
madmandrils05 2 years ago
England, communist socialist??? lol...
No we believe in leaving the dog as nature intended...as someone said if you don't like the ears, get a different breed of dog!!! do you buy a new car then re-spray it? do you cut the roof off? no you don't! so why change a dogs Nature ears???
AABINVESTIGATIONS 2 years ago
Socialistic.... you don't think socialism prevails in europe? haha... then you my friend need to do a little bit of research.
madmandrils05 2 years ago
Infections?? Wtf? i've had mastiffs all my 37 yrs and not once has one had a infection due to "floppy ears" Thats the poorest excuse i've ever heard,
AABINVESTIGATIONS 2 years ago
We are talking about Great Dane's not mastiffs. YOu should know that different breeds of dogs are known for having different problems. Great Danes with floppy ears are known to have ear problems, especially living in a Warm Climate like VA.
I hope you know these things before you go out and buy your dogs! People need to educate themselves before they assume responsibility with a dog!

and please, research before you make these rediculous claims. It wastes all of our times. Over in America we have to work, the government doesn't pay for everything like over in Europe... which is a good thing!

@madmandrils05 you do realize that communism and socialism are to different things right?
probably not...
SuperPutte1 2 years ago
Yes, that's why I generalized and said Europe, I didn't know what country he lived in. Communism and Socialism are exact opposites. Did you really not know this?
You may need to do a little more research before you post again my friend :).
BTW Great danes were meant to have their ears cropped. It prevents infections.
madmandrils05 2 years ago
@madmandrils05 i am sorry, but i am somewhat confused with your post and what it has to do with my comment.

you don't understand my answer? Then perhaps you are unteachable!!
madmandrils05 2 years ago
@madmandrils05 i am just saying that i asked if you realized the difference between socialism and communism since you grouped them together, that for example socialism is an economical system and not a political system unlike communism. and i also did not comment on whether or not great Danes should have their ears cropped or not.
SuperPutte1 2 years ago
@madmandrils05 besides communism and socialism are not complete opposites, capitalism and communism are complete opposites, however since modern day communism use socialistic AND capitalistic ideas in their economic driving force, for an example take a look at China, even USA with their so called "capitalistic" economy, is not a true capitalistic economy, there are many

how do you cut them
Dane333 2 years ago
you have to go to your vet..they can do it. but what they do is cut off alot of their ear until it looks how they need to, then stitch them up and put bandages on the ears. but it is illegal in some states so you just need to check on it

The reason their is no infection in Europe is because you don't have that much humidity there, and just because some people in America think that ear cropping is better for their dogs doesn't mean you should go around and call America "oldfashoned" then Greatdanelover24 is right, you have no life because you have nothing better to than argue with people about their personal preference??
poopiepants104 2 years ago
What's funny about people like the above person is that instead of just having a discussion on why they feel it's cruel, they have to attack people, call them names, and show that their own IQ is no higher than a 2 year old who throws a fit. I was never rude to you Veik. But it's typical of someone who doesn't have a better come back to just say, "I'm not talking about this anymore!" Although I'm impressed that you know so much about me to know whether or not I have a life. Shame on me?
GreatDaneLover24 2 years ago
Really? Well shame on you for not being able to have an adult conversation. Too bad. Meh. Oh well. The point of the matter is, it isn't bad to crop ears. Nor is it animal abuse.
GreatDaneLover24 2 years ago
hi
first: beautiful dog
second:
cut your ears by yourself and then train some grapple moves cuz they are in the way (you can hurt your auricular cartilage)
dogz too stupid to stop movin with clippin ears (when they playin and stuff like that)
and i go to the veterinarian if my dogz are sick and dont let them suffer until i must kill them cuz the damage is irreparable.
just think you would be the dog
demoniconion 2 years ago
(2nd part of the message)
you would not cut you ears cuz it hurts
you would go to a doctor if your ear would have a infection and dont let it get worser and worser man
i can say that you have no problems with floppy ears ( i own a male great dane labrador mix) if you clean his ears sometimes (once in a month is enough by my dog) i dont think its gonna kill him when i clean his ears ^^"
sry for my bad english
demoniconion 2 years ago
Would YOU ever cut YOUR ears? Cropping is animal abusing and in nearly all Europe forbidden since many years - our dogs never died on "infections". Bad excuse, not more. Get modern and ask the animal welfare organisations, they will all say to you that cropping is not more than animal abuse. If you wanna cut something, cut your finger, but let the puppies.
Veikyuubichan 2 years ago
Wow, anger! So much fun on the net :D Which is BS? The fact that man made floppy ears? Or that you're lucky in the fact that you haven't had to deal with a dog that's had such bad ear infections that he had to be put to sleep? Because it caused other infections and disease. Hmm.. get a life.

I like it. Is it an expensive surgery?
Amber1a6 3 years ago
I think it depends on where you live and what vet you use. Were in phoenix the 1st vet we found wanted $750 to start. We found one in Lake Havasu they wanted $250 big difference. We went with a vet here in phoenix because there good. We did get a discount because a few other Great Danes from the litter were also getting there ears done. So instead of $750 we paid $350. I do agree it is only cosmetic. But a Great Dane does not look like a Great Dane with out it's ears cropped to me.
andie3131 3 years ago
@Amber1a6 his was 350 for a show crop, i got a shorter crop on my brindle that was only 225. hes a great vet that i would recommend to all. i drew what i wanted his ears to look like on the inside of his ear. and he made the other ear match it.
uskellymc 1 year ago
i think cropping their ears is mean, but maybe they want to
restinpeacejimi 3 years ago
with great danes its better to clip because theyre not as stressed with their ears up.
liloperachick 2 years ago
i perfer them cropped because
my dane is a workin boy
and the bulls will nip at his ears so i get his ears cropped so that
1.i can see him and
2. he looks tougher, ppl will stay away
after about 2 days he could care less about the split on his ears
though i hate when owners choose to push the ears together and put that cone splint on the head
izumipearl 3 years ago
Aww! So sweet!! :)
lollipinkjess 3 years ago
Lol god, this is too funny. I said get a life after you attacked me in the first responses to me. The thing is, you have your opinion and I have mine. 1. It's like any surgery that people go through. I don't know any puppy that is awake during cropping. 2. I have plenty of dogs that I don't have their ears cropped. 3. Depending on where you live, having floppy ears can cause serious problems to dogs. The humidity can make them have terrible ear infections and cause early hearing loss.
GreatDaneLover24 2 years ago

I have a friend who has two, but they are both fawns.
catebarber 3 years ago
What if the dog doesn't WANT the owner to shell out money for an unnecessary and cruel surgery. It is purely cosmetic...and has NO benefit whatsoever for the dog. Bloating can be fatal to the dog, so surgery is necessary. IT IS NOT COSMETIC. Also, neutering and spaying can lower hormones in dogs that make them jumpy and ...well, hormonal. Also, it stops the reproduction of litters and litters of puppies that this world already has so many of. Do you feel enlightened yet?
otay5 3 years ago
Well I would hope the dog, if there ever comes the day, would tell them but I have never seen a dane positively miserable after surgery. Truely, they seem to forget they are even there. Nor have they shown signs of emotional sorrow or post-tramatic stress later and life due to cropped ears. Maybe its just me. :)
catebarber 3 years ago
There was a study on cropped boxers and uncropped boxers at dog parks. The cropped ones were attacked more often by other dogs than the uncropped ones. The cropping of the ears prevented the dogs from communicating with other dogs, because the ears were too stiff.
Retrieverman1 3 years ago
Humans created floppy ears in dogs. Wild dogs do not have floppy ears because they get in the way. Not to mention all of the problems that come with having floppy ears. They are prone to chronic ear infections, yeast infections, ear mites, etc. Which would you rather? Your dog go through surgery and heal after 2 to 3 weeks tops, or a life time of ear problems that can cause early hearing loss?
GreatDaneLover24 2 years ago
@catebarber very well said about the bloat issue. thank you!
uskellymc 1 year ago
Apollo has beautiful markings and his crop will turn our very nice. I would love a harlequin with those kind of markings.
And don't listen to these people. Cropping and docking is the owner's choice- not theirs.

I agree that cropping ears and tail is not the right way to go most the time, but I was a handler in dog shows, and a breed like great dane will not fallow AKC standards in show will floppy ears. They have to be cropped, so who knows, maybe they are planning on making sweet apollo a show dog. In England you can show most breed's uncropped.

what the hell does it mean to have a dogs ears clipped or cropped or whatever he's talkin about?
chiefmojorising1 3 years ago
You see the white wrapping around it? Well its means to make them stick up instead of just lay down like some danes have them kept. It just makes them stay up and pointed.
victorialicious7 3 years ago
If you bath your dog, clean their ears and put them on frontline plus they should NEVER get ticks in their ears. Sounds like your dog lives outside maybe. That's pretty neglectful. I've heard people make excuses for cropping tails too - "infections" but what about all the dogs will long tails. It's total BS.
zubery 3 years ago
Keeping a dog outside isn't neglectful. I don't know where you guys get these ideas from, but they're absolutely retarded. Big dogs are fully capable to live outdoors and thrive. If Humans weren't around to put them in the house, where in the hell do you think they'll be? Outside of course.
IvIadPierrot 3 years ago
It depends on the breed and the care. To put them outside with no shelter in harsh weather, and no vet care is neglectful. Domestic dogs are a far cry from wild dogs who've been raised by parents to live outside. Wild dogs probably have shorter life spans too. Domestic dogs can and do get heat stroke, diseases, attacked by wild animals and frost bite if left unattended outside. Don't be an ignorant fool.
zubery 3 years ago
your an Idiot. Read the info on dogs breed before running your mouth. Great Danes are strictly indoor dogs. If you believe that, I hope to god you never get a domestic dog. Just stick with wolves and coyotes.
EmpressCrane 3 years ago

TBrockton 3 years ago
