Somewhere in the song it seems that she sings "Sinful Davey, fucking and stealing", which is what that cunning motherfucker would do in real life, back in the 18th century, before being hanged.
True, it's not so good as Tom Jones, but a good film anyway.
@rickbandana It's a very clear FIGHTING and stealing. Get your ears or headphones cleaned up, preferably both. The song is the only truly outstanding moment in this mediocre movie.
@bokkemans Are you totally sure? I mean, it's so bloody clear as you say? Anyway, what I said is what the real bastard did. But the film, eventhough not a masterpiece, is not mediocre at all: it has funny moments and beautiful landscapes, and all the actors are great. Maybe if you didn't take life so seriously you would apreciate it...
This is one of John Huston's weakest and most forgettable films and all too obviously a rip-off of Tony Richardson's "Tom Jones", but at least it was entertaining.
Geeeennnnte!!! Ma-ra-vi-lha!!!!!!
Good grief - AT LAST! I've seen this single listed on various Esther Ofarim sites but never heard it until now. Thank you conmad 24.
It's soooo good - got that perfect happy/sad balance; the sort of thing capable of destroying a wistful sensitive kid watching an afternoon film in the mid 70's!
I first saw this movie at the Royal Theater in West Los Angeles in 1969. I have always believed that the opening music and song are wonderful. I thank you so much for posting it.
@jg1988 Angelica Huston was originally considered for the lead female role, but was not casted in the movie. The film is, however, directed by her father John Huston.

John Hurt's performance is great, of course.
