The Russians copy everyone else`s planes and do it badly most of their planes are complete stolen ideas fro the USA and UK .This is clearly a copy of a Harrier done badly .End of story.
@superzapper With all due respect but you are completely wrong yak 38 was next step after yak 36 what was developed much early then the harrier despite that russians commenced program such planes several years before. If you dont agree then you can find trustfull info in the net about this matter. Also the way of take off and landing was completely different! Yak 38 was not such a good as the harrier but this is another story.
@MrKorzhov@MrKorzhov The Harrier was still the worlds first operational vertical take off and landing jet aircraft, and the YAK-36 was developed pretty much at the same time as the H.S. Kestrel. With regards to Mattmatt115 comment the P1154 ring any bells? Supersonic Harrier... Designed! The YAK-141 looks ratehr similar eh? But thats no surprise is it.
Its completely different in design. The Harrier used a special single engine very high bypass design, while the Yak had 3 engines, which contributed to its lack of reliability.
I'm not a fan of russian equipment but hate to see a pilot die regardless. have to respect anyone with the balls to get into anything that has the term expieremental involved.
Looks like the pilot didn't get enough speed when he tried to take off, and the wings couldn't generate enough lift. The engine thrust alone wasn't enough to keep it in flight.
Also you can see one of the greatest test pilots dying ;( He challenged his destiny to the fullest and lost ... long seven seconds to impact trying to achieve a wonder. RIP
no. u can see the perfect example of soviet\russian mentality. "I would die for this piece of metal, because if i dont, i would be ashamed of myself and would never fly any airplane again"
so he died. how dumb is that? im not trying to say anything bad about the pilot. no way. Im just saying how much i hate the soviet\russian believe system.
Give me the statistics of how many pilots died on the soviet and on the western side during the cold war. A test pilot is not a usual pilot, they are identifying themselves with the aircrafts they are testing. You always can hear phrases like "this is my child/baby" .. do you think this is just a coincidence? They are so proud of doing what they are doing, they are often even ready to die for it. So consider this your assumption shouldn't be that onesided / politics-based. Think about it! ;)
if the yak on that video is a very first prototype of such VTOL craft than you're right. I agree that any test pilot (soviet or american doesnt matter) is different from an ordinary pilot. BUT If this is just a military mass produced airplane that malfunctioned during the take off you dont wanna call this plane "your baby" and die fighting for its so called "life" simply because of malfunctioned piece of metal. Any pilot's life is WAY WAY WAY more important than life of an airplane.
This is indeed one of the first rolling start attempts on one of the first prototypes, so there is no "BUT" in this one :) I understand they feel like gods in the cockpit. I have a long vid of a testflight, where a pilot loses the elevation rudder and the plane falls into stall. His talk on the radio is like: "Hmm, im falling. Pressure and power stable. Trying to .." No excitment in voice at all ..In the end he is landing the plane safely. Many of them die cuz they r just busy with thinking :)
Так вот я частенько общался с вояками старших поколений и сам служил в армии - после окончания Второй Мировой всегда и везде жизнь и здоровье людей ценилось превыше всего.
I was always told Yak-38s had to take off vertically and use a 90 second transition to level flight. Something about them not being able to generate the lift needed in a rolling start or the forward engines being prone to flip it on it's back. Either way, I didn't think it could perform a rolling start.
Like the harrier the vertical start with full weapon load leads to high fuel consumption, reducing flight time. Roling start was developed to minimize, and allow to lift a higher weapon load.
This is a testing video of an yearly model. The vertical thrust vectoring didn't work properly in time so the plane lost its altitude, you can see the plane starts floating since the pilot was trying to save it.
But this is a Yak 38, one of the worst aircraft ever built. It is far too heavy with far too small of a wing to be a fighter. It has an extremely short range too, so it's not really that useful.
I've heard rumors that the yak-38 is probably the worst airframes to be bulit for S/VTOl operations let alone conventional flights. I'm begining to belive them.
Yet another ridiculous American, ATTEMPTING to insult good Soviet equipment. Unfortunately, you have no idea what you are talking about. Perhaps someday you'll actually get how the military world works, and you'll understand that you're not on top of the world. As well, you most certainly were not in any position to defeat the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in it's prime. If you have nothing productive to say, then don't bother commenting Russian videos.
ok commie all i know is this, every person i've ever meet or heard has always said the forger cant manuver worth a shit, it guzzles gas like a russian drinks vodkla, and in my opinion what the fuck kind of aircraft has 3 engines in it's fuelsalage. If i'm not mistaken it had a very limited service life in afganistan. more limited than our M60 patton tank saw in the gulf of 91' so if you call that an aircraft then all you have to do to get in annapolis is just open the door.
Except that unlike the other excellent planes the Soviets produced, the Yak 38 was a failure which could carry 100KG bombs and had engines with horrible rates of burnout.
Shame. The same country that built such amazing planes as the Mig line and such, also produced this abomination.
fe: the CIA world factbook says about the european country 'Liechtenstein' that 'defense is the responsibility of Switzerland' which is actually NOT true...
The resulting high acceleration (due to the high propulsion needed for short take-off) trigger's the pilot's natural instinct to point the plane sharply nose-down.
Good pilots are trained to ingnore this compulsion, but in this case the pilot was most likely poorly trained and had little to no experience with the situation.
Seems to me that the nose stays raised throughout the attempt. Sorry but Russia recognised the need for training, the Forger crews were treated the same as Harrier pilots, they just had worse technology to work with. Also, no massive acceleration is seen on that tape compared to the normal fast jet with afterburner.
I wouldn't say Froger was worse then Harrier...just that unlike Harrier[who's pilots original had helicopter flying background] Russian navy didn't recruit helicopter pilots for its Froger program
Yes now,but original pilots..both RN,RAF and USMC were selected from helicopter pilots because the thinking was they were more familiar with VTOL then fast jet pilots;) I can't guarantee that info is correct though, think I saw it on TV once
@Dalbert342. Correct for the US Marines who did recruit helicopter pilots at first but the Harrier required pilots trained as Harrier pilots. There was a lot of crashed before the policy was changed. I don't know about the RAF Harrier requirments
@binaway Don't know, but I do know Marines stoped recruiting helicopter pilots because they kept slamming into the ground when they attempted to land...a shitload of pilots died before they got it right
You must be one of those propagandist Russians who don't know their ass from their mouth, which leads to speaking a lot of shit...such as your comment below.
If the F-35B is a copy of the Yak-141, then list every system that the F-35B has that was previously unique to Yak-141 and has never been used on any aircraft prior to the Yak-141.
Actually, during the chaos of downfall of Soviet Union. The were consultions between LM and Yak ingeneers, they worked for almost a year together in order to "exchange" the knowledge.
And from this came Yak-141. Worlds FIRST Supersonic VTOL aircraft. Yeah, the FIRST ONE BEFORE ANYBODY EVEN WAS DESIGNING ONE.
