The citation from last paragraph of the novel: "Somehow towards evening I went from a garden and at the gate have faced the charming girl-teenager. Did she? … thin, slender … a pale face, shy, very narrow shoulders, absolutely children's elbows which are pulling together a knitted kerchief as if to her it is cold.
She has looked, is inquisitive-is modest. Smartly bent eyebrows, clever bluish eyes. They have singed light … Have filled in with light – and have moved behind itself, in the far."
The knowledge of God through Love, not a "sad love affair".
Pasha went to the convent not just to escape. This is her sacrifice for the sake of the person she loved. Anton was seriously ill and Pasha prayed and gave a promise to God that she would leave the family for the convent if the boy survived. Anton did and Pasha kept her promise. In Anton's delirium the girl comes as the guardian angel and saves the boy from the Death's hands to bring him to Life and Light....
Anton is confused about what romantic love is. He's young, and a dreamer. He was taught that desiring someone is adultery. He's uncertain of how sexuality and love can coexist. At the same time, Anton isn't *that* young, and his previous ideals are challenged. He is surrounded by images of sexuality, from the bull among the cows, to Pasha pretending to fend off the shepherd. That incident leads to Anton's angry outburst, the result of his envy and frustration, and a last grasp at childhood.
What is the symbol of the bull in the movie? I've just read your analysis and I thought if you don't mind explaining the ideology behind the presence of the bull in the scenes of affair, loss of hope, and death.
The fire started when the husband of the zaftig bride took revenge on her and his father, who he believed were having an affair. Anton imagined the brunette next door as a goddess, only to learn that she's imperfect. Her eye might seem like a minor flaw, but people didn't used to be so understanding. She's doomed to a loveless life--just like Pasha, who leaves Anton's family for the cloister. She's chased there by mourning and Anton's behavior. Anton chose an illusion over his "truest" love.
So the message here is that you should go for the chick with perfect features, and if her eye is askew, then you probably shouldn't be with her? I don't understand.
Of cource, no. I guess you did not understand the general idea. The boy experiences the First Love, ideal love. Remember youself when you was 16. He is a dreamer, romantic... He images his love as ideal, empyrean one! you better try to get feelings of the movie, not words or images, but, however, through them.
i dont get it... what the hell happened?????????? i understood that he was in love with 2 different woman. pasha and that other girl with the colored sunglasses on. then i get confused. he sees her eyes, pasha finds him covered in snow. and now shes gone. WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?!?! someone please give me a GOOD, IN DEPTH synopsis please!!!
She left this family, maybe she thought that was her fault when Anton fell ill... And just think. Her potential fiance died (a bull killed him), then Anton's mental disorder. So many disasters And she decided to do away
I understood that basic part of it. I just didn't understand why the glamour girl had a messed up eye. And why was he lying in the snow? Did one of them die? It seemed like there was a lot happening there at the end.
He was shoked when he saw her eye. 100 years ago people were more sensitive. The didn't know about terrorists' attacks and other horrible things we can watch every day. Just read classical novels about those people. Even a common situation (we think that this situation is common, in century 21) could be dangerous for their mind.
So, this snow is just a delirium. And, of course, there is a bit of surrealism in this fragment.
I understood everything: the boy loves 2 women - poor parlormaid and glamour girl (maybe she was a prostitute). Pasha (parlourmaid) really loves him too but the glamour just want to "refresh her soul". He wants to be with them but he loses both Pasha and the glamour.
This is a master piece! Thank you for uploading.

Absolutely a triumph of animation.
The intersection between motion capture and painterly inferface, particularly as it becomes both mannerist and impressionist is superb.
As for the story, well, I'll have to watch it more than once. But I don't think I'll regret having done so.

I also don't understand. Thanks to all who have tried to explain. Could we please have a little more detail?
Also, part of the confusion is from the heavy morality emphasis.
Who was the older woman? A lady of questionable morals? Who was he living with? A boarding house where Pasha worked? What shepherd? Why the fire?
And this animation is less clear than his other work. Why?
It's stunning, though. His Rusalka is a work of genius.

Police: "Make room!"
Ladies: "Who is killed?" "Shepherd, I think."
Police: "Make room!"
Slim: "Hahahah! I killed them!"
Teamster and second man: "What a wimp, but did it ´well´. That´s what happens when it´s up to women." "Pity. Chick was a cute."
Groom had got that his father slep with his bride, (probably) got insane -} murdered.
