its too bad that YT took down all the stereo remastered versions of this. You could clearly distinguish the perfect vocal and harmony and each instrument, especially Paul's thumping bassline.
Interesting to hear the song evolution when compared to the end product. John's quirky vocal harmonizing is easy to hear on this. BTW, John from last year, I don't really think the Beatles ever went downhill; more like the road just branched for them. As for John's singing being off. Listen closer; it's his unique style. Also low harmony is more difficult than the high harmony. My opinion only
@ZZJoCa At least for me low harmony is harder and John definitely had a unique spuedo-Everly Bro.s style harmony. Especially,(understandably so) their earlier works. BTW I think you could have found a better adjvective than "quirky" LoL!
@MrUnderdog1970 Hahaha, you may be right. I'm not much of a wordsmith. Here's Wiki's comment on his vocal style......"Lennon's singing voice was recognized as distinctive, versatile, and variable. " Variable - maybe that's where I got quirky from. I do agree with your Everly Bros comparison and I expect they were a major influence.
Thank you for sharing this. So interesting to hear part of the evolution of this track, which has a chorus in this version (discarded on the final take).
For the younger, new Beatles listeners out there, although he sings throughout the song, Paul's voice is the one that solos at 2:01. This way you will be able to distinguish between John and Paul. Obviously, this comment is not meant for most Beatles fans who already know the difference.
Yeah - but John's voice (and I love John) is a bit off. Just a bit, now. Still very good. McCartney, on the other hand, is dead on - every single note, right throughout the song. I've heard that McCartney had perfect pitch - not sure about John. Doesn't matter really - they were great together - and I'm sure John had his perfect pitch days too.
There`s a book out that tells you how many takes they recorded for each of the songs they recorded and you just wouldn`t believe it. It was taken from the Abbey road notes on the tapes and it`s insane. Sometimes hundreds of takes and the reason was that`s how they wrote. They always wrote off of what they recorded before, like a painter stepping back to look at what he just painted and slowly add improvements.
Incredible how they would take a simple idea and just work the hell out of it until they had a final song. Pretty much explains why they would have 9 gazillion takes for something. They would use the tape as a reference and build it from there, and that doesn`t even count the demo tapes. I heard Lennon almost went nuts working on "I`m only sleeping" and I can`t even imagine the hell they went through with the McCartney crap like Maxwells Silver Hammer. No wonder they broke up.
I know what you mean, the fab, especially Paul, started to go downhill starting with Sgt. Peppers, it may be the best album of all time to some people but, i dont really like it. post 67 they made a lot of crap in my opin.
this is better than the actual version imo

@ZZJoCa Yes, they were influenced by the Everly's by their own admission. I definitely understood where you were coming from in your comment.

@ZZJoCa Someone on YouTube said - John's voice is completely honest. I liked that.

@wojiaokatya Agreed and I might add uninhibited and candid to the list. I don't think he sang in front of the bathroom mirror very much, :)

I heard they both had perfect pitch. Which is odd, considering the odds of such.

Oh certainly. And don't forget they were basically practicing and experimenting on here. Thats how they got so good.
