Mm A close intersperced double V8 type engine rather than a genuine W16. I bet they probably took some design prompts from the VW VR6 for this kind of close knit offset cylinder head arrangement. A true W engine is more like what English Electric Napier produced for their railton car.
@RocketScientist79 Still a very good animation nontheless and very educational. The only other 16 I remember was on the BRM methanol runner from the fifties that was a V16 based around a 1.5 litre cut down and supercharged Rolls Royce Merlin copy. Very noisy and rather unreliable.
@thewheeliekid So in terms of static and dynamic balancing it must be like a straight 8, I.e. 8 crank pins, set into 4 pairs thus the two end pins rise and fall together (1 and 8), but surely a balance shaft is required to account for the two V's being out of synchronisation.
I.e. 1 and 8 are the same, opposed by 2 and 7 at 180 degrees out. The rest appear to be at 90 degrees to those already mentioned for engine smoothness?
sorry but I never said v16. I said half radial, like on old aircraft where you have all cylinders around the prop shaft, since all cylinders are directed towards a central point. An engine in a V is a literal meaning as you look down the crankshaft correct? So if you look down the crank on this it's not a V, not even a double V... Hence the confusion.
I'm a little confused by the terminology used here. I assumed the definition of a W engine was basically two V engines linked together by a gear of some sort (Two crankshafts). This seems not to show a double V engine at all but almost half a radial engine since all cylinders use the same crankshaft?
Help please does anyone know how many cycle the Bughatti engine is Im having an argument with my friend and he thinks its a 16 cycle engine and we both know its 16 cylinders but Im sure its not a 16 cycle engine I was thinking its maybe a 6 cycle engine but not really sure, we could use some help here anyone .???
@lolfake111 no it isn't, but it's now more about what people understand under a W-engine. A real W-eninge has only 3 cilinder benches with in each bench an equal number of cilinders. So you could have 3x2=6 or 3x3=9 or 3x4=12 or 3x5=15 configuration ... so you can't get 16 cylinders in a W-engine. This W-eninge here is the "modern" version of a W-engine, but actually it's more 2 V-engines modified to one. This is a real W-engine: watch?v=BBOPyV4Bbxw And sorry for my english, but i did my best :)
@akhristov indeed a W, but a w-engine is a " \!/ " -engine but you can't write it like that so they type a w :). This one is like you say a double V not a w (= \!/) - engine. But 2 V makes idd a W configuration.
@laurentlapierre Then technically what you're referring to as a W engine is a \!/ engine, and a double-V engine is a W engine. :P
Anyway, it's just a terminology conflict. They call it a WR anyway I think, but since those engines are more common than the three-bank engines, I think the W terminology is fine.
would be cooler if it was a 2 stroke

I wonder how many blow off valves it have?
2 for piston? xD pistons compress the air and it should blow off xD just joking xD

@bluestreak101
it's a W 16 and not a v16 because if you look at the cylinders from the side you can see that they are put on the crankshaft in a w pattern

w16 is based on the original VW vr6. more sophisticated though yet finds its roots in the vr6

@laurentlapierre Actually it is, two sets of 8 cylinders split into two V's. It's more like two V's with a 30-50 degree angle between
