I'm a mechanical noob, but it looks like your wheel wells aren't quite big enough for the tires, not knocking it, I think an off-road van is fantastic. What's your wheelbase like and do you find that the rear over hang is a problem? I've only been wheeling once and in a Bronco (I love the Bronco). The visibility out the front looks like it would be fantastic though.
My front axle swings forward when compressed and have not had any clearance problems yet. Stock wheelbase and 8" wider track, best make fullsize van for forward visibility with the short sloping hood.
I do like the unconventional aspect of it. But when I get a wheeler of my own, a Ford Bronco will be much cheaper and easier to make into a off-road rig. Hell, Broncos are pretty damn capable right out of the box, or were. But, the van is really awesome and really unique.
ahh that is a beautiful van, what year is it? i've got a 1975 B300, exact same color, body is practically identical but with a pop top. what was needed to change it to 4x4? looks like a pretty involved task but i dream of converting mine some day...
awesome van, i have an awd express, i wish pathfinder would make a lift for mine. as far as vans go i got mine loaded up at the factory and would make an awesome off road edition.
you posess some very good fab skills maybe you could mount a boom, to hold the camera. and a basket carrier on top would look even more menacing.
Posi rear Dana 70, open front Dana 60, 35" tires, about 18" over stock compared to when she was 2 wheel drive. 2 years to build - get started on one :)))
I'll love to start one after I finish my 99 TRD Tacoma. So far I've solid axle swaped a late 70's ford f350 frount axle with a coustom 3 link. And swapped out the rear with a GM 14 bolt. Next to come will be a exo cage and dual cases. I do most of my wheeling in So. california.
I believe the ram vans can accomodate an older style engine and or tranny, such as a torqueflite, do some research before deciding. The biggest factors being $ and lengh of time you want to invest. To me the end result was worth the time, 2 years, and I spent about $7000. I would not sell my beast for triple that now, just a beefy bumper and winch left to go.
Off roading RV I love it!
