Actually when the M5 has its M button on it doesn't walk away from the C63 AMG, it will pull a car length or two. Why because of the M5 has a V10 & C63 has a V8.... You'd expect more from the M5 but you don't, it really is shocking!
If someone was going to give you a car & the only cars left was Mercedes C63 6.3L V8 & a BMW M5 V10.... Mate I wouldnt even think twice! I would choose a Mercedes C63. Why because its a true German Powered Technology Car that doesnt have any issues, such as gearbox, sunroof not closing etc!

I'm just trying to state that both BMW and Mercedes have an equal amount of problems once you get past the 100,000 mile marker. Although most of the problems with our BMW's, and Mercedes, in the past havn't been engine at all. Power doors not closing, tire pressure monitor, etc.

bigger displacement make easier power but it doesn't mean that smaller displacement can't reach the performance of that of big displacement hp and tq wise

@Thtblkbrit i can tell you never been to track before, on track your car will be all ways above 4000rpm, even a laggy car like EVO you can ignore the lag, coz the car will always have boost.i own a 2011 C63, but ill never take it to the track. so which one is better on track isnt going to affect the sales as much as personal preference.
i use c63 for daliy, for fun ill drive my supra down for drag race on weekends.M3 EVO they both not my piece of cake, just making an example.

The M5 is heavier then my ex wife that's why it's slower. I prefer the M3. Been looking around and it looks like the M3 is going back to 6 cyl and the V10 on the M5 is going back to the V8. BMW is going turbo. One already has 550 hp, I think it's the X6 M version.

The engine torque isnt that interesting, the torque that comes trough the gearbox to the tyres is interesting, for sure the mercedes has more torque but it has a longer geared gearbox. Torque = length * Force

Cars weight about the same (M5 being 50lb heavier), so add 50hp to the C63, and they should be even, which is most likely very light tuning, given you can get the same engine with 518hp (i.e. what do you need to do to get 518hp out of it? I know AMG offer a ~480hp tune, but do they also plan the full 518 one?).
@scrokostas V8 vs V10 does not matter at all. Displacement and REV is what matter. Unfortunately more cylinders and higher rev also mean more parasisitcal power loss due to higher friction (friction goes up super-linear vs rev, and surface area of cylinders (which is worse off on smaller). So at same volume a lower cylinder engine will get more power of less fuel. I would take BMW over AMG, but I also understand physical quite well.
@goguhu At the end larger displacement have more room for power improvement, which is good, however smaller engines with higher rev should ( in theory ) benefit of lighter weight (not so in this case), but keep in mind transmission is also part of the equation, and I would guess that BMW V10+SMG weight less than AMG 6.2L+Auto ... even if the engine weight more (gear box can be lightweight due to less torque, rev matter less, assuming low friction / heat generated).
@goguhu Now, the BMW compensate for this by having internals allowing higher RPM, and AMG compensate for lower RPM by having larger displacement. So assume AMG @ 6.8k and BMW @ 8.3k (and 'perfect friction').
6.2 x 6.8 == 42.1 vs 5.0 x 8.3 == 41.5
42.1 / 41.5 == 1.014 (advantage AMG)
518 / 507 == 1.021 (advantage AMG)
So basically AMG'S engine is about 0.7% 'better' than the BMW V10 when it comes to efficiency (and given the friction at higher rev, the AMG should get a slight better mileage).
@goguhu dam I hate this 500char limit ... anywhom ... so conclusion is that these engines are VERY close when it comes to 'engineering', they just got there different way, and at the end I would say BMW's way is a bit better, as you get a wider/flatter torque curve, and lighter transmission. But it's close ... just two ways to the same goal. I like the 6.2 due to sound, and I like the 5.0 due to sound ... just different.
I am all for the Merc. The exhaust note is unbelievable. All the merc lovers out there need to remember this is a stage 2 tuned c63 vs a essentially stock m5......I would say the m5 held its own pretty well especially against a car that is supposed to dominate the straights. @Thtblkbrit i can tell you never been to track before, on track your car will be all ways above 4000rpm, even a laggy car like EVO you can ignore the lag, coz the car will always have boost.i own a 2011 C63, but ill never take it to the track. so which one is better on track isnt going to affect the sales as much as personal preference.
i use c63 for daliy, for fun ill drive my supra down for drag race on weekends.M3 EVO they both not my piece of cake, just making an example.

You're right, I haven't been to a track, only track Ive been on was the one at BMW's drivers school in NC. I meant eliminate the turbo lag for everyday driving, because the Evo is a nice car and all, but I couldn't live with one for everyday use,

@Thtblkbrit common on track use down the bottom, not daliy drive with a EVO, ive said EVO arent my taste, 2lt baby engine bolt on a big turbo with hight boost from factory, my supra is making 491.5rwkw 980nm, with someone more interested in to power, ive choiced C63 over M3
and kid dont mention BMW driver school. try to handle a car that go down 1/4 in 9.8sec.
your 18 years old kiddo. so if you spend more time on your home work, you might be able to own M3 or C63 before 35

For the last time, I have no interest in track racing. I prefer everyday driving, so I'll stick with my E39. Reason I went to the school was for the experience, this is why I miss Europe, there was more to driving than going fast in a straight line. And actually, I do do my hw, but I have no interest in owning either car, I'll take an F10 M5 for an all around driving experience. Thank you & have a nice day.

The M5 is heavier then my ex wife that's why it's slower. I prefer the M3. Been looking around and it looks like the M3 is going back to 6 cyl and the V10 on the M5 is going back to the V8. BMW is going turbo. One already has 550 hp, I think it's the X6 M version.

The engine torque isnt that interesting, the torque that comes trough the gearbox to the tyres is interesting, for sure the mercedes has more torque but it has a longer geared gearbox. Torque = length * Force

@scrokostas Obviously, but it would be interesting to get some detail for people about the mods, cost, advantages/disadvantages and est. gains. Cars weight about the same (M5 being 50lb heavier), so add 50hp to the C63, and they should be even, which is most likely very light tuning, given you can get the same engine with 518hp (i.e. what do you need to do to get 518hp out of it? I know AMG offer a ~480hp tune, but do they also plan the full 518 one?).

@scrokostas V8 vs V10 does not matter at all. Displacement and REV is what matter. Unfortunately more cylinders and higher rev also mean more parasisitcal power loss due to higher friction (friction goes up super-linear vs rev, and surface area of cylinders (which is worse off on smaller). So at same volume a lower cylinder engine will get more power of less fuel. I would take BMW over AMG, but I also understand physical quite well.

@goguhu At the end larger displacement have more room for power improvement, which is good, however smaller engines with higher rev should ( in theory ) benefit of lighter weight (not so in this case), but keep in mind transmission is also part of the equation, and I would guess that BMW V10+SMG weight less than AMG 6.2L+Auto ... even if the engine weight more (gear box can be lightweight due to less torque, rev matter less, assuming low friction / heat generated).

Respond to this video... 5L @ V10, assuming square cylinder (simplified) : 5L/10 = 2*pi*r^3 -> r = 43mm, 6.2L/8 = 2*pi*r^3 -> 50mm.
Total surface (touching the cylinder wall / creating friction) : 2*r*pi*r (r here is both the radius and height of piston / sleeve).
BMW 10 x 2 x 43^2 x pi == 1161 cm^2 -> 4.3 cm^2 per cm^3
AMG 8 x 2 x 50^2 x pi == 1256 cm^2 -> 4.9 cm^2 per cm^3
Hence the AMG have less surface friction vs it's volume than BMW, and hence potential for higher yield.

@goguhu Now, the BMW compensate for this by having internals allowing higher RPM, and AMG compensate for lower RPM by having larger displacement. So assume AMG @ 6.8k and BMW @ 8.3k (and 'perfect friction').
6.2 x 6.8 == 42.1 vs 5.0 x 8.3 == 41.5
42.1 / 41.5 == 1.014 (advantage AMG)
518 / 507 == 1.021 (advantage AMG)
So basically AMG'S engine is about 0.7% 'better' than the BMW V10 when it comes to efficiency (and given the friction at higher rev, the AMG should get a slight better mileage).

@goguhu dam I hate this 500char limit ... anywhom ... so conclusion is that these engines are VERY close when it comes to 'engineering', they just got there different way, and at the end I would say BMW's way is a bit better, as you get a wider/flatter torque curve, and lighter transmission. But it's close ... just two ways to the same goal. I like the 6.2 due to sound, and I like the 5.0 due to sound ... just different.

I am all for the Merc. The exhaust note is unbelievable. All the merc lovers out there need to remember this is a stage 2 tuned c63 vs a essentially stock m5......I would say the m5 held its own pretty well especially against a car that is supposed to dominate the straights. Again, the merc is an unbelievable car, i just wish it was offered in a manual...
