Congratulations, a brilliant interpretation. You could pass the score of this piece for me? I am also looking for a piece called "Hurricane's Eyes" by any chance you would have it too? thanks and hugs
@jpsmith89 Of course technique, notes and rhythms are more important, but emotion is often the contest difference between two people who nail all the notes, that X-Factor (Sorry for splitting this in two)
@jpsmith89 If you get into it emotionally, then you will play your interpretation, not something that doesn't appeal to you. Some people like the melodic flow of the written and choose to play it fast, with mostly straight rhythms (like this guy). Others like to slow it down a little bit to allow a more organic rhythm, and get their flow from expression and through emphasis on some more "important" phrases.
I'm convinced that you have very much talent, but I think this is somewhat lacking from a musicality standpoint. Some criticism: The accelerations were a tad too fast, thus making it sound somewhat frantic. Try playing it with emotion; get absorbed into the song. After all, it is a fairly romantic piece. You should look up Arkadiusz Katny's video. Even though he is not as skilled technique-wise and misses many notes, he has flow and an X-factor that makes the piece beautiful.
@Psychokinesismaniacf For the sake of your future critiques, telling someone to play with emotion offers no proper insight or instruction. What if I absorbed myself into the song and I ended up playing it extremely fast? I would be following your request after all.
@Psychokinesismaniac Stoyanov doesn't own this channel. He is a professional musician, and could outplay both of us any day. Plus, his musicality is just fine on the recording of this in his "Percussive Counterpoint" album.
There's several techniques for 4-mallet playing, including Steven's, Burton, and Traditional. If you're interested in learning, I would suggest asking your instructor.
Private lessons with someone who really "gets" four-mallet playing is definitely the way to go. There are also a lot of great books and resources, including Leigh Howard Stevens "Method of Movement," but the best book I've found for breaking it down to its simplest terms and teaching you in a practical way has been Giff Howarth's "Simply Four." Check it out.

What size marimba does this piece require?
mxrocker149 1 year ago
@mxrocker149 only requires a 4.3 (low A) octave marimba, so most people can play it :D
