When your playing white learn 1 variation and try to get good at it, but with black you should learn some of the basic responses to most common openings.
do many tactical puzzles they help for the middle game, learn basic knowledge of the game, like good and bad bishops, when are knights stronger than just play you will get better eventually
Personally, I'd say try to learn more uncommon openings if you plan to play in tournaments. No one ever really expects anything different from the really common stuff and will have no idea what to do. Learn 1 opening for white and a solid defence for common white openings when playing as black. If you feel comfortable with them, you could also try a gambit opening.

To be honest, u can play f3 and still beat 1500's if you master all your tactics! Tactics should be your first name when your under 1800.
MrFedel 2 years ago
You don't need to master tactics to beat 1500s...

the best learning tool in chess I ever used was a copy of chess master for the pc.
I learnt more from the lessons on there than any book or program i have ever used since.
