Sitting listening to this tonight here in the UK thinking of the brilliant John Walker whom we have just lost, and the best vocal group of the 60s. Cant help but shed a tear for John. RIP forever mate. Thanks for the best music of my life guys.... Regards to Johns family, also Scott and Gary.
This is a wonderful song that is just so beautifully sung by Scott Walker. My friends and I sang this (murdered it more like) on the bus on our way to the England Test Match a few years back during a croon fest. Just brilliant stuff.
I meant Scott and we chatted for a while and found we were both from the Cincinnati area. I, from the east side, He, from Hamilton, Ohio(just north of Cincy).
It was a wonderful conversation as we talked about places and people we knew.
Dear Guidofski ...this is insight on yr part ..for Scott has great depth as an observer - he listens far better than he wishes to talk; yr comments ."so young, so experienced, so world weary" are painfully true of him. he is a very sharp observer of the human condition...and to my thinking his work is the very best expression of what emotional pain is...superb in interpretation, flawless in delivery and expression..truly, the greatest talent of his time..
A lot of people mention this song negatively, but I do have a very different vision. Sure it doesn't sound like Scott 1-4 but it's a pretty piece of pop music. And if you listen to the words it refers to someone older than Engel was at the time, which indicates he was a great character singer (guess you can see it especially on the Brel songs)
" (...) which indicates he was a great character singer (...) " Absolutely. And although he didn't write this one, you can tell his heart is in it. I believe he was a master observer of the human condition, which allowed him to write and sing with a knowledge far beyond his years. Everything he wrote between the ages of 23-27 (and of course his Brel renditions) is staggering. How someone so young sounds so experienced and world-weary is a big part of my fascination for early Scott Walker.
Singers nowadays think they are great. The difference is The Walker Bros. were Great. Eat your hearts out newbies. You are not a speck on artists of old.... Once again Thanks for posting.
Thanks for posting this at last. The excellent Scott with his Greatest song of all time. The Best voice of the sixties for me. Still love you Scott. Although you dont like that praise and attention. Wish you would record some more classics like this. All the Best Scott forever....
Great song! Oddly enough, despite having lived in Cincinnati for my entire life (27 years), I can't recall ever hearing this song before, even though I love oldies music.
He's still a local artist - Hamilton is only 20 miles from downtown Cincinnati and is the second-largest city (population wise) in the Greater Cincinnati area (second only to Cincinnati proper).
I first heard this song while stationed on the USS Simon Lake AS-33, Holy Loch, Scotland in 1969. I picked up the 45RPM record(PHILIPS label) at one of the local stores in Dunoon, Scotland. Still have today. It was A hit in the UK. Didn't even make Billboards Charts here in the states. Great soft rock!
So glad you liked it! As far as I know it's on 2 cd's "It's Raining Today: The Scott Walker Story (1967/1970)" and "No Regrets - The Best of Scott Walker & The Walker Brothers 1965-1976". But I think it's great that you ordered the single (I still own a turntable too; it's such a wonderful slice of history!)
Thanks so much for your words; oh and as for the voice thing... ditto. ;)
Thank you for posting this! I have never heard this before, it's not on any CD compilation is it? I'm grateful I still have a turntable, as I ordered the single of this today. Scott 's voice does it for me any day of the week.
Scott will be judged in time as one of the greats of the 20th century , the Man had such style what a Voice this song is a Nuggett

Absolutely beautiful and haunting, but Scott's work has that quality about it. You get lost in the sound and feeling. I prefer his pop sound better.
This song is so beautiful and sad.

@Ze186
I've got the same opinion of this song. It happens to be a fine pop song- melodically, lyrically. And, yes, Scott inhabits the soul of the character.

Ironic, isn't it? I guess it didn't get much airplay outside of the UK, even though Scott's an American and a native of Ohio (though not from Cincy).
That's the beauty of youtube - it lets you discover all kinds of hidden treasures! :)
