Every year, a celebratory bell rings at the famous Tsukiji Fish Market, where buyers bid on a ritual first tuna of the year. This January, the winning tuna sold for nearly $400,000, which is the highest amount ever paid for a single fish.
Now, granted, this was a big fish. It was more than 700 pounds. But sliced up, that still comes to more than $500 per pound, or maybe around $25 per bite. Say good bye to the last remaining blue fin tuna.
Quota or not, fishing Bluefin tuna is a symptom of human foolishness. Bluefin stocks in the eastern Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea are facing imminent collapse after years of mismanagement by ICCAT. International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas affirmed 2 yrs ago in 2009 that Atlantic bluefin tuna stocks have declined dramatically over the last 40 years, by 72% in the East Atlantic, & by 82% in the West Atlantic. Shame of Outdoor Channel.
@MrJamesorrow so true and i'm an absolute tuna lover... no sports/taste may drive an animal to extinction... but that said, I know no one is going to do something about it... me neither..
Yes, these fish should be taken with the bare hand only. If you can compete with its strength fine. We have the ability to make these sensible choices. This is not much different than killing a great sperm whale, or great elephant. No glory what so ever.
I saw a video of a Japanesse tuna fisherman. He fishes tuna to cover his life expenses. He uses no reel, just bare hands. And has caught 600+ size tuna this way. And, when I do get a chance to break away to go fishing, I usually fly fish. It is a little dif from the reel and mono, especially when I also "hand tie" my own flys. I also bow hunt. You can have your "deep troll net" and down rigger.......
I think it was a great catch, and I support hunting and fishing sports if done in an ethical manner and if quotas are adhered to...unfortunately this sportsman did not act ethically - he used the boat to chase the fish down and harpoon it after it was hooked up, instead of using his own skills and stamina to land the fish.
Bluefin used to run well over 1000lbs in PEI, the relentless commercial fishing has put an end to that. While I applaud PEI for managing the Bluefin in a responsible way, Bluefin are headed for near term extinction in the Meditteranean where some of these fish will travel. The biomass is now so small with continuing allowable quotas by ICCAT and rampant illegal poaching, coupled with insane prices for the Jap market, their fate has been practically sealed.
Nice fish... Thanks for the vid. I can only dream of catching one of these, (and I do) and I can only eat tuna out of a can. Which was probably caught by someone dragging 40 kilometers of net.
This fish at least had a sporting chance and I bet it was eaten, enjoyed and apreciated.
im 16 and ive caught one of these fish this summer it weight 970 pounds dressed and got 20 thousand dollars for doing it so bitch and complain all you want i had fun and watch sum of the videos in italy they catch the fish when its a baby and do it thousands at a timee
first off, the name of our island is Prince Edward Island not Edwards. And the reason they killed this fish is because there is a quota on blue fin tuna here each year. They are all caught by rod and reel and once the quota is caught, that's it. They are humanely killed and it's a very sustainable fishery.
@beckymurphy2009 Bluefin tuna are not a "very sustainable fishery". Don't get me wrong I'd catch the hell out of them too if I knew how to fish. But the species is circling the drain as a result of seine netting and poor management driven by the Japanese paying ungodly sums for them. If everyone caught them on rod and reel there would most certainly be a lot less caught.
King Crab bring in the most money! and I have met a fisherman at the port once he claims that the 700 thousand or so isn't enough after his bills! I wonder if he gambles...a lot?!
Dredging, dynamiting, over fishing, trawling and basically lax laws is what is ruining the fish stocks.
Hard to catch a friggin eating size pollack from the beach/piers because the trawlers are moving in too close now.
I would love to experience the rush of catching a bluefin but I would have it tagged and released personally, no matter what cash i would be letting go.
@bostnma not true at all, there are 326 licensed commercial fisherman in P.E.I. The season there is open for only 7 days and they are allowed to only keep one a day, and only 101 of those 326 fulfilled the quota of 7. This particular fish was caught during open season so they sold it.The Canadian government has really put pressure on the fisherman and now 3rd and 4th generation fisherman can't make a living.Source: I personally know the captain that chartered Dennis on this episode.
@jbasketball410 Maybe you misread my comment? I'm all for commercial tuna fishing by small boats on rod and reel. I got my Giant BFT this year while cod fishing in 300 ft off Provincetown MA . It hit a 20 oz cod jig on the bottom, go figure....
yeah what a hero . man versus fish . sorry man +boat+guy with hook/spike versus fish . how old was that fish ?? just to end up caught by that tough guy .
Bro you have no idea what you are talking about . man, boat and large modern hooks are often times no match for fish of that size . Dennis caught that fish stand up .that fish can and does swim as fast as 60 miles an hour and was over 700 pounds . that is a true sport wake up and quit hugging the tree smart guy .
BRO true sport?????? i think not you were chasing that fish with the boat and using huge gear you should people should be strung up for killing a fish like that what didnt you let it go to continue its life??? i despise people like you typical dumb ass yanks!!!!!!!!!!
Think of the jobs and money created by those rigs? That captain has a family to feed, the men who handcraft those reels have families to feed, the people who built that boat have families to feed. This fish was caught based on strict regulations brought forth by years of research and wildlife biologists. It IS a sport, It IS a way of life, for more than just that fish, or the man who caught it. Get over yourself and sell your smart car.
hey buddy its only one fish, id like to see you catch a blue fin of that size on stand up... you would cry, guaranteed it is a true sport and darkwolf919 is right sell your smart car. buy a fishing rod.
at least we have a good time killin it haha, but seriously i bet uve eaten plenty of hamburgers (cows) in your life so dont bitch about a way of life people eat fish get over it.
im not against fishing, but i think because of the age of the fish and the fact that it has survived so long, it should be respected. its an old timer. let it go. you caught a big fish. why kill it? to prove you caught a big fish?
Exactly but the bluefin has been hunted to near commercial extinction across the oceans of the world. 75 years ago bluefin over 1000lbs were commonplace. The current biomass is a mere fraction of the historic population.
