@ 02.06 she lets fly a 'duff' note but for her 1st real go at 'rock' shes not half bad aah now i get it no 2 the springsteen 'duet' 'Dont want no niggah betch conquering rock n roll' God damn what kinda country is THIS - Cleetus watch em hogs ya hear and u will marry that gal 'but sh'es mah sister Pah' Shutit boi was good enuff 4 me n ure mother now thems hogs a risin.........................................................................................
I didn't especially care for this song when I first got into Donna Summer a few years ago, but it has grown on me in a big way. Initially, I was put off by the cheesy sounding opening but the chorus is what is really catchy about this song and makes it extraordinary. Maybe the rest of the song sounding a little dated (for lack of a better word) is the reason why you never hear it on the radio today, and that's a shame. This is a great live rendition.
I saw her in concert at THE VENUE THEATRE @ the HORSHOE CASINO in HAMMOND,IND. last AUG 2009. I'm sorry she didn't sing "THE WANDERER" in the concert. She's still touring with "CRAYONS" songs. This isn't in her repertoire anymore I guess. Thanx for posting.
This groundbreaking new wave/rock infused song peaked at #3 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. Very good charted song considering Donna left disco and went to pop/rock 1 year after the album Bad Girls was released. Donna was also the 1st artist to be signed to David Geffen's label ''Geffen Records'' back in 1980. She was paid in advance 1.5 million dollars per album. Back then that was a groundbreaking record deal. I hope she get's in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this time. She deserves it.
I love how Donna can change and disguise her vocals on her recordings and always come out perfect. She is one of a kind. I remember hearing this song on regular airplay in 1980 on 1580 KDAY AM stereo.
I use to dig this song when it was released. This came out at the dusk of her reign as Disco Queen (you hear a little new wave/techno sound in this song). She admitted in an interview that during this time she was burned out from work. She was in high demand back then. She released She Works Hard For The Money about 3 years after The Wanderer
her voice was fluid, beautiful, can't say enough good things. Practically only singer who sounds same in concert/radio. She deserves wayyyyyy more credit.
Okay, so I'm sitting here and I find myself singing this song in my head. I have no idea why as I have not heard this song in years. I think, ah, let me go see if somebody has put it on youtube. Thanks summer16! As I was listening I could see my little 45rpm record player spinning.
@leath1969 I heard this on yahoo radio 2days ago i for gotten how this was one of my favs in the 80's..thanks for the post..kinda wondered if this is a prince written cut..
One of her best albums, pure 80's rock fun. Love "The Wanderer", what's up with the hair? Well we have all been there! I want to see her do the song live again:)
Donna rarely performs this classic and in fact I haven't seen her do it in any of her concerts or t.v. appearances in recent years. It's become a forgotten hit. I looked it up on Casey Kasem's Top 100 songs of 1981 and it finished at #56 and right below that finishing at #55 was another diva with "I'M COMING OUT," none other than DIANA ROSS. Now these two ladies were the top divas of the early 80's.
hey guys, i know this was a hit and Donna Summer rules the disco bitchfest but its just not really top of my Donna Summer pops. Her hair IS a mess but she is she the top diva and i do love her so. Cold love was easily better than this and i totally agree with Mikerocken The Wanderer does "borrow" from With Yout Love. Chill x
Excuse me but the Wanderer was a huge number three for three weeks hit and sold a million copies... Its a solid cool song... Actually do you hear a fimilar riff borrowed from the song "With Your Love"from the 1978 soundtrack thank god its friday...
I agree. THE WANDERER showed some of Donna's vocal hidden talents. People who were into disco only could not see any further than their own noses. THE WANDERER is a great song and Donna still rocks!
This is not a bad track at all. Eurodeluxe must have not been alive during the 80s. Hey Dude, its been over 20 years. Lets judge what you are currently wearing 20 years from now! Donna's hairdo was a huge fashion style (just look at old any repeat of the character Pam on Dallas). This song was a medium sized hit~ it was the evolution of her music incorporating an 80s synths sound!
It was arguably the first New Wave major hit - Rolling Stone said so - a new sound - very synth and "spare" compared to the big orchestrations of 70's rock and disco - think Billy Joel's "It's Still Rock and Roll To Me", and Pat Benatar's "We Live For Love" - dance rock, it was called at the time.
Even the great Miss Gaines cannot save this awful track. This started the demise of her career, not to mention that hairdo (hairdon't). She knows its pants , she could n't care less. Bye bye career! x
why did any one think she was a man?..

Although a commerical success this proves once and for all why Donna Summer belong in the Rock Hall of Fame.
Also time to elect Chicago, Journey Foreginer, Pat Bentar among thre other greats of that late 70's/early 80's era.

Slapping some cheesy off-the-shelf synth chords on top of a bad song doesn't automatically give it an "80s" sound.
