While America can be described as a melting pot (ie integration) Canada is renown for being a cultural mosaic. Quebec is far to economically important to leave Canada and the change would hurt Canada more than Quebec, think about the tariffs and duties which would have to be paid, including a higher rate on resources and services. Quebec has everything it needs to be self-sufficient albeit it would lose a chunk of its GDP. this isn't a game, this isn't even up for debate anymore...

Plus, many large corporations would switch leave Quebec out of fear of political & economic instability. Quebec might have the 44th largest economy in the world behind Norway, but you you still need $16.6 billion in transfer payments from Ottawa to get by.

The criteria was not language but religion. The Irish had no problem getting into French schools prior to 1970 as they were Catholic, hence we've had prominent francophone politicians with names like Johnston and Ryan in Quebec. Many Qubecers were heading to northern Ontario looking for work and good, tolerant Anglos in Ontario felt threatened and immediately banned French schools. Let's compare the number of French schools in Ontario to the number of English in Quebec. Ontario for a population of 542,340 Francophones, approx: 600 schools public & private.

As for your crazy allegations about fraud by the YES side in 1995, if there were any truth to them someone would have lodged an official complaint. The only complaint lodged against the YES side was that an unusually high number of NO votes were rejected in predominately Anglo areas. This has been proven false. Yes, it's true that most of the rejected votes in Westmount were NO votes but that is because 98% of all votes were NO votes and it was well within the statistical norms.

It has also been proved that the federal government completely ignored the spending limits in the Quebec referendum laws. There are over 350 English primary and secondary schools in Quebec and that is not counting colleges like Dawson or universities like McGill and Concordia. There are English TV and radio station, newspapers, theaters, libraries... EVERYTHING. Most employers want people who are bilingual, this affects uni-lingual francophones as well as anglophones. There is nothing even close to ethnic cleansing going on. To make such ridiculous claims is to insult people who have really suffered oppression.

While America can be described as a melting pot (ie integration) Canada is renown for being a cultural mosaic. It is impossible not to integrate to some extent but it takes time for generations of immigrants to overcome language barriers, financial problems etc.

Hydro is more expensive in Quebec than Ontario because of federal mingling, this means Quebec doesn't make as much off its Hydro as it should, there are plenty of other examples, such as the oil refineries which are losing jobs to the Americans because Albertans don't want to keep their own wealth. Take it from a Scots-Quebecer its best if Quebec stays in Canada, on both ends.

Quebec is far to economically important to leave Canada and the change would hurt Canada more than Quebec, think about the tariffs and duties which would have to be paid, including a higher rate on resources and services. Quebec has everything it needs to be self-sufficient albeit it would lose a chunk of its GDP. this isn't a game, this isn't even up for debate anymore...

Plus, many large corporations would switch leave Quebec out of fear of political & economic instability. I suppose most of Quebec's corporate power would have remained, the French language laws went too far even though I agree with the protection of the French language it is an oppressive piece of legislation which caused Quebec's Anglo (and wealthier) corporations to fire most of its experts and veterans to be replaced by Francophones, Sun Life took a heavy hit from this. I do think road signs should be bilingual though since it isn't like having to read shakespear in Chinese.

After an initial exploration by Giovanni Caboto in 1497, British and French expeditions explored and settled along the Atlantic coast, if we do not include the early Norse settlements in what is now Newfoundland. France ceded almost all its own North American colonies in 1763 after the Seven Years War with Quebec retaining its French identity.

The criteria was not language but religion. The Irish had no problem getting into French schools prior to 1970 as they were Catholic, hence we've had prominent francophone politicians with names like Johnston and Ryan in Quebec. In 1970, religion was removed from the school system and the restrictions as well. So the idea that this is an example of Quebec intolerance is as all of The DidiM's claims a load of garbage.

Rights aren't rights if they can be taken away. What Trudeau did was wrong in every sense. It was wrong in the sense of law enforcement, in fact I would call his performance criminally reckless or at best dangerously incompetent. And it was wrong in a larger political sense, he violated the rights of thousands of innocent people. Many Qubecers were heading to northern Ontario looking for work and good, tolerant Anglos in Ontario felt threatened and immediately banned French schools. Let's compare the number of French schools in Ontario to the number of English in Quebec. Ontario for a population of 542,340 Francophones, approx: 600 schools public & private.
Quebec for a population of at minimum 2,000,000.

It was never taken over by Hydro-Quebec, idiot! The two main companies taken over by Hydro Quebec were Montreal Light, Heat & Power and Shawinigan Water & Power. I can't say I know much about them but judging by their English only names I doubt much French was heard in their boardrooms, well maybe the cleaning staff.

As for your crazy allegations about fraud by the YES side in 1995, if there were any truth to them someone would have lodged an official complaint. The only complaint lodged against the YES side was that an unusually high number of NO votes were rejected in predominately Anglo areas. This has been proven false. Yes, it's true that most of the rejected votes in Westmount were NO votes but that is because 98% of all votes were NO votes and it was well within the statistical norms.

But the federal government never believed that provincial laws applied to them. You just need to look at all the criminal acts perpetrated by the RCMP in Quebec in the 1970s. There are over 350 English primary and secondary schools in Quebec and that is not counting colleges like Dawson or universities like McGill and Concordia. There are English TV and radio station, newspapers, theaters, libraries... EVERYTHING. Most employers want people who are bilingual, this affects uni-lingual francophones as well as anglophones. There is nothing even close to ethnic cleansing going on. To make such ridiculous claims is to insult people who have really suffered oppression.

PAST GRIEVANCES: All we need to do is look at Quebec society 50 years ago and the distribution of wealth along ethnic lines (English mansions in Westmount and French slums in St-Henri) to see that Quebec was a colonial society. In many companies even the foreman level was reserved for Anglos only, never mind top executives. We've overcome this type of discrimination and there is no one still talking about this in the sovereignist movement which shows how disconnected you are with the present.
