On this date in 1960 {Feb. 22nd} "Greenfields" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 4 weeks} and spent 20 weeks in the Top 100, was also the groups debut record on the charts.
Ranked 13th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1960 chart...
The Vogues' covered version in 1969 peaked at #92...
This song was made in the predictions the Brothers Four made about how the economy would fail in 2008. Now that this has happened, prepare for a million years of jello in everyone's pants. This will be a frightening time, and I pray that anyone who can run away from jello in ones pants then good. If you can't then JELLO!
This song takes me back to a simpler time in my life when everything moved at a slower pace,it was not the hurry up I want it yesterday attitude, it was a time of respect for other people and their property, a time where most people did business with a handshake , a time when the whole family sat down and ate dinner together. it was a time of an innoconce in this country that has long since been lost. I was 7 years old when this song came out and it is still one of my favorites.
@SUPERCLYDER I know just how you feel. Sixty-three now...and how it was seems like an awful long time ago. We used to talk to each other face to face. No one seemed to do better than anyone else and everyone was happy with that. Seems a long time ago....no one has the time to go back, and fewer and fewer remember that time.
@clarkzie100 I see these comments comparing beautiful music of past decades on any video I watch, whether it be Tony Bennett or Sting, with the "music of today". They are lovely tracks of their time and let's not ruin their sanctity by putting them aside artists who cater to an entirely different target audience in a different age :)
@piersquare2 well said;my great-grandfathers differed in opinion through their own circumstances;you see 1 of them knocked up an irish migrant girl in manchester, but my great-grand uncle was a naval captain in wwII,so each to their own,i hope thay all have peace in heaven
@piersquare2 Thank you! I couldn't have said it better myself. Every single track on youtube has silly posts bemoaning the "music of today". Every age has the sublime and superficial.
Lyrics of this enchanting song were translated in Russian, and it became a very popular camping song. We would sing it around campfires, and it came as a great surprise to me to learn that it was an American song. Really, how could this beautiful, soulful song be American? It is so much Russian by its nature! But then again, it came as surprise to me that Americans love hiking and camping just as much as Russians do.
I've had this song stuck in my head since my aunt played it on her old record player. Very cool. Had to look it up and see what it was called. :) Thank you for posting this.
melancholic song played by the beach. A beach empty on the one side but full on the other side..contradictions that seize to be percieved as contradictions . . .
this one very well prompted me to learn the guitar and emulate the song's progression,l remember, and it was so impossible to sound like it then. Many years later, as l waited for my voice to mellow...l still sounded like a tomcat ...so l just let the others sing it,with me in the shadows and my guitar.. yeah, the guitar part l did well, at least, thats what they tell me. nubayann?
For Christmas 1964 my father gave me and my sister a tape recorder. This was the song recorded on the tape that came with the recorder. My father said,it was JFK-s favorite. It sure is mine, forever.
@sandortecsy This album was my father's favourite, and when Dad came home on weekends, we'd all gather around the hi-fi to listen to the Brothers Four! It was the highlight of our week!

Limeliters sang a song w/ a similar theme. I believe it was called "Once Was The Time of Man" At least those were some of the lyrics.
"Once there were trees & a river. Once there was grass where you stand. Once there were songs about right instead of wrong. Once was the time of man.
We heard the (rumbling?)of thunder. We saw the cloud rise at dawn, then came the rain as we watched & prayed in vain. Then all was still all was gone..."
One of my favorites. I picked up the 45RPM over 25 years ago. Before that, I would hear it now and then through the years. It always haunted me and the DJ's who played it failed to mention who sang it. Finally, one of them did.
I love this song even when I was young then till now. Back those days we don't have TV and all we have is radio. I love the lyrics and sat next to our radio and write words for words until I got all the lyrics correct. Then one day I finally I got all the notes in my head and all the lyrics and start singing along with the four brothers. I was so happy! I missed our farm and long to go back but it's so far away separated by thousand of miles of ocean and land. Those are memories of long ago.
GREENFIELDS ARE GONE NOW! Gone because of all those modernizations brought by technologies! In exchange of all the conveniences we have now is the simple life that we used to enjoy before.... Sad, so sad!

GREENFIELDS. Reminiscence. I sang this song at the Moncada town plaza during the Plebeian Axademy foundation anniversary first night in 1971(March). It was our last year in Plebeian. I dedicate this song to Engr. Cleto Obillo, our classmate and my good friend of 43 long years. He loved the farm, settled with his wife Mina ( an Ilocana from Buguey, Cagayan) in Aringin, Moncada, and raised their children Marc, Eugene, and Erika there - in the greenfields. - NORBERTO L. MERCADO
Thanks for posting the lyrics. A very old favourite that my brother who passed away used to sing and play on the guitar. It was a great memory to sing along.
