Diesel is really expensive where I live, it is $0.70 more per gallon over regular gas. That combined with VW's bad reliability and constant repairs puts it over my budget. With Prius I am worried about batteries going after 3-4 years. That is a major expense. Smart Fortwo chews engines like no tomorrow and uses premium fuel. In the end I think Ford Focus or Prius would be the cheapest to own, overall.
...The process to make a battery that powers the Prius is dangerous to the environment. You have to replace the battery every 8 or so years. The battery you just had to replace is more dangerous to our environment than leaving a V-8 engine on, and burning gasoline for 8 years straight. Figure out how that makes sense. -_-
@pixartist This has alwasy been one of my many issues with the Prius - its styling. It looks horrendous! It looks more like a 1980s concept car. Also, fuel economy wise, the Prius is beaten hands down by the European VW Golf diesel. tdi's are great. They are a lot cleaner than gasoline, last a WHOLE lot longer than a gas engine. Plus, they still are a lot of fun to drive as compared to hybrids which take away all the fun
I don't have a problem with the prius besides they're ugly as sin and always drive slow preventing me from driving at a comfortable pace; I have a problem with the drivers of them who are egotistical liberal 'eco-warriors' who get on everybody else's nerves by thinking they're 'helping the environment' and better than everyone else on earth. If you want to 'save the environment' go reform china. If you think full size Ford pollutes, look at China. They pollute more than any other Nation by far.
The problem is the Prius is made in a factory with parts sourced from component suppliers around the world, and then shipped to the customers home country. Unlike other cars that I guess just appear in the show room overnight, having been created by fairies out of pixie dust. Modern shipping is so efficient it only takes a few gallons of fuel to perform the whole Prius logistics operation, alas I've no idea how much pixie dust you need to create a Hummer
Too bad you failed to take into account that having all of those cars following each other so closely like that, you have taken a lot of wind resistance out of the equation. And another result of following that close would be the drivers in 2-4th position, would all be adjusting the gas pedal back and forth to keep proper distance, which is another thing that would cause a difference in mile per gallon estimates.
I'm an american and have never been a fan of European cars. But I have always liked the VW TDI's. I don't know why America doesnt have more diesel powered cars. Diesels are extremely fuel efficient and run forever. TDI wins in my book.
@deusexification Your ignorant. A TDI will do 130mph (210kmh). How fast do you need to go? The Highest speed limit i've seen here in the America is 75mph.(120kmh) With all the new emission restrictions on the new diesel engines they dont polute anymore than a gas engine. Battery acid is alot more polutant than gas or diesel. Do some research before you post a comment.
@Reapers261 - Toyota innova diesel top out at speed 150-160 kph with difficulty , toyota Innova petrol 185 kmph . that 25kmph makes lot of difference on the highway. Diesel non polluting ? quotes from the internet
1. Diesel particulates are known to include a host of PAH's which are known carcinogens.
2. diesel engines get better mileage and thus produce less CO2, but they can produce up to 400 times more particulate. There is need for quality fuel and diesel particulate filter
@deusexification I dont know what a "innova" is. We are discusing the Jetta TDI. You are refering to older diesel cars that dont have to abide by the new emission standard. The new Diesel cars give off no more polution than a gas engine thanks to the filters as you said.
@Reapers261 u talk about battery pollution. How many electronic components are being disposed daily? how many cell phone have u changed till now? How many CD's have u burnt? How many cells have u used for ur remote control toys, camera's etc..... u talk of pollution? Prius has battery life of over 10 years (warranty of 10 years). there has not even been a single battery change in vehicle lifetime till date. also batteries can recycled
@deusexification Your right about the battery. I know that Toyota recycles their Hybrid batteries. They have to because of all the toxic materials that are used in batteries( cadmium, cobalt, lead).
@Reapers261 diesel cars are also more expensive and the cost are justified if u drive over 50 kms per day. average cost of a diesel car is 1.5 lakhs (Rupees 150k) more than a petrol car. difference in fuel cost Rs. 10 (diesel being cheaper) Those who buy a diesel car and don't drive it much are wasting their investment. Diesel cars also require more maintenance and are noisy. petrol cars are smooth and more comfortable for long drives
@deusexification More maintenance? Diesel engines have less moveing parts then a gas engine. They cost more but they last longer because they are built useing stronger materials and they rev alot lower then gas engines. The older diesels are noisy but the new ones are comparable to gas engines. Stop refering to older diesel engines this video is about the newer diesel's.
43 mpg. diesel . 47 toyota. for me. i still get diesel. sporty torquey reliable and known well. the hybrid. city is good yes. not highway. my car is always on highways.
@deusexification diesels actually require less maintenance. my dad has a 2006 jetta tdi and all he really does is change the oil, the oil filter and fuel filter, and he's done over 100,000 miles since he got it over a year ago. and the diesel is only loud at idle, when its moving, you can't tell the difference if its a gas or not and they still drive smooth. and who cares if diesels are loud, they sound like power.
The VW Jetta was 2005 ? Why not a newer version ? The Jetta won 2 of 3 tests, although diesel costs more, in the long run the Prius will need the expensive battery's replaced. The VW is easily the winner, I'd like to see how much the Prius would cost to run 300k.
how can you compare a smart with a jetta? is half the size!!! for what offers meaning space/consumption , smart is a piece of shit. and diesel fuel is cheaper in europe, so your precious toyota is not number one.
So if you travel on the highway a lot, you need a TDI. If you travel around the city a lot then you need a Prius. The smart is ok either way but a waste of money for what you get, and the ford is just a fail.
They should make an test on same things but with 3-4 ppl in the car. I bet Toyota will loose it caz of weeknes of its engine. Caz moms who buy it in first place always drive it whit kids.
The Volkswagen Jetta TDI does not get better city and highway mpg's than the Toyota Prius. Get that in your head. However, the Toyota Prius only gets 5 mpg better than the Clean Diesel Jetta TDI.
of course not but im saying fuel economy is no new thing but people are creating newer more expensive ways to get good gas milage, i read in an encyclopedia about a car in the early 1940's that got just as good of gas milage as a prius, 45 mpg and, suprize it wasnt a hybrid! we dont need all this expenesive equipment to get gas milage and we dont need all the plastic that we have on cars because to produce all that pollutes more than a engine will
wtf diesel is mor expensive ha ha, it is a bi-product of petrol so how is this and the whole show is wrong stupid crap and my mondeo gets 65 mpg so this is cock
i have a comparison for you, compare a prius with a 1977 datson wich got 50 mpg highway, was built better than the prius and even looked better than the prius not to mention was made 30 years before th prius and averaged 5 mpg better than the prius. and im a ford guy who isnt a fan of imports
People seem to forget that every year cars are required to be more safe. Your 77 Datson doesn't have the hundreds of extra pounds of structural steel to meet current impact standards, nor does it have a bunch of airbars, nor does it have a bigger engine to produce the extra power required to move all that.
Since they are talking about carbon footprint, ppl should realize that manufacturing a Prius with all its batteries is an incredibly inefficient, carbon intensive process. The mining of the nickel (for the batteries) is a process that makes Alberta's oilsands projest look like a saint.
Now some Prius fanatic is gonna get all uppity about his "morally conscious" yet misguided car choice.:)
The Prius has one nickel metal hydride battery, not to mention most industrial nickel is recycled. It's good to know what you're talking about. And even if what you said was true, it still wouldn't outweigh the carbon dioxide emission problem.
The Jetta is built in Mexico junk! It may be fun but it is a piece of shit. Get a Golf TDI. They are much better than the Jettas and than all of these other cars.
i think we shouldn't invest much in "great mileage" in the first place. the reason is simple. more mileage means more remote places becoming easily accessible and people would go out even further out. as history has shown any place human sets feet into, the wild life dies. nature gets polluted.
with fuel such luxury was at least not affordable. now we have to forget those beautiful trees and more roads are gonna be taking their places. with roads come malls and appartments, etc :((
Well there is a clear winner even if you just get rid of the rubbish. Smaer is a loser because it's too small for a family and isn't the most economical anyway (which is shit).
Focus is old tech and therefore shit.
The prius is hideously overpriced but even ignoring that what happens when you have 4 people and luggage on board? Then the prius is gutless and thirsty as hell making it shit.
plus the prius is expensive to buy and it has many toxic materials in its batteries etc, so harms the environment in the long run.
a 30% of an average cars carbon footprint is in manufacture, so keeping an old car is better for environment even if it polutes anywhere up to 30% more when running(2x as old).
It is capitalism that is really to blame for everything.
@hunghuge12 they're all 2008's, except the 2005 jetta, thats old diesel technology... they should have atleast had the 2006 body style with the BRM diesel engine.
@JAPANTUNER100 It's called English. It's taught in quite a lot of schools. Also you seem to think I care if you take me seriously? I bet you love the smell of your own farts too.
@hunghuge12 hahahahahahahah cool story bro, what chapter do you shut up? If you think I am referring to the language itself, you are truly a clueless man. I was stating the fact that you don't need to use the word "shit" in every sentence.
@JAPANTUNER100 It's also a fact that you don't need to post pointless comments when you really have nothing to say. I'm still waiting for you to point out what part of my post was invalid and why. I guess it will be a long wait.
@JAPANTUNER100 You see we're back to that English thing again. Not looking at the Bora's faults doesn't make anything else I typed any less valid. I didn't say it was ideal or perfect - just that it has to be the winner by default.
Infact you calling my comments invalid is invalid because of this. If you can't understand that go ask someone - maybe your teacher - what I mean and I'm sure they will explain it nice and slowly for you.
@hunghuge12 how would it be a "valid" comparison you typed if you don't even display the faults of the Jetta, you can't just automatically say it's the winner by default when you don't carefully view it's faults.
@JAPANTUNER100 Like I said - that doesn't invalidate anything I typed. From the dictionary;
Invalidate - to render weak or ineffective, as an argument.
ignoring any downsides the bora may have would only invalidate what I put if it rendered it weak or ineffective. It doesn't and wouldn't so my points are valid and you need to go back to school.
@hunghuge12 maybe instead of telling me to go back to school, haven't you thought that its a possibility that your comparison is now "invalid" because of the lack of evidence or proof provided
@JAPANTUNER100 Are you high? If you really can't grasp what something means you should stop using the word. I've spent more than enough time explaining this now so if you want more you can look it up for yourself.
@hunghuge12 Oh my god you really are a clueless idiot. >.> what I am saying is that due to the lack of evidence or proof provided that the Jetta has no major faults, your argument/comparison is weakened and ineffective (Invalid) If you were to fairly compare, you should've displayed faults of all the cars then pick a winner
If you throw in the Mexican built quality of the Jetta TDI, and factor in the fact that one lives in the city, service & maintenance of a Diesel in N America, wonder where the TDI would stand in the real world.
well obiously the prius or the smart car makes you look like a fag if your a guy and driving one... focus is nice but bad gas mileage, compared to the three, so its clear that the tdi is the best...
And lets not forget, the Jetta TDI was 4 years old when they did this test, the others were brand-new! And whoever says diesels are boring to drive is smoking crack, seriously.
None of the smart's stats matter anymore. When Mercedes/Renault/Nissan created a partnership they upgraded the fortwo's engine (among other aspects that people complained about). Through real world testing in Europe it gets 56mpg US. This is without reducing performance.
The whole spec sheet is available at Daimler's news site:
@GarrettKeetley Perhaps you could look the specs up instead of arguing with me because you are sadly mistaken. The SRT Challenger has a 6.1 litre engine! The huge size means it makes gobs of torque! Much more torque than a turbo 1.9 litre!
@surethang27 This is almost an unfair argument. the 6.1 liter engine only makes 190 more ft./lbs, than the 1.9 turbo diesel. Compare the Challengers engine to say a Cummins or Duramax for a fair challenge, and, well, the diesels kick your Challengers ass all day long.
@passngas2 Honestly I had a valid point which was, "why not buy a base challenger for the same money?" Then I got into a ridiculous argument with a retard
1) As far as I know, diesel is more expensive in the US (right?). Here in germany, diesel is 20 eurocent cheaper AND the diesel gets better mpg compared to a petrol car
2) Next time they should test the diesel version of the smart, which uses even less fuel
You know, the smart gets horrific mileage for it's claimed virtues... If I want a tiny car that gets ridiculous mileage and isn't the safest on earth, I'll go for a '97 Toyota Tercel. They can be had for as little as $1400, get similar mileage to the smart, seat 4 (5 if they're small), have trunks, use readily available tires, run on regular unleaded, and are cheap to insure.
@Piro42 The Edmond testing is flawed. They tested the cars in several environments for short times, because of which, none of the cars adapted well to new situations.
For example, the majority off smart owners get 45-55 MPG (actually recorded btw), and that's real world driving and not some stupid road trip.
The Toyota is the best choice and although the diesel are there, the noise is horrible, more expensive if they get problems and petrol engines are sometimes even more reliable than diesel. In addition, the 'example' of the best choice is 'the rest of car makers' are now trying to develop hybrid engines.
also the diesel is an easy 300,000+ mile car because of the diesel's known reliability, so if the goverement recalled the ridiculus tax on diesel fuel it would become cheaper than gasoline again and we would have a clear and undeniable winner
America's favorite gas/electric? More like gay cali's fav car lol. I'm not a VW fan, but I'll take the TDI above all those cars, and the smart over a prius.
my first car was a jetta and I will forever be a fan, you can't beat them for the price. I don't like the new body, however, the old school vw's are always the best.
but in the long run,, i read that the batteries in the prius cost about $3,000.00 us to replace and they only lasts 3 yrs, soo who's saving $,,,, now ???
Well you shoud revise your reading. Prius 2 batteries warranty is 8 years and Prius 3'ones is 5 years and no one had to change the batteries so far ...
The thing is toyota has admitted it has problems, almost all its products are involved with issues, some quite serious, going back to 1998, and certainly the worse part is that toyota intentionally kept these issues from its customers,in effect making suckers of its customers and continuing the myth of no defects
why in god's name does the smart need premium?? it's 70 horse from a 1 liter engine. that's like 140 horse from a 2 liter. you shouldn't need premium for that. it's a bunch of bullshit.
@creamyfilling102 It doesn't need premium. smart only recommends premium to extend the life and performance of the engine way into high mileage, and to protect from engine knock. Many of smart owners run 87 with no problem.
Diesel is cheaper than premium in NJ, so if you did the testing driving from New York to Philadelphia the TDI would have better rankings then the Smart, and possibly the Priass. The Jetta TDI is awesome, I drive a 2002. Plus with TDI you don't have to worry about sticky gas pedals!
March 17, 9:03 p.m. - The NewYork Prius investigation preliminary results are in - and......brake is 0% accelerator pedal 99.9% - The local Sheriff has all the details and copies of the investigators evidence. He seems rather unimpressed that there is not more to the story according to witnesses of the investigation
If you buy a prius you make a statement that you´ve got no idea about cars! If you want to do something for the enviroment but not making a suicide behind the wheel buy a golf or jetta diesel! If you buy a prius you will damage the enviroment even more. Why? Becouse it take a huge amount of energy and resources to produce this car! Espacially the batteries! They aren´t recycleable, you need to change them every 3 years, you need to ship them and to produce them you need toxic chemicals.
Hybrids suck, gas cars suck, we should make cars that need organic things, and, we throw our trash there, the car doesnt contaminate and we have a much better car
You could cut my balls off and I still wouldn't drive a Prius. I hate FWd cars, but of these I would pick the Jetta since it's the most powerful, the engine will last the longest with least maintenance and is best for the environment, they didn't tell you in the video that gas is worse for the air then diesel emissions.
But who cares? I got a GMC Sierra V8 that I drive, gotta love the V8 rumble and it gets 20mpg in the city because of it's standard trans, Prius only has a pussy automatic.
Wow. No clear winner. The Prius gets best overall MPG, the lowest greenhouse gas emissions, and the lowest fuel cost for the trip. The Jetta gets to claim a very slightly higher number for MPG on backroads and highway... but gets creamed in the city by the Prius. Looks to me like the clear winner is the Prius. I don't have one, BTW. My 1988 Chevy Sprint Metro (EPA 55/60) does better than all of them. But I'm not sure it could beat the Prius on the 75mph highway run. But I prefer to drive at 65.
what a load of rubbish them figures are terrable my 306 hdi can pull 65 mpg on a run ive clocked well over 100 miles on just 7 litres on fuel 870 miles on a full tank not bad for a 9 year old car with 184.000 miles on the clock still going strong lol
One important thing to mention here... the Jetta TDI is actually FUN TO DRIVE! It has quite punchy speed when you floor it. The other 3 do not. That makes the Jetta the clear best option.
@tnralliart2600 Fun to drive doesn't mean crap if it's always breaking down, which VWs are infamous for. Also, factor in the cost to buy a Jetta TDI, and it becomes evident it's a losing situation if you're after saving money.
Yes, as long as you don't get the VW well known reliability problems, like I did. Then it's not fun. Granted my 08 Prius is not exciting to drive, but I have a good looking wife so I spend less time on the road and more time at home. That's more exciting.
@12valvepower1 Actually believe it or not the Golf and the Jetta sedan weight he same, I know that VW web site says differrnetly but I worked test driving them and there is seriously a 10 lbs difference and the jetta is lighter.
Why? There are speed limits, what good is it to by a car that can drive faster then the speed limit? If all cars can reach the speed limits, than i'd look at stuff other than which one is the fastest to decide which car to buy, things you can actually use without being a danger on the rod and risking fines.
Not saying there is anything wrong with a Jetta but buying a car just because it pulls quickly is stupid and smells of compensating behavior...
@SSTTEEAALLTTHH Two words... it's fun. It's got nothing to do with the size of your dick, but if you're gonna buy a car that's great on fuel (none of these cars are exactly chevy V8's) you might as well still be able to enjoy it. Besides, I don't think the Jetta is better "just because it pulls quickly"; I agree if someone bought a car 100% of that reason then they're an idiot but that's not at all my position.
The most disappointing car in this test for me was the smart.. considering it's micro golf cart-like size and sluggish 3 banger engine, it really should get better mileage.. It only gets a few more mpg's than our 07' mini.. and our car is more fun to drive, safer, faster, has a back seat, etc.
The Prius is a Hybrid but it is NOT a bloody diesel, that's the main reason why all others score so well compared to the Prius on a longer trip. Are we silly or what are we comparing here? This comparisson is absolute nonsense... Look at the figures in town, there's where the Toyota sweeps all others away...
I have a smart car and first car off a red light leaving the crowd and driving down the interstate weaving and passing at 90 + MPH ( I had it up to 97 and 100 a few times on smooth road its fine) I averaged 43 MPG!!!
when I drive it easy I have seen 52 MPG

Battery acid is alot more polutant than gas or diesel. Do some research before you post a comment.
Reapers261 10 months ago
@Reapers261 - Toyota innova diesel top out at speed 150-160 kph with difficulty , toyota Innova petrol 185 kmph . that 25kmph makes lot of difference on the highway. Diesel non polluting ? quotes from the internet
1. Diesel particulates are known to include a host of PAH's which are known carcinogens.
2. diesel engines get better mileage and thus produce less CO2, but they can produce up to 400 times more particulate. There is need for quality fuel and diesel particulate filter
deusexification 10 months ago
@deusexification I dont know what a "innova" is. We are discusing the Jetta TDI. You are refering to older diesel cars that dont have to abide by the new emission standard. The new Diesel cars give off no more polution than a gas engine thanks to the filters as you said.
Reapers261 10 months ago
@Reapers261 u talk about battery pollution. How many electronic components are being disposed daily? how many cell phone have u changed till now? How many CD's have u burnt? How many cells have u used for ur remote control toys, camera's etc..... u talk of pollution? Prius has battery life of over 10 years (warranty of 10 years). there has not even been a single battery change in vehicle lifetime till date. also batteries can recycled
deusexification 10 months ago
@deusexification Your right about the battery. I know that Toyota recycles their Hybrid batteries. They have to because of all the toxic materials that are used in batteries( cadmium, cobalt, lead).
Reapers261 10 months ago
@Reapers261 diesel cars are also more expensive and the cost are justified if u drive over 50 kms per day. average cost of a diesel car is 1.5 lakhs (Rupees 150k) more than a petrol car. difference in fuel cost Rs. 10 (diesel being cheaper) Those who buy a diesel car and don't drive it much are wasting their investment. Diesel cars also require more maintenance and are noisy. petrol cars are smooth and more comfortable for long drives
deusexification 10 months ago
@deusexification More maintenance? Diesel engines have less moveing parts then a gas engine. They cost more but they last longer because they are built useing stronger materials and they rev alot lower then gas engines. The older diesels are noisy but the new ones are comparable to gas engines. Stop refering to older diesel engines this video is about the newer diesel's.

@deusexification diesels actually require less maintenance. my dad has a 2006 jetta tdi and all he really does is change the oil, the oil filter and fuel filter, and he's done over 100,000 miles since he got it over a year ago. and the diesel is only loud at idle, when its moving, you can't tell the difference if its a gas or not and they still drive smooth. and who cares if diesels are loud, they sound like power.

i have a comparison for you, compare a prius with a 1977 datson wich got 50 mpg highway, was built better than the prius and even looked better than the prius not to mention was made 30 years before th prius and averaged 5 mpg better than the prius. and im a ford guy who isnt a fan of imports
curtmaster3001 1 year ago
@curtmaster3001

Now some Prius fanatic is gonna get all uppity about his "morally conscious" yet misguided car choice.:)
rottenbyron 1 year ago
@rottenbyron
The Prius has one nickel metal hydride battery, not to mention most industrial nickel is recycled. It's good to know what you're talking about. And even if what you said was true, it still wouldn't outweigh the carbon dioxide emission problem.

i think we shouldn't invest much in "great mileage" in the first place. the reason is simple. more mileage means more remote places becoming easily accessible and people would go out even further out. as history has shown any place human sets feet into, the wild life dies. nature gets polluted.

So the winner by not being shit must be the bora.

plus the prius is expensive to buy and it has many toxic materials in its batteries etc, so harms the environment in the long run.
a 30% of an average cars carbon footprint is in manufacture, so keeping an old car is better for environment even if it polutes anywhere up to 30% more when running(2x as old).
It is capitalism that is really to blame for everything.

@hunghuge12 hahahahahahahah cool story bro, what chapter do you shut up? If you think I am referring to the language itself, you are truly a clueless man. I was stating the fact that you don't need to use the word "shit" in every sentence.
JAPANTUNER100 7 months ago
@JAPANTUNER100 It's also a fact that you don't need to post pointless comments when you really have nothing to say. I'm still waiting for you to point out what part of my post was invalid and why. I guess it will be a long wait.
hunghuge12 7 months ago
@hunghuge12 Fine you wanna know why? Simply because you didnt point out any bad points of the Jetta which leads to you being a biased person
JAPANTUNER100 7 months ago
@JAPANTUNER100 You see we're back to that English thing again. Not looking at the Bora's faults doesn't make anything else I typed any less valid. I didn't say it was ideal or perfect - just that it has to be the winner by default.
Infact you calling my comments invalid is invalid because of this. If you can't understand that go ask someone - maybe your teacher - what I mean and I'm sure they will explain it nice and slowly for you.
hunghuge12 7 months ago
@hunghuge12 how would it be a "valid" comparison you typed if you don't even display the faults of the Jetta, you can't just automatically say it's the winner by default when you don't carefully view it's faults.
JAPANTUNER100 7 months ago
@JAPANTUNER100 Like I said - that doesn't invalidate anything I typed. From the dictionary;
Invalidate - to render weak or ineffective, as an argument.
ignoring any downsides the bora may have would only invalidate what I put if it rendered it weak or ineffective. It doesn't and wouldn't so my points are valid and you need to go back to school.
hunghuge12 7 months ago
@hunghuge12 maybe instead of telling me to go back to school, haven't you thought that its a possibility that your comparison is now "invalid" because of the lack of evidence or proof provided
JAPANTUNER100 7 months ago

hunghuge12 7 months ago
@hunghuge12 Oh my god you really are a clueless idiot. >.> what I am saying is that due to the lack of evidence or proof provided that the Jetta has no major faults, your argument/comparison is weakened and ineffective (Invalid) If you were to fairly compare, you should've displayed faults of all the cars then pick a winner

Neonspinnazz30 1 year ago
@GarrettKeetley Perhaps you could look the specs up instead of arguing with me because you are sadly mistaken. The SRT Challenger has a 6.1 litre engine! The huge size means it makes gobs of torque! Much more torque than a turbo 1.9 litre!
surethang27 1 year ago
@surethang27 This is almost an unfair argument. the 6.1 liter engine only makes 190 more ft./lbs, than the 1.9 turbo diesel. Compare the Challengers engine to say a Cummins or Duramax for a fair challenge, and, well, the diesels kick your Challengers ass all day long.

Piro42 1 year ago
@Piro42 The Edmond testing is flawed. They tested the cars in several environments for short times, because of which, none of the cars adapted well to new situations.
For example, the majority off smart owners get 45-55 MPG (actually recorded btw), and that's real world driving and not some stupid road trip.

The Toyota is the best choice and although the diesel are there, the noise is horrible, more expensive if they get problems and petrol engines are sometimes even more reliable than diesel. In addition, the 'example' of the best choice is 'the rest of car makers' are now trying to develop hybrid engines.
SupportForToyota 1 year ago
also the diesel is an easy 300,000+ mile car because of the diesel's known reliability, so if the goverement recalled the ridiculus tax on diesel fuel it would become cheaper than gasoline again and we would have a clear and undeniable winner

why in god's name does the smart need premium?? it's 70 horse from a 1 liter engine. that's like 140 horse from a 2 liter. you shouldn't need premium for that. it's a bunch of bullshit.

@creamyfilling102 It doesn't need premium. smart only recommends premium to extend the life and performance of the engine way into high mileage, and to protect from engine knock. Many of smart owners run 87 with no problem.

If you buy a prius you will damage the enviroment even more. Why? Becouse it take a huge amount of energy and resources to produce this car! Espacially the batteries! They aren´t recycleable, you need to change them every 3 years, you need to ship them and to produce them you need toxic chemicals.

@tnralliart2600 Fun to drive doesn't mean crap if it's always breaking down, which VWs are infamous for. Also, factor in the cost to buy a Jetta TDI, and it becomes evident it's a losing situation if you're after saving money.

@bliglum Actually, the mini has worse safety ratings, FACT...
Really, this road test is a joke. You cannot say who wins best mpg for a road trip!
The average smart owner gets 45-55mpg...

World's most "fuel" efficient cars? The Twike or Velomobile.
