Most bands do or have done playback at some point (including muse, nirvana and just about any other band you can think of). Some TV shows just don't seem to allow live performance for whatever reason. It's a promo thing and in some cases bands are contractually obliged to make these appearances. It's got nothing to do with being able or unable to play live.
