Trying something different doesn't bother me at all. Going from intelligent to silly....that's what bothers me. Going from trend setters to trend followers...that's what bothers me. Going from well crafted art to thrown together dreck....that's what bothers me. Being *truly* different would have been nice...maybe they should have looked into that.
Yeah , lets hope bands keep recording the same lame 80-90's sound because God forbid they ever want to record something different so they can satisfy your "shut-in" , live at home with Mommy and watch wrastlin' lifestyle. Personally....I think its a great album, but I guess I grew up and I like bands that take a chance change their sound and still keep it fresh.

I saw Queensryche in concert a couple years ago. They were great. They obviously didn't play any new stuff at that concert. They pulled a Metallica. This is a sad day for music.

@Petruccibear It's about the duality of the new technology, (time waster/great revolutionnary possibilities) and better than Virtuality, on the album Test for Echo, for instance, and the music is as dense as what you get on Vapor Trails. there's a few songs that are well done but should be on other people albums on DTC (Got it Bad -> fun Steve Vai-ish joke, Around the World -> U2, Wot We Do -> any RnB) but beside that its not inept).
The LYRICAL ineptitude is what frustrates me, not to mention the wonderful attitude Geoff Tat has adopted recently. I can make no comparison between this album and modern Rush (Caravan/BU2B)
@PB I can see where you're coming from, sometimes its clear DeGarmo would have improved them. best lyrics are At the edge (about an aging generation giving up its hope for a change), The Lie / Big Noize (obvious), and well I find Broken touching but that's a very personnal matter at this point.
it's just that there's so much bad comments on it while this album is still good, and I think even better than the last 3 DT albums from the point of view of emotions and lyrics...
I think the problem with this album is that the bad tracks bring it way down. I'd definitely agree that some cuts from Black Clouds and Systematic Chaos are in the same league lyrically (Think Best of Times and Nightmare to Remember) but overall the emotion is still there (MOST of the time, some of them are pretty damn cerebral)
@Petruccibear my problem with DT is twofold : lyrics are often nothing special, just facts stated in a very basic way. QR might have the opposite problem at times, too much attempt at subtexts and metaphor. The other DT problem is too much musical quotes from the bands they are fans of. And Also, Ruddess funny sounds were fresh (for metal)10 years ago, but it's getting old joke. I'm more into a thick Hammond sound à la Jon Lord/Sherinian for Keyboards.

It was evident then that Geoff's wife was running the show (she was back at the soundboard bossing people around with headphones). The show was lifeless, and WTF was up with the saxophone Geoff brought out? Anyways, it's sad to see that they haven't changed much from then. How disappointing.

Just heard that this album is tanking in sales. They will probably lose their label...but that's ok. Geoff has his own label - a wine label. @EGX500 LOL. I grew up listening to Queensryche. Loved them. Went and saw them for the first time a few years ago in Fayetteville, AR. Terrible show. It was evident then that Geoff's wife was running the show (she was back at the soundboard bossing people around with headphones). The show was lifeless, and WTF was up with the saxophone Geoff brought out? Anyways, it's sad to see that they haven't changed much from then. How disappointing.
